BRITAIN yesterday led European countries in condemning moves by Zimbabwe's president, Robert Mugabe, to take control of key ministries in defiance of a power- sharing deal with opposition parties.
David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, said the EU would "play no part in supporting a power grab by the Mugabe regime".

He added: "It is important that there is an international united response that says that the results of the elections (earlier
this year] need to be respected and a power grab will not be respected."

Mr Miliband also said he hoped that South Africa's former president, Thabo Mbeki, the chief mediator in Zimbabwe's political crisis, could help find a solution that would allow opposition groups to share power with Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party.

Other EU ministers said they were keeping "a close watch on the implementation of the agreement" signed on 15 September by Mr Mugabe and the opposition leader, Morgan Tsvangirai.

They said they would keep sanctions against Zimbabwe in place until they saw proof the deal was being implemented properly.

The sanctions include visa bans and asset freezes on senior Zimbabwean officials, including the president.

The condemnations came after Mr Mugabe swore in two vice-presidents ahead of talks on forming a cabinet, a move which, although not flouting the law, could further endanger power-sharing negotiations.

He had already angered the opposition by allocating important ministries to his party at the weekend.

The opposition Movement for Democratic Change has said it doubts mediation by Mr Mbeki will secure an acceptable compromise.

Mr Tsvangirai said on Sunday that his party could walk away from the power-sharing deal if Mr Mbeki's latest mediation failed to end the deadlock on dividing key ministries.

Mr Mugabe handed his party the ministries of defence, home affairs – which is in charge of the police – and finance, which will be important in eventually reviving the collapsing economy.

I'm quite sure that Mugabe is quaking in his boots after what Miliband has said.

As for Miliband, if he has no intention of doing anything practical, why doesn't he just shut up and stop making a fool of himself.

I reckon most folk realise that it is nothing to with anyone apart from Mugabe. For a man who has reduced his country to a level equivalent to the poorest in Africa he is remarkably confident he is going to get a telegram from the Queen on his hundreth birthday.

So, how many condemnations of Zimbabwe is that now that Britain have led?. I think Mugabe has cottoned on to the fact that these "Condemnations" are very empty threats.

Condemnation from the very ilk who helped to put him there! Miliband's comments will be as effective as a f**t in a Hurricane.Socialists of the Nu-Liebare persuasion will do SFA. Have they EVER admitted they screwed up? EVER?Mandelson is back, QED.

People dont like to hear this, but Africa is never going to come right until she goes back to a tribal way of life -

White people brought all the technology to Africa, end of story! Cars, planes and computers, economics and banking, democracy and systems are all white interpretations of how it should work (whether right or wrong)and that is that.
Black Africa is not a western society, it is an African society. And black Africans like Mugabe are still to this day in awe of the white mans stuff. Television, radio, flash cars and the rest are to difficult not to buy - even private jets and helicopters as well as castles are on his list - and he doesnt use his own money to buy this stuff, he uses Zimbabwean tax payers money to do so, because he is the chief.
And there is the problem, nothing much has changed since the days of tribal existence, its just that now there is so much luxury and technology to be bought that the chiefs live like white men whilst their tribe must exist like animals in a cage.

What we need is for the chiefs to go back to the tribe - Like the Massai! They are a highly organised and amazing tribe and that is Africa at its best. The Massai could teach us all a thing or two.

Milliband's party has had plenty of power grabs of their own.

As for Mugabe, he is a prime example of the total failure of Marxism.

7# Drughead.
When do you think the day will be you check you facts before posting. Thatcher was in power when Mugabe was elected. Miliband wasn't even an MP. He was voted in to power in free elections which were pressed for by the US, Russia, and that band of gangsta's that reside in your neck of the woods. Miliband may be full of hot air but at least he's not supplying him with weapons like your rag bag lot are.

#10 danbob, You mean all those socialists who demonstrated were just conservatives in disguise? And Mugabe is a Marxist! What type of conservatism is that squire? The gang of so called 'gangst's' that reside in my neck of the woods, may well the very people who haul your ignorant *sses out of the financial sh*te your beloved leaders have allowed to happen.
As for the weapons? And the UK doesn't export arms to other countries? Was it just a dream that it was your pals the French who supplied the exocet missiles which killed and injured my colleagues? Was it not the Socialist PM of dear little New Zealand who only days ago on TV proudly espoused she supported the Springbok tour of NZ in 1980? She is what persuasion? Oh! another Labour drone! As for facts my fine friend. My brother lived in Que Que in what was Southern Rhodesia.I lived in a staunch labour area most of my life.Have witnessed the excesses of Socialism for most of my life. The present Nu-Liebare Government (of non government) in UK has raped the country and reduced it to a manure heap!China is far better in almost every respect.Yet ill-informed drones like you are still 30 years behind the times.Check facts? You mean google them, like you and your ilk? Perhaps if you had witnessed many of these things with your own eyes you might think differently, but I doubt it.

The New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark demonstrated against the Springbok tour that should read supported the demonstrators! Sorry pardon
