LOTHIANS Labour MSP George Foulkes has hit out at the SNP over its plans to cut back on Asbos.
And he said if the Scottish Government wanted to concentrate more on prevention of antisocial behaviour it would have to come up with hard cash to do so.

He said: "It seems daft to abandon something which has shown it can work in certain circumstances with nothing to put in its place. There is a lot of concern about antisocial behaviour – in the whole range of crime, it's probably what causes most disturbance among ordinary people."

Community Safety Minister Fergus Ewing announced earlier this week the Government was switching its emphasis to prevention and early intervention.

Mr Foulkes said: "Of course we're all in favour of prevention, but when I have asked questions about how much money they are going to put into it, I've not had a straight answer."

Empty Vessels make the most noise !

More incoherent noise from the Labour party. How about some real initiative, policy and semblance of sanity.

It would be refreshing if labour would support the Scottish governments attempts to re-implement the policies which reflect what was at the heart of the Labour parties founders agenda, Free health care and education! Instead of supporting massive cuts in public spending!

Well I suppose that what happens when failed teachers take over a party and self interest outweighs a community conscience!

What will save today's youth is prevention and perhaps if Westminster would release the funds to which we are due or free up the Lottery money which is being "Redirected" to the Olympics then more money would be available to help with prevention.

As I said Empty vessels... soon to be howling in a wilderness of their own making!

Foulkes is an idiot. ASBO's look good on paper but are hugely impractical to actuallly work with. And the cost in man hours to try and get them is astronomical. We already have legislation to deal with anti-social behaviour, the task is to get the right people in the right places at the right time to implement it. More and more work is being carried out with out of hours teams from local authorities and front line community policing, together with concentration on specific targetted areas. That is getting more results than all your ASBO's put together, although there is still a long way to go. But with limited resources you have to make the best of what you've got, and ASBO's don't do that.

Hm, I'm unclear on what the proposal actually said. Did they say they were just planning to cut back on these metaphorical slaps on the wrist, or did they have plans to increase actual slaps on the wrist?

I see Foulkes has come off the bottle long enough to make another embarassing attempt at 'politic'!

Labour under Jack McConnell let the culture of youth crime flourish and the spread of the useless ASBO as the manure that saw it grow.

Perhaps Foulkes should just go back to his drinmks cabinet and be woken up when its time to wheel him into Holyrood!

Is it not kinda hypocritical considering he has been charged with being drunk and disordely when he was a MP in Westminster a good few years back?

But then again he is a lying Labour stooge

its about time the SNP were given some ASBOs,they seemed to be behaving in an outrageous way at the moment, regarding the booze and light sentences for criminals, plus other things,if they keep up this crazy ways of doing things they can forget the independence vote, they would lose it,
leave the booze prices alone, and increase the sentences for people who do not behave!!!!!
