South Africa calls in army as street violence spreads

THABO Mbeki, the president of South Africa, last night approved the deployment of the army to quell violence against foreigners.
The move came in the wake of xenophobic attacks that have left 42 people dead and driven an estimated 30,000 people from their homes.

It is the first time troops have been ordered on to the streets to quell unrest since the end of apartheid.

Govindsamy Mariemuthoo, a police spokesman, said 400 arrests had been made following ten days of unrest, most of it in squatter camps that are home to impoverished South Africans and immigrants from neighbouring countries.

Mr Mbeki approved a request from the police for the involvement of the South African national defence force to stop attacks on foreigners in and around Johannesburg, a statement from his office said.

The announcement came after reports yesterday of violence spreading to Durban and the eastern province of Mpumalanga.

In Durban, a mob armed with sticks and bottles descended on a tavern where Nigerians were understood to be drinking. No-one was injured, but the attack prompted about 700 migrants to seek refuge in a church.

Phindile Radebe, a police spokeswoman, said: "A mob of about 200 were gathering on the streets carrying bottles and knobkerries (wooden clubs], attacking people. They attacked a tavern believed to be owned by Nigerians."

In Johannesburg, Mr Mariemuthoo said the situation had calmed but there were reports of scattered violence.

The victims included a Malawian, who said he was beaten up when he tried to return to his shack in a squatter settlement to gather his belongings.

The attacks began last week in the township of Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, before spreading to the city centre and across the Gauteng region. Mobs have been seeking out foreigners, many of who have sought refuge in police stations, churches and community halls.

Aid groups in the Johannesburg area said most of the violence had been targeted against Zimbabweans, Malawians, Mozambicans and other foreigners living alongside South Africans in squatter camps. There are believed to be between three and five million foreigners in South Africa, most of them Zimbabweans fleeing poverty and violence at home. They are blamed for taking jobs from locals and driving up crime rates.

'Necklace' horror returns to troubled townships

IN THE scenes of violence that have rocked South Africa over the past week, most horrifying of all has been reports of the return of "necklacing".

The savage practice is execution by forcing a rubber tyre, filled with petrol, around a victim's chest and arms, and setting it on fire.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, pictured, who once intervened to prevent a mob from necklacing a man, is among the high-profile leaders who have begged for the recent ethnic violence to stop.

During the worst days of apartheid, criminals and suspected collaborators of regime were often sentenced to this appalling death by "people's courts".

The practice became a common method of lynching during disturbances in South Africa in the 1980s and 1990s.

Nearly 20 years later, it is refugees on the run from the rule of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe, or Mozambicans fleeing from violence and poverty, who are being burned alive in and around Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town.

Goodness knows what will happen if foreigners come in and steal the world cup from South Africa.

After all, we are ENTITLED to win the cup because..... because...... because..... oh yes, because we had to suffer thirty years ago.

42 Dead and 30,000 displaced and Thabo Mbeki orders out the Army.

Meanwhile over the last few years Mugabe has killed thousands and 3 Million have been forced to seek refuge in South Africa, but do we here a single word of critisism from Mbeki? Not a chance.

any man who can stand and watch the carnage caused by Mugabe and say "Quiet Diplomacy" I think that's a measure of his ability as a leader,do nothing is unfortunately is the foreign policy of Mbeki and the rest of those clowns in the S.A.D.C. protecting their terrorist brother is more important!
Africans have yet to produce a "Leader" of any quality, South Africa is the most advanced country, the giant of Africa lead by a mouse.

the greatest betrayer of Africa and African are the Africans themselves.

Sorry! Mr President but the facts speak for themselves.

This is not Mbeki business. You expect he must go to war against his neibor?

Black on black violence is taking place at the moment! We dont see it, it is restricted to the townships. The images you see are the same ones we see, but we dont hear the sirens, the screams or see the pain! Zulu's are attacking Shangaans, it is no longer about nationality!
What is now becomming clear to the world is that this new black government cannot control the masses, how then was the old apartheid government expected to do so?
South African's are a resolute people and they will overcome this period of shame, but the victims may never recover, indeed 42 of them are already dead.

MBEKI has still not made a public announcement, then again, he said Zimbabwe was not a crisis so this is hardly worth him commenting on is it?

This situation is taking a sinister turn now.The oxymoronic South African National Intelligency Agency has now come out and blamed right wing supporters of apartheid and colonialism for funding and fomenting the violence. This is a signal to the illiterate drones who support the ANC to attack Whites and I fully expect the Scotsman will be reporting on such attacks in the days and weeks to come. This is a regime who have actively encouraged genocide against White farmers and Whites in general who experience 5 times the amount of violent crime in comparison to Africans. The Western Media have stood side by side with the ANC in covering up the genocide against Whites and Black apartheid and soon they will have plenty to fill their front pages.

who said anything about war? its a simple matter close the border! you cant hurt the Zimbabwean people any more than they suffer now, as for Mbeki his people think it is his business otherwise why the violence? I think the chickens have come home to roost for Mbeki this time they wont be able to blame the white man or apartheid (they have had plenty mileage out of the argument.)
You may have noticed the only thing that brings black African leaders together in agreement with each other is when they have a problem with a white Government in Africa, now that there are none left, they have gone back to their petty sqaubling while thousands die, it may be of interest to you more Africans have died in the last fifty years at the hand of Africans, than the previous 150 years of colonial rule. African rulers out shine any white man`s rule in Africa.

You continually post "it is none of their business" when others suffer "inside" their own country.

Question for you - If you saw a group of individuals enter your neighbor's home and proceed to beat the crap out of him, would you feel compelled to help him? Your answer should give you some answers.

The old apartheid governments had hundreds of years to do provide a decent life for its black citizens. You can hardly expect the Mbeki government, its ineptitude notwithstanding, to do so in the short time it has been in power. As for the black on black violence, there was a little episode there called the Boer war; and the tendency of Boer men to shoot their spouses over the slightest transgression.

your some what off with your history. Apartheid only came around in 1948, between 1801 to 1961 Britain ruled in South Africa and they couldn't`t educate all the Africans and didn`t have the resources that Mbeki has. Both Zimbabwe (82 years) and South Africa(80 years)of white rule and brought two backward African countries into the first world, no mean achivement! Africans needs more time for what? some African countries gained the freedom years and years ago and are worse now than ever, African are now equal how much time should be given to them another two or three hundred years? at the rate their going they will be an extinct species.
Like the old apartheid argument the more time argument
is obsolete.

You are somewhat off with your math. Even assuming that in 1801 the British were the first whites to rule South Africa, (assuming the British are whites, and the Dutch before them are not or perhaps had not honed their ruling skills yet); it would be 193 years before majority rule would take over. So, Britain, which was the reigning superpower of the time, could not educate all the Aficans; but Thabo Mbeki is supposed to do that in few years? What resources do they have now that Britain didn't have?

As for white rule bringing the backward African nations into the first world; one dares ask, "First World for whom?" Maybe for whites. Most Africans still live in squalor in little shacks with no running water. I bet you can find all of that in any Third World country, African or otherwise. Besides, it is not like those white governments were running apprenticeship programs for future African leaders. Apartheid might have officially started in 1948, but its de facto status had commenced long before then.

Close border for what? Never say "things cannot got worse" they can ALWAYS got worse. If army no get food it take foods from people. So what must Mbeki do? He will no suffer to see black leader criticised to outside world. What he say behind close door different maybe. No point to criticise make hostile. Like Myanmar now, west want to help, government say no.

"They wont be able to blame the white man or apartheid."
Still long time blame apartheid. Apartheid make one big big mess take long time make right. All Africa still have problem because of Apartheid. Country border by whiteman, not by nation, Nile treaty sign white man to Egypt even.

"You may have noticed the only thing that brings black African leaders together in agreement with each other is when they have a problem with a white Government in Africa,"

Yes, so whiteman be quiet now.

"now that there are none left, they have gone back to their petty sqaubling while thousands die, it may be of interest to you more Africans have died in the last fifty years at the hand of Africans, than the previous 150 years of colonial rule. African rulers out shine any white man`s rule in Africa."

It is not your business. It is Africa business. If you want help African put business, put money, shut mouth. If you no want help Africa, go away, shut mouth.
Whiteman fail in Africa.
