BARCELONA authorities might fine U2 for rocking too long and loudly during rehearsals for their latest world tour, the city council said yesterday.
However, the city said it is proud to host the beginning of the Irish band's world tour.

It said that one of its districts had received a formal complaint from residents about the band playing after permitted hours and making too much noise. The council said that it had given the band permission to rehearse until 10pm, limiting the amount of sound they could make.

However, local media said the band had rehearsed until midnight at sound levels measured at 70 decibels – the equivalent noise of a vacuum cleaner at one meter.

There was me thinking it was an American spy plane spinning over Spain. Francis Gary Powers, where are you?

Come on, it's only rock and roll.

I'm fairly certain that ACDC would be a lot louder.

ACDC would be like TNT or dynamite.

"it's only rock and roll"

Far from it. It's U2. They've been rehearsing about 30 years and still sound like "ding ding ding ding ding ding ding".

Concurred. U2 to me is just a load of fast strumming backed by the same old stupid 80s drum-beat. I certainly wouldn't dignify them by calling it rock 'n' roll!

#7 - pretending to be a music critic now?

Go on then, tell us some bands that you DO consider to be 'rock 'n' roll'. Should be a laugh.

#9 - so rock and roll pretty much finished in the 70s for you, then? I thought as much.

Asian,

Those were the first groups that came into my head under each genre. I also like some of the more recently popular artists such as Seasick Steve, Oasis, Kula Shaker and Razor Light. As well as some of the others who are still popular and have been for some time, such as Elton John, Queen, Phil Collins and Pink Floyd.

Strictly speaking Rock 'n' Roll finished in the early 1960s. A lot of modern rock oriented music is generically known as "rock 'n' roll" even though it is not strictly of that genre.

Regarding the music of the 1980s, including so-called "rock" bands like U2 and INXS, the vast majority all shared exactly the same brain-dead "boom-chick" drum beat with an over-loud snare on the 2nd and 4th beats of the bar. Try listening to some at some point and you will see what I mean.

Being used to drummers who actually played their kits properly, I found this daft beat more and more unbearable as time went on. Don't get me wrong, there were some brilliant songs in the 80s but unfortunately, most of them were ruined by bad, unimaginative production resulting in a too thin a sound coupled with the aforementioned nursery school "drumming"---sometimes on electronic "drum kits".

About the only ones to break the mould were Michael Jackson and Queen. Don't even get me started on the manufactured Stock, Aitken & Waterman rubbish!

You defeated the uninformed schoolboy #8/10 comprehensively (not difficult, mind). Your list is pretty well exact.

#13 - thanks for that, pal!

Dunno how you worked out that I was 'defeated' - was just busy at work, and couldn't be ar.sed telling Fuelheid why I thought his list of bands sucked.

And I'm no schoolboy, either - have been going to gigs for 25 years, thanks very much. Only three of them involving bands listed at #9, thankfully.

I won't answer that question, but somebody else might!

But ... I'm sure #9 would agree with such omissions from his early list as Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Carl Perkins, Bo Diddley, Gene Vincent, The Platters ... the list just goes on and on.

Give #9 Fuelheid a chance - he gave you a fine selection box up there.

Come on, everyone needs some satisfaction.
