ISRAELI divers yesterday found a suitcase containing remains police believe belong to a missing girl whose grandfather is being held on suspicion of killing her.

The discovery in Tel Aviv's Yarkon River marked a breakthrough in the case of four-year old Rose Pizem – missing since May. Her disappearance has transfixed Israel.

A post-mortem examination began yesterday afternoon, but was halted by a cour
t order after lawyers for the grandfather, Roni Ron, and the girl's mother, Marie Pizem, who is also a suspect, petitioned to have a pathologist of their choosing present at the inquest.

Police commissioner David Cohen said: "We found the girl's body, but it needs to undergo tests so we can be completely sure it is her."

Ron has said he struck Rose during a car journey, without intending to kill her.

On a trip to Israel, Pizem fell in love with Ron, her husband's father. Her husband divorced her after he suspected she was having an affair with his father.

Pizem brought Rose over from Paris claiming her ex-husband abused her.

• Greek police may have found an eight-year-old Italian girl, Denise Pipitone, reported missing in Sicily four years ago. She was spotted by a family friend on the Aegean island of Kos.
