Rock legends want to silence Guantanamo's torture tunes

IT IS mainly a collection of grinding power chords and caterwauling originally intended to produce feelings of euphoria and release.
But the list of some of popular music's biggest acts is a grim roll call of Guantanamo's Greatest Hits – the tunes used to prepare inmates for interrogation.

Bands and artists whose recordings have been used in controversial interrogation techniques by US forces yesterday backed a new campaign to end the practice.

The playlist of songs, designed to traumatise and destabilise prisoners psychologically, includes rock acts such as AC/DC, Aerosmith and Metallica.

Pop acts – and even children's music – have also been employed for contentious methods of interrogation.

Christopher Cerf, who wrote music for Sesame Street, said he was horrified to learn songs from the show were used.

The Stop The Music Torture drive is the brainchild of Reprieve, the human rights charity that provides legal representations for inmates at Guantanamo Bay.

The campaign aims to exert pressure from the international community to bring to an end the techniques used by US forces in Guantanamo, Iraq and Afghanistan.

It will also feature minutes of silence during concerts and festivals. Reprieve will also lobby musicians whose music is known to have been used in such situations, while the Musicians' Union is taking steps to mobilise support.

The singer-songwriter David Gray, whose track, Babylon, was used without his knowledge, said yesterday: "What we're talking about here is people in a darkened room, physically inhibited by handcuffs, bags over their heads and music blaring.

"That's torture. It doesn't matter what the music is – it could be Tchaikovsky's finest, or it could be Barney the Dinosaur. It really doesn't matter, it's going to drive you completely nuts."

The music tactic has been common in the US "war on terror" since September 2003, with forces systematically using loud music on hundreds of detainees.

Binyam Mohammed, a prisoner at Guantanamo, said men held with him at the CIA's "Dark Prison" in Afghanistan wound up smashing their heads against walls, unable to endure more.

"There was loud music, (Eminem's] Slim Shady and Dr Dre for 20 days. I heard this non-stop over and over," he told his lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith. "The CIA worked on people, including me, day and night for the months before I left. Plenty lost their minds."

Mr Stafford-Smith, Reprieve's director, added: "The Bush administration likes to paint this as harmless, like a prisoner being given an iPod.

"But Binyam Mohammed put it best when I spoke with him in Guantanamo: 'Imagine you are given a choice,' he said. 'To lose your sight or lose your mind. While having your eyes gouged out would be horrendous, there is little doubt which you would choose'."

Rear Admiral David Thomas, the commander of Guantanamo's detention centre, said the treatment was not currently used, but he would not rule out its reintroduction.

TOP TEN

The songs most frequently played to interrogate Guantanamo prisoners:

1. Enter Sandman – Metallica
2. Bodies – Drowning Pool
3. Shoot to Thrill – AC/DC
4. Hell's Bells – AC/DC
5. I Love You, from the Barney And Friends children's TV show
6. Born In The USA– Bruce Springsteen
7. We Are The Champions – Queen
8. Babylon – David Gray
9. White America – Eminem
10. Sesame Street – theme from the children's TV show

I'm disgusted to be an American citizen with this cowardly torturous behavior that happens at Gitmo. Let's give these prisoners a real trial to prove once and for all whether they are responsible for any of these crimes they are charged with. This despicable torture is abhorrent and is against my pledge of allegiance to the flag of America. Let the real trial begin.

Two ways to close them down! Do they have a license for playing music in public - and are they paying royalties?

All joking apart - cos this is not a joking matter - torture is unacceptable. This psychological terror should be stopped immediately. How can so-called civilised nations dare to raise their heads in moral outrage at injustices in the world, when they are themselves implicated in the same kind of thing.

Shame on them.

Why don't they force the detainees to listen to recordings of George W. Bush's speeches? The torture would be even worse.

Ditto that.

They killed thousands of people, the loved ones of those victims need closure. Let them decide whether the creeps live or die.

I think we should nix the death penalty, and keep them in their small cells in the middle of Fort Leavenworth looking through a small barred window, out into the world they will never enjoy.

I visited Alcatraz, the guide said the prisoners there had a real tough time because noise carries over water, and the prisoners could hear the echoes of parties and people laughing and enjoying life, knowing they would never do so again

Old Regina is back peddling torture. You little spoilt brat, what if your mom or dad was locked in there without a trial? That would be a different story of course.

So the Jihadist were sane before they got to Guantanamo Bay then, eh?

Funny how these rock legends don't have a problem with muslim governments out here in the Middle East using the following:

1) torture
2) death penalty
3) trial without jury

They have Allah's approval - allegedly!

This organisation Reprieve wouldn't be a Left wing organisation now would it that supports Palestinian terrorism?

Just guessing.

BTW
1) The guy in the photo, Angus Young, is Scottish but grew up in Oz.

2) Listening to AC\DC is NOT torture.

3) Listening to Gaelic music is torture. Let these terrorists listen to some whingeing highlander sob into the microphone going on and on about the highland clearances. A mental breakdown is guaranteed within the hour!

4) Listening to Runrig and The Proclaimers is torture.

5) Listening to Salmond prattle on about 'green' issues is torture.

6) Listening to Gordon Brown claiming to have 'saved' the world is torture.

AC/DC don't even come close.

It could be a lot worse!!

They could be torturing the detainees by playing them continuous "easy listening" music.
24 hours of the Carpenters would break anybody.

Torture is unacceptible, regardless of the form of torture it is, and it is also against international law, something that seems to be ignored time and again.
Give them an honest and fair trial and then deal with them according to the crimes they have committed, otherwise let them go, holding them without a trial is also criminal and shouldn't be tolerated. Let's hope that Obama has the balls to stand up for this kind of criminal behaviour and that he does something positive and that he does it as soon as he is the American president, these detainees have been waiting far too long and need to have their cases dealt with now.
The USA claims to be a Democratic country, well they can prove it by dealing with this mess ASAP.
20

we the people,

11/12/2008 04:43:44
guantanamo is a concentration camp.
the american government is a terrorist government.
those who work in guantanamo, or in the upper reaches of the american government deserve the rope.
carolyn what how on earth do you know 'they killed thousands of people'? if there was any credible evidence (i.e not extracted under torture) they would have stood trial. some of those kidnapped and dissappeared to guantanamo are as young as 14.
guantanamo is the embodiment of a deeply uncivilised country.

What a disgusting cowardly tactic. The US military, and all americans who support this torture, are as bad as the terrorists themselves.

Shame on you.I feel sorry for people like Casey.j who are seeing this barbaric behaviour carried out in their name.

Close this atrocity now !!!!!.

All the rockstars who's music has been used, should hold a "Close Guantanamo Now !" Festival. Beam it around the world and watch these animals squirm.

Cut out all the cr*p. If the US of A is convinced these guys are guilty of anything, then let them have the guts to put them on trial on the conventional way - not some trumped up military tribunal with its own rules - and let them abide by whatever verdict a jury arrives at.

Obama will shut the place down within three months of taking office.

Bemused and above it all,

11/12/2008 11:05:19
Just a wee aside, but if people are so disgusted to be american, detest torure etc, then why do they tolerate the existince of a naval base in Cuba on the spurious grounds of the sinking of the USS Maine in Havan in the 19th Century? At the time a stae of the art warship exploded & sank with NO LOSS OF LIFE?
Now theres one for conspiracy theorists.
Add to that the shameful intervention of the long riders in santiago de cuba as the cuban revoloutionaries were yards from overtaking the spanish forces & the Americans think its justifiable as they 'liberated' Cuba & were then thanked by the bombing.
Whole thing is a joke.

Scotsman Editor: I notice that my posts are being deleted. Each of the posts (one above and others in recent articles) were completely inline with the terms and conditions detailed. Again, it seems, that the paper has adopted the strategy of "if it's reported, delete it automatically". Surely you realise that thsi renders the threads pointless and at the mercy of the "Report Unsuitable" trolls that infest this site.

torture...

music is torture

silence is torture

imprisonment is torture

not quite sure what you are looking for here pal...

I'd be willing to set every one of them free if you were willing to accept personal responsability for their future actions...

these arent random cabbies nabbed off the streets of your nearest metroplex...

being GENEROUS, these are those who had frequent associations with some of the most abhorrent personalities on the planet... at WORST thes ARE the abhorrent personalities...

you dont LIKE the way we treat those who we find to be unacceptable...

be VERY careful about how you wield that stick, YOU have people in YOUR prisons who by the very same standards you wish to apply should be set free...

bottom line, you want those guys up there on those walls... you NEED those guys... they make your society "safe" for you to live in...

If you think Finnking is communist for wanting Guantanamo closed, you are about to have a communist president of the USofA. It'll soon be you who have to emigrate to find a state which shares your enthusiasm for torture - Uzbekistahn perhaps ?
If anyone hasn't yet heard Seize The Days "Club X-Ray" or David Rovics "Guantanamo Bay" then search them out, real artists have filled the void left by these 'rock legends'.
