GORDON Brown yesterday warned that "time is short" for the international community to agree tough sanctions on Zimbabwe and avert a humanitarian crisis.
The Prime Minister hopes a commitment he secured from the G8 summit in Japan will translate into United Nations sanctions against the country's discredited president, Robert Mugabe, and 13 of his henchmen.

Two days of negotiations are under way at
the UN security council in New York but it is feared that Russia or China could use their veto to block financial and travel sanctions and a ban on selling weapons and military equipment to the African nation.

Mr Brown told MPs yesterday that he hoped sanctions – and sending a UN envoy to Zimbabwe – would lead to Mugabe being deposed or forced to stand down. It was "important the whole weight of the international community" supported efforts to force him out.

"I believe time is short for that, so it is important that the UN pass its resolution as soon as possible, and I hope that all countries and all continents will get behind it," he said. "This is an emergency in terms of humanitarian aid."

David Cameron, the Tory leader, praised Mr Brown for putting Zimbabwe at the top of the agenda. "The key is to translate those words at the G8 into an effective UN resolution," he said.

When one is the leader of a country one must be able to look as though one is expressing deep concern about the lives of people in Zimbabwe in order to be perceived as caring...

Obviously we know he only cares for himself and is trying desperately to look ministerial and stately and like a leader.

Ministerial....well he is a son of the manse
Stately........he is in some state right enough
Leader.........well so was Hitler, Stalin, Saddam & Dubya

Have you noticed the pattern here?
Almost all the nations of the world want tough action taken agains Zimbabwe, except for three countries.
China
Russia
South Africa

China = Shocking Human Rights records and a history of communist rule at the hands of tyrants.
Russia = Shocking Human Rights record and a history of communist rule at the hands of many tyrants
South Africa = THE ANC's roots are stained in communism, after all during apartheid it was the Russians who trained and supplied arms for the military wing of the ANC in their cold war fight with the west.

Interesting how nations who have always been subjected to communist rule and human rights attrocities are the first to protect murderous dictators.

one gets tired hearing about zimbabwe, or in fact africa in general, leave them to stew in their own juice, sell them plenty of arms and look after the people in the uk who are living in poverty.

Let's face it Gordon this is now old news and you can move on now. How about criticising China for its human rights abuses or some other (take your pick) unelected dictatorship. But they're not so easy to push around and take your failings out of the spotlight.

Why not get a life and reduce fuel tax, impose severe penalties on fuel and food speculators, drop these VED changes and make yourself a Local Hero for a change. Right now your "International Statesman" bit is wearing thin. At least Tony could pretend, but then it was all veneer, You don't even have that. Notice too how wonderful Tony is doing as a "Middle East envoy" - fabulous successes there eh?

What's the point of imposing sanctions on a country who's leadership is so corrupt that the people have nothing anyway?
Britain should do the right thing and remove these animals from power. No oil involved but because its the right thing to do.
I am not racist but non of these people do not have the mindset to govern a country.

11.

I'm sure your heart's in the right place but it's Brown's intentions to look great in public and the smarm and nonsense he comes away with the to convince us that he will do anything right to sort out the Zimbabwe problem. Nothing less than an invasion would accomplish that - are you ready for that?

Also anyone with half a brain could tell that if he failed to handle the current quarrels with Russia that they would be a bit reluctant to support a UN initiative! Very naive or calculated - just like his Jeddah trip. It's all for show.
