Petraeus to take up strategic role

GENERAL David Petraeus, the United States' top commander in Iraq, is to lead the US Central Command, which is responsible for all its Middle East operations.
Gen Petraeus, credited with overseeing a dramatic reduction in violence in Iraq, was said by the US to be the officer best qualified to manage its counter-insurgency operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
