ZIMBABWE'S inflation soared to a record high of 26,470.8 per cent as the economy contracted by 6 per cent, the central bank said yesterday – dealing a blow to president Robert Mugabe's government ahead of the general election next month.
The veteran leader will seek another five-year term on 29 March, against the backdrop of an economic meltdown widely blamed on his political and economic policies.

Gideon Gono, the governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, said that inflation gal
loped to 26,470.8 per cent year-on-year in November 2007, from 7,982.1 per cent in September. There were no figures for October.

The jump in inflation prompted the central bank to increase interest rates to 1,200 per cent from 975 per cent.

"The continued threat of high inflation warrants that interest rates be periodically realigned to discourage speculative borrowing and inflationary credit expansion," Mr Gono said.

"The economy is estimated to have declined by about 6 per cent in 2007. This contraction in economic activity has been mirrored in output decline in all sectors of the economy, with the exception of a marginal increase in agricultural output."

Zimbabweans have over the past eight years grappled with shortages of food, fuel, water and electricity in a crisis many say has its roots in Mr Mugabe's seizure of white-owned commercial farms.

They say the haphazard implementation of the programme has left what was once southern Africa's bread basket struggling to feed itself.

Mr Gono said the Reserve Bank had imported food worth £71 million in 2007, up from £57 million the previous year.

Mugabe. lol
The name is synonomous with failure and terror!
Its ironic that the old apartheid government was more considerate about the plight of the local people, than Mugabe has been. It is ironic that the old regime offered the people more honour, dignity and freedom!
Then again, perhaps its not ironic, perhaps its just black Africa all over again.

No doubt about it, Ian Smith was right! Mugabe can do the job!

I dont think so. Obama is not African, he is a black American. He has been brought up in a democratic society surrounded by western values and stability and he has embraced that culture. He is an intelligent man, more intelligent than most of us could ever claim to be. He is one of many gifted black people and he will do well, whether he wins or not is another matter. I am no so sure that America is ready to vote for a black man, after all , its a predominantly white country so its not difficult to understand.
You wouldnt see a white man winning an election in Japan or Nigeria, so its understandable if he does not get the votes. But that aside, I have no doubt in his ability.
Mugabe is an African used to the African way of corruption, cheating and turmoil.......he is a monster dictator who could not care less about anyone. Obama is not an African, he is American!

As you know Mr Mbeki is the main advocate of "Quiet diplomacy" but in simple English means "do nothing"
however he should be congratulated! he managed to con the Europeans into believing that he`s doing something.

This was forseen over 30 years ago in Zambia.

The punch-line of a joke in the 'Kapelwa Musonda' column in the Times Of Zambia was as follows (much reduced as it was a shaggy dog-type joke):

Rhodesian border guard to Zambian border guard, " Ha! Ha! you have no food in your country!"

Zambian border guard, " Yes, but we have our freedom and independence!"

Rodesian, "We will soon have our freedom!"

Zambian, " Yes. Then you will have no food either!"

Thanks to Fatty Soames and Harold Wilson people are starving in Zimbabwe. Nobody cares. The poor Zimbabwians are black and have no oil!

I hate Britain and its uncaring politics. We put them in this mess. Who cares? I do but I don't count.
We killed Sadam.

Don't get me started!

Rhodesia did not have 'apartheid', it had a qualified franchise. The taxpayers voted.

As for Obama, he is a 'coloured' or a goffle. He may be black enough for the USA but he would not be black in Africa.
The fact that he is where he is indicates a need to end all affirmative-action policies in the US. Jesse Jackson will be out of a job! And all 'blacks' can be judged on their merits just like poor old whitey.

#11, Shreddies: A summary from Meredith's "The Past is Another Country":

By 1900 16,000,000 acres of Southern Rhodesia's most fertile land had been taken by white farmers, i.e. 1/6 of the country's area. Displaced blacks were forced into native reserves (called "Tribal Trustlands" by the paternalistic British). These were in the dry, disease-ridden, hot, unproductive lowveld. In 1931 the Land Apportionment Act was promulgated. This legislation, (decades ahead of South Africa's notorious Group Areas Act), segregated the ownership and occupation of Southern Rhodesia's land; no black was allowed to own or occupy land in a designated white area, and vice versa. The most fertile 49,000,000 acres were assigned to just 50,000 whites, while the worst 29,000,000 acres were assigned to one million blacks. The remaining 18 million acres of the country were left unassigned at the time. The Act remained in force for 46 years.

The whites abused the fertile land. In Zimbabwe the land suitable for maize and wheat is effectively limited to the highveld. It is essential that such crops are grown where they can be in preference to livestock, and that adequate grain reserves are maintained from bumper seasons to provide food during droughts. White farmers soon established that they could make huge profits from raising cattle and tobacco on the highveld, and they also established dairy farms; the milk could not be consumed by blacks due to lactase deficiency. Displaced blacks in the lowveld starved. Cattle and sheep hooves cut into the soft rich red highveld soil, which is washed away in Zimbabwe's tropical downpours.

In the 1930's displaced impoverished blacks were subjected to taxation that forced them to leave the land and seek work as unskilled labourers on white farms, mines and businesses. (Regardless of this, conditions deteriorated with extreme rapidity in the overcrowded black reserves, forcing many to leave.) Pass laws were introduced, so that black adults could no

Meredith, continued:

Pass laws were introduced, so that black adults could not enter white areas without what was in effect a passport. Labour laws were passed that made it easy for black workers to be severely abused without recourse to justice. The Industrial Conciliation Act of 1934 prohibited blacks from becoming apprentices, and occupying skilled jobs.

Britain retained ultimate legislative authority until Nov 1962, i.e. it had the power to promulgate, block or reverse any Southern Rhodesian legislation. It held this power but never exercised it. Thus for 72 years Britain permitted racism in Southern Rhodesia without interference. Southern Rhodesian prime ministers made racist statements and supported blatantly racist policies, preceding similar policies in South Africa by many years. They received knighthoods from grateful British governments. Britain not only failed to discourage racism in Southern Rhodesia, it sanctioned it. (The hypocrisy of British politicians who had not raised a finger to condemn Southern Rhodesian policies, and who expressed outrage at apartheid, is very well understood in South Africa.) The white colonial government only opened the first school for blacks in 1944, and pitifully few were opened in the following years: Blacks were destined to be manual labourers, and little else.

It's impossible to understand how you equate Obama to Mugabe. It is also impossible to understand why a child born out of a white father/mother to black monther/father is regarded as black and not white. I do notice you said a half-black - but you didn't say half-white or attempted to give any credit to his mother who is white.

I do not at all seek to support Mugabe here or anywhere at anytime. However, you seem to racialize everything to the point that you assert that people use their skin to think and not their brains.

If anything, it is that mentality of people like you that confir heroism to people like Mugabe.

Only uncompromizing people like Mugabe can deal with extremist like you.

If it is your honest belief that black people cannot lead simply becaus hey are black - you for sure as bad as Mugabe if not worse than Mugabe.

Silence,

As we speak - the American economy is in bad shape. Is George W. Bush black?

An economy is in fact affected by the prevailing political environment.

At this moment, the Zimbabwean political environment is certainly not favourable hence the economy.

The issue of corruption is indeed a big factor - but it is false to suggest that there is no subbortage activity aimed at destroying the Zimbabwean economy as means of enforcing regime change in Zimbabwe.

If your view that black people cannot govern why wasting time supporting the opposition, if you do not intend to have the opposition subservant to a white a government?

It's such mentality or reasoning that give people like Mugabe something to offer to black people.

Your mentality is based on nonsense - and people get vote for Mugabe to seek protection from such nonsense, at the expense of choosing a leader who is focused on good governance.

This reduces Zimbabwean politics to those who objects white supremacists versus those who just want Mugabe removed - yet all that is nonsense. We are seeking good leadership qualities in terms of economic management. Now people seek fighters.

If fighting is violent - how do you expect to have respect of human rights?

How could a person who does not believe in equality of black people to white people have any morale ground to champion human rights when you contradict the primary declaration - that all humans are equal, regardles of race, .....

Inflation like that is coming to the US due to paper money. Fiat money, yet another infringement on our rights by the gov't. Add it to the ever-growing list of violations:
They violate the 1st Amendment by opening mail, caging demonstrators and banning books like "America Deceived" from Amazon.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns during Katrina.
They violate the 4th Amendment by conducting warrant-less wiretaps.
They violate the 5th and 6th Amendment by suspending habeas corpus.
They violate the 8th Amendment by torturing.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting 2 illegal wars based on lies and on behalf of a foriegn gov't.
Support Dr. Ron Paul and save this great country.

Until about 1950, the people with the best technology and greater determination ruled. The Romans ruled the ancient Brits, the Angles and Saxons took over because they were better, in turn the Normans took over. This happened all through history, all over the world.

That was the same in Africa. After 1950 , the Soviets gave weapons and the western liberals gave money to enable the less capable to takeover, hence the disaster that is now the third-world. The 'natives' did not have the where-with-all to do it by themselves. In fact without the economic sanctions the colonialists would have still been running things. The former colonialists are the ones having the last laugh as Africa is still dependent upon outsiders.

When is Poland going to get land back from Russia? The Germans land from Poland etc.?

As for Obama. My point was that he would not be black enough to run for the presidency of Kenya. You forget blacks are capable of racism too. Why did Bob steal the farms?

I am not a racist. I judge a person on their merits(as MLK expected). I voted for Alan Keyes( a black conservative) in the primaries. He is unacceptable to the black establishment because he is conservative.

Why did a majority of blacks vote for Obama?
Why do 8 out of 9 blacks vote Democrat? After all, the Democrats were for slavery in the 1860's and Democrats imposed segregation in the South after Reconstruction.

Why does the self-selected black leadership still want(or need) affirmative action? Obama's success proves it is unwarranted.

As for the evil George W. He has more non-whites in his administration than the Clintons ever had.

Delta Juliet,

Well, black have voted for whites since history and a lot of whites are voting for obama too.

The ideal scenario is that - in today's world, it shouldn't matter. I wouldn't have to vote for candidate simply because he/she is black or white. On that note, it is wrong to dismiss a candidate on the basis of their race or predict failure by simply making reference to their skin.

On your [wrong] point that obama wouldn't win in kenya because he is not black enough - you are totally ignorant.

Here is an example:

IN MUGABE'S ZIMBABWE, ROY BANNET - A WHITE GUY, WON AN ELECTION IN 2000 when TSVANGIRAYI himself didn't win and started crying faul.

IF ROY, a white guy - could win an election in a RURAL CONSTITUENCY under the racial propaganda and heavy rigging and political violence so alleged as being prevelent in Zimbabwe especially in 2000 - why do you think OBAMA would not win KENYA.

This is why Roy Bennet won:

1. He speaks the local language (Shona) fluently
2. He has demonstrated his respect for the local people
3. He did not preach hatred and racism

Then people accepted him and voted for him and he won!
