A MOTORCADE carrying Mikheil Saakashvili, the president of Georgia, and Lech Kaczynski, president of Poland, turned back after Russian troops fired shots into the air 30 yards from a checkpoint in the breakaway territory of South Ossetia yesterday.
Nobody was hurt.

This incident seems to be intended to keep the pressure on the Georgian government by an outrageously provocative act. Provocation was a Soviet-era technique used both against non-Soviet states externally and against individuals internally in trials of strength. Externally Soviet aggression would test how far it could go, which was generally very far given the often spineless response of the West. Those who minimise this type of incident have no understanding of or sympathy for the recent history of former Soviet satellite states struggling to free themselves from the Communist legacy of physical and psychological damage. It may well be that the South Ossetians are being used as agents provocateurs in order to provoke another violent Georgian response which could lead to a full Russian invasion and regime change.
