Moderates just ahead in polls

NEW opinion polls give Israel's ruling Kadima Party, headed by moderate Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, a small edge over the hawkish Likud, led by Benjamin Netanyahu.
The polls were published today, a day after Ms Livni abandoned her efforts to form a new coalition without going to elections.

She said she would not cave in to the "impossible" demands of parliamentary factions in the current government.
