BRITISH expats and tourists in Dubai were yesterday issued with a stark warning from the UK government that terrorists may be plotting attacks on the booming Middle East business hub.
More than 100,000 Britons live in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), mostly in Dubai. In addition, at least one million British tourists visit the area annually.

Specialist intelligence is believed to have forced the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
(FCO) to upgrade the threat of an attack to "high" in the previously peaceful state.

The UAE had up to now been perceived as being largely immune to terrorist activity and experts last night said that its security was unlikely to be able to withstand attempts to breach it.

Although the FCO – which has upped the warning level from "general" for the whole of the UAE – has refused to release any details of the threat, sources said it was very likely to originate from al-Qaeda.

Travel advice posted by the Foreign Office on its website states: "There is a high threat of terrorism. We believe terrorists may be planning to carry out attacks in the UAE. Attacks could be indiscriminate and could happen at any time, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers, such as residential compounds, military, oil, transport and aviation interests."

Britons living in the Emirates were advised to "maintain a high level of security awareness, particularly in public places" but the FCO has not advised Britons not to travel out.

Stuart Crawford, an Edinburgh-based defence analyst, said: "Terrorism is now global so whilst traditionally places like Dubai and Scotland were perhaps deemed to be safe, nowhere is safe now.

"The United Arab Emirates are also in an area of the world where those who would carry out such attacks for ideological reasons don't have to travel too far.

"There is a huge overseas presence there – it's associated with wealth and capitalism and the West and I think it can offer numerous targets."

No other western embassies in the UAE have heightened their warnings – which Mr Crawford said suggested there was specific intelligence of a threat to Britons.

A senior Arab analyst in the Gulf said the FCO advice could have serious ramifications for investment confidence and employment in the region.

UK nationals represent the biggest western community in the UAE and Scots make up a large proportion of them.

#1 Polly Ann. Yes indeed. The whole state of Israel is a terrorist state. They even have them in America, but there they call them the Bush Administration.

Sorry, but I could never see the attraction of actually going on holiday to an Arab country. What an eye opener though.....westerners being terrorist targets in an Arab state !! Well what a shock that revelation is.

Stuart Crawford, a security analyst propounds terrorism is global...I suppose he has no axe to grind in all this. Like all the "experts" he states the obvious, but fuels the situation with these comments to keep his company in business. It did not take AlQuada to begin terrorism, it's been around for a long time, but perhaps these "experts" have not been around long enough to remember it.

Actually Guga is spot on again. Might I add that there is not a comment he has made on this or any other forum that I have disagreed with.
Bush is indeed a terrorist, and a far bigger one than Bin Laden.

You may add what you please, Capt. However Guga is a retard. Why don't you find out where in North America s/he resides (or is interned) and keep s/him occupied for the benefit of the rest of us.

On the story: sadly only a matter of time before this expat population was targeted.

I haven't read about Israeli who became a suicide bomber. I haven't read about Israelis teaching their children to hate via schoolbooks, cartoons, and tv shows with large puppets being killed by Jews!!
Contrary to what the anti-Israeli brigade thinks, the Jews teach peace to their children.
In good faith they have returned land for peace..but we all know THAT never happened. And we will see, just how long this truce, brokered by Egypt is in play before it is broken, yet again.
I am going to put a link on here..I know the anti-Israel, anti-Jew brigade will condemn it, or make fun of it..but this is what goes on in Israel..HOPE.
We have all scene the mouse who looks like Mickey Mouse being pretend killed by a Palestinian pretending to be a Jew..but these Jewish children want peace. Look at THEIR faces..there is no anger...just the look of HOPE.

Is Stuart Crawford sat in a air-conditioned office in Edinburgh,I would suggest he gets off his backside and visits the UAE, the only harassment that I rcv here is off the USA Navy when going fishing.Having lived here for 13 years I consider it a damn sight safer than the UK,especially for my teenage daughters.

I once thought of Israel as the oppressor then I read the Qur'an and the Surrah and spend alot of time reading Islamic information.

Jews have been in the front line and receiving end of religious violence for such a long time they should get an award for patience.

If I had to endure the constant threats they have I would have nuked half the middle east.

They are probably the most success people on the planet bar none.

The sooner all these liberal do gooders realise that the Islamists are manipulating their kindness the better, however I fear it will take a serious amount of blood shed before everyone realises what is going on. then we will be supporting Israel like all decent civilised people should.

#17..I was hoping in MY lifetime we would see peace. This new truce, makes no promises, especially when Hamas said they will take this time to regroup and rearm.
We all heard about the house that exploded, with an Hamas VIP and 6 members of his family. We heard Hamas say Israel did it. They have just come out and said Israel didn't do it. Has any body heard that? I doubt it. The house was used for bomb making..and someone in that house made a mistake..but the first people they blame is Israel..knowing all along it couldn't be them.
There is so much hate on their side that it will be generations, if ever, that this damage to the minds of these children grown into adults ever goes away.

#6-Granitecity-I've read articles and seen photos of dubai. It looks like a beautiful, modern place. And westerners are targetted everywhere, so are muslims if other muslims dont like their views or beliefs or color. shia vs. sunni, arab muslims killing black muslims.

UAE terror threat.
Sir. Let us get this clear.
"There is a huge overseas presence there – it's associated with wealth and capitalism and the West and I think it can offer numerous targets."
The seven states, termed emirates, are Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm al-Quwain..
UAE has seven states. Dubai is the fastest growing since 1970s.LPG no oil. Heavy trade zone and many expatriates from the Far East, like India, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Bangladesh, Pakistan, at the lower ladder of the labour who build the rods and earn that much not as high as the other expatriates earn. I mean the British, American, and others from the West. There is very clear defined line with these. The plenty haves and plenty diggers. We have Abu Dhabi that is now coming up and has oil off shores. Sharjah is small and has the many expatriates living in Sharjah, as the rents are lower here then Dubai. Sharjah is about 14 kilometres from Dubai.
Ajman and other are still in infancy and growing or word this as trying to compete in rents and factories with Dubai. The life is not easy as it was exactly like the world. It does become difficult to live with one salary. I talk of the ones who come from Far East and who dig the roads. Most of them do not have families, as they prefer to keep them in the hometown and remit the money to them.
Now if there is threat these are the ones , the mason who are on the 45th floor in the heat of 40.c. , fishmongers, butchers, road builders, and the gold dealers most from India and Italy get the bullets or missile that is if the story is correct. Then we go a step further. There are few expatriates in the other states as Dubai is takes the big chunk of trade. Agreed there are accidents and one happened on the metro. The bridge collapsed as the cement or the mixture was not proper. This is still under construction. NOT DONE. NOT TRAIN ON THE TRACK.
When you read the detailed story, as is, the panic to fly the differe

UAE is about to become classified as an emerging market. This will mean a huge influx of investment. USA are fine with that cause they are good pals. China are good pals too. the UK however has a lot to lose. Less investment in the UK and more people leaving to go to the UAE....

that is a problem for the UK....

Seriously... its a bit of a joke. Nobody is worried. UAE is fantastic, you feel safe, and nobody bothers you. Nobody will steal your car or smash it (unless in an accident) nobody spraypaints, etc. etc. You can do more in UAE than in the UK (ski, snowski, cinema, sports etc.)

Its also more democratic than the UK. I feel more free here than in the UK bar some certain rules.
