RUSSIA'S president has said he will position missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads on the EU's border to counter a United States anti-missile shield.
During a speech bristling with criticism of the US, delivered only hours after Barack Obama's election victory Dmitry Medvedev said that Russia will station missiles in the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, surrounded by EU states, as a response to the perceived threat posed by the American shield, which will be located in Poland and the Czech Republic.

In yesterday's 85 minute address that could increase East-West tensions and heighten fears of a new Cold War, Mr Medvedev said: "To neutralise, if necessary, the anti-missile system, an Iskander missile system will be deployed."

With a range of 400 kilometres and designed to strike small targets the Iskander could easily hit the missile component of the American shield that Poland agreed to host under a deal struck with Washington this summer.

The Russian president stressed that he had "no problem with the American people and no in-born anti-Americanism", and hoped that the new American administration would move towards "full-fledged relations with Russia."

Well it's only fair for Russia to reciprocate to the US global domination. Europe has no right to station foreign US missiles on their soil so close to Russia.
Eastern Europe need to wake up to the fact that Russia is not the Soviet Union. The sooner foreign US military bases are removed from around the world the better for world peace.

Dumb politics making a bolshie speech at this time forcing Obama to show he is tough too. On the other hand it does divert domestic attention away from the plan to extend the Russian Presidential term of office.

Seems to be a logical and prudent response to The US siting missiles on Russia's borders.

This is nothing more than a less-than-subtle message to the "new American administration" from Putin's glove puppet. Kaliningrad is one of the most heavily militarised areas on earth (as well as being a haven for crooks and gangsters, military and non-military)and Russia already has a large number of tactical nuclear missiles stationed there as well as the nuclear weapons held by the Russian Air Force and the Baltic Fleet. The deployment of Iskander missiles is merely an upgrade of their existing weapons in the area but "sabre rattling" Russians being what they are, the opportunity is not wasted to make some noise.
I note that their little pip-squeek apologists do not waste the opportunity either.

Bit strange, when did they get delivered? any chance it was about the time of the olympics?

Good for Russia, all nations need to do this so they won't get taken over by the Americans. Let's hope that Obama will call off the so called missile shield in Poland as to not provoke the bear.

#4 James Donald,
Your comments carry no weight and are pointless and baseless since you so openly hate Communism and Communists. You've never left the confines of your cellar and you just quote others since you don't have neither the mind nor common sense to think or speak for yourself.

Rob--ignorance is not bliss here. You can close your eyes, put your fingers in your ears, and wish for world peace until you're blue in the face. But the fact of the matter is that Russia has strategic interests that, in conjunction with its natural resources, give it lots of leverage over Europe and the world beyond. Remember when they turned off the gas in Ukraine, in the middle of winter? That's nothing, mate. I understand you have a hard on for communism and a leftist agenda, but in this case the world will not be better if Russia is just allowed to proceed unimpeded as you wish.

#7 Postmark-55,Red China - "Your comments carry no weight..." - and your drivel does? Aside from being a fit of pique, is there actually ant point in the twaddle you have posted here?
You just stick to trying to wind up the watch, old man.

11 James Donald,
Like I said before Jimmy boy, your comments carry no weight because of your obvious hate of Communism and Communists and since I'm one of THEM you have nothing good to say about me.
And I don't need to wind my watch since I have you to wind up and your spring is about to be sprung.

Now back to the article, Russia is doing what it's doing strictly because of what the Americans are doing and that's all there's to it.
If you weren't a Communist hater you could see that but since you've never lived life and seen what goes on in the real world it's somewhat difficult for you to comprehend.
If Scotland had Putin for a leader you'd be independent now.

#12 Postmark-55,Red China - Whatever you say, old man. One should always try to help the aged an humour the witless.
Russia is merely upgrading the vast arsenal of weaponry it has on land annexed by the Soviet Union and colonised by Russian settlers. If you are blinded by your adherence to a discredited and evil ideology then that is your problem.
Scotland is a democracy and has no place for vicious autocrats like Putin. If Scotland wants independence, all it has to do is vote for it. No need for ex-KGB scum.

#13 James Donald,
So Jimmy boy, you're now left with your "whatever" comment, a true sign that you've lost the argument.
Scotland and the Scots have voted for independence but a vote means nothing, thus Communism.
Like I said before if Putin was your leader you would be independent but your "elected" officials sell you out time and again and in the meantime you have to keep supporting that useless monarchy of yours and all your votes do squat. The true scum would be the likes of Blair and Brown who only kiss US butt and you are happy to vote for them time and again.
The US and you guys were guilty of initiating the Cold War just to keep the fear mongering alive.
When that finally ended you turned your sights on the Middle East but have bitten off far more than you can chew and the sad thing is that none of you will ever learn.

LONG LIVE COMMUNISM AND THE EVER PROUD CHINA.

#14 Postmark-55,Red China - Mugs that post T-shirt slogans like "LONG LIVE COMMUNISM AND THE EVER PROUD CHINA" in block capitals have no argument and glib comments like "your comments carry no weight..." indicate nothing other than the feeble mindedness of the poster.
"Scotland and the Scots have voted for independence" - This must have been falsely reported to you by your press as there has never been an occaision where the majority of Scots have voted for independence. Adding a posturing thug like Putin, with his macho Mussolini impersonations, would make little difference to that.
Of course, as a deluded Communist, I would expect your explanation of the Cold War to be along the lines of "The US and you guys were guilty of initiating the Cold War just to keep the fear mongering alive", no doubt to prevent the glorious Red Army from "liberating" the rest of Europe (that's how the Communist BS version goes isn't it?). Nothing to do with the fact that the Soviet Union enslaved most of Eastern Europe, Communism being an ideology that all of them ditched at the first opportunity.
Save your rabid rantings on why Communism failed for the comrades; it cuts no ice here.

The Russian controlled region of Kaliningrad (named after a vicious old Bolshevik and Stalin loyalist Mikhail Kalinin) was previously a quiet, picturesque and mostly argicultural part of East Prussia before the Communists turned it into an industrial/military hell hole (the ethnic Germans and Lithuanians living there were "ethnically cleansed"). It is also a haven for organised crime as this old article from the Guardian illustrates:
"But those who dream of Kaliningrad as a "Hong Kong of the Baltic" need to face up to some formidable obstacles. The region suffers from appalling pollution, for example, and extensive drug and health problems, including a very high incidence of HIV and tuberculosis.
It is also a centre of organised crime. Some estimates suggest that more than 50% of Kaliningrad's income now comes from "informal activity" (as it is euphemistically known).
The EU is providing financial and technical assistance to help Kaliningrad deal with these problems. In recent years Kaliningrad has received €15m of EU assistance. Another €15m is on its way".

Too much sabre-rattling from Putin and his glove puppet, and the Russians will have to re-supply this occupied territory entirely by sea.

Russia was out for Russia before the United States existed. Putin wants to be Czar. If our missiles didn't exist, he'd find another excuse to dominate Europe. If the Europeans reading this are miffed at America: fine. Don't use that as an excuse to make the same mistakes you made in 1939, trying to pretend that an enemy was not really an enemy.
Skidmark-55: As a Catholic, I don't fear you as much as I pity you. My church defeated you lot in Poland and we'll beat you in China.
