BARACK Obama has asked the US defence secretary, Robert Gates, to remain in office for the beginning of his presidential term. Sources said last night that Mr Gates will remain in the post for at least a year.
Mr Obama is expected to announce the selection of Mr Gates and other members of a national security brain trust next week.

Not good news on that front, that's the same Robert Gates that told Turkey that they couldn't stay in Iraq battling the rebel Kurds for more than six weeks whilst he is backing the American and British troop excursion for at least another two years and that's the same Robert Gates that gives the cross-border attacks in Pakistan his blessing as well. Look forward to another 9-11 type attack soon America.

The Democratic left won't be thrilled with this. I agree with keeping Robert Gates for at least a year.. but the loony left? They are not going to like this.

#4 Viva Dora?

There are reasons..Keeping Gates provides the continuity for the military. He is repected on both Capital Hill and within the military.
I guess I am not the only one who feels this way, and Gates still hasn't accepted yet...so we will see
and yes, this is my 1 ID.. unlike some others who post here..

Questionable sources have it that "Barack Hussein Obama" is really "Baruch (Barry) Hosanna Obediah," of Great Neck, Long Island, NY and Miami Beach, Florida.

Goyim beware !

#3 Lynne,

I agree with you. Gates is popular with the generals and some continuity in that area will be good.

You're also correct that the extreme left, the Move-On crowd, Kos disciples, etc, will be furious.

I've said for months that Obama isn't going to change much re Iraq. He's learned a lot since the election and since getting more detailed intelligence briefings. He may bring a few of our troops home, but he's going to tell us that conditions on the ground don't allow him to do what he'd like to do. And then all those devoted followers will start twisting themselves into pretzels again "explaining" why he didn't really lie. LOL!

Under the difficult circumstances we find ourselves in, the continuity provided by Mr. Gates would appear to be one of very few reasonable choices.

Perhaps Mr. Gates' experience, combined with wiser oversight from Mr. Obama, will result in a withdrawl
from Iraq and Afghanistan before these exploits completely bankrupt our nation.

It would be the first time the defense secretary of one administration was kept on by a new president from another party, in this case one who campaigned against his predecessor's war policy.
