THE Rev Jesse Jackson, the controversial black American politician, yesterday apologised to Barack Obama after telling a TV interviewer he wanted to "cut his nuts off".
Mr Jackson, second only to Mr Obama in terms of prominence in the black community, made the comments after an interview with Fox Television. Unaware that the microphone was still on, he told a fellow interviewee: "Barack's been talking down to black people. I want to cut his nuts off."

As a media storm enveloped him, Mr Jackson apologised for comments he admitted were "hurtful" and insisted he was speaking regarding Mr Obama's attitude to black churches.

"I was in a conversation with a fellow guest at Fox," he told CNN. "He asked about Barack's speeches lately at black churches. I said it can come off as speaking down to black people."

Although the Democratic candidate's campaign quickly accepted the apology, few staffers felt it was a surprise.

Mr Jackson has reportedly complained in private that Mr Obama's campaign has been ignoring him and other black activists in his run for the US presidency.

While the comments have probably ended what hopes Mr Jackson had of a place in a future Obama administration, they come as a gift to the candidate in his desire to move towards the political centre. Mr Obama has been keen to distance himself from the left-wing label that the Republican John McCain has attached to him as both scramble to attract swing voters.

Mr Obama has sought to portray himself as a politician who happens to be black, rather than as a black politician.

This was based on a calculation that white voters would be turned away from a candidate who pushed a black agenda, as Mr Jackson tried and failed in a Democratic presidential primary in the 1980s. However, while this strategy has failed to dent Mr Obama's 90 per cent support among black primary voters, it has infuriated some of the African-American political establishment.

It is not the first time Mr Jackson has attacked Mr Obama. In September, the State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, reported that Mr Jackson had said Mr Obama was "acting like he's white" in his response to the arrest of six black teens in Jena, Louisiana. Mr Jackson later disputed the quote.

Mr Jackson's son, Jesse Jackson jnr, a Congressman, said he was disappointed by his father's "reckless statements."

"His divisive and demeaning comments about the presumptive Democratic nominee – and I believe the next president of the United States – contradict his inspiring and courageous career," the younger Mr Jackson said.

Meeting New Yorkers at a fundraising with his former primary rival, Senator Hillary Clinton, yesterday Mr Obama made no mention of the controversy.

Mrs Clinton, meanwhile, was anxious to show that an often bitter battle was now behind her, telling her supporters to back her former rival. "I'm grateful for all of you who have come together," she said.

Pointed warning for Obama security team

Sorry,
For a moment, I thought I was reading about the Max Mosley Nazi Sex Orgy trial.

Just shows how much of a snow job all these people put on for us. If you dislike Obama, just say it and don't be punitive or graphic in your comments. If Jesse Jackson can make a comment like this as an oops, how many other things is he lying through his teeth about!

I wish all these tired old leaders from the 70s, 80s, and 90s would just retire!

As a proud liberal, to which most of my posts will attest,I'll be the first one to call Jesse Jackson an articulate incompetent. He talks the talk but...
Besides his verbiage, which at times can be insightful but is often self-aggrandizing, he has never shown that he can actually accomplish anything tangible.

They say that Obama is having trouble getting whites to vote for him. A lot of whites don't like Jackson at all.

Jackson says something against Obama hoping to create more white voters to vote for Obama.

Of being PC he has to apologize.

Interesting Jackson discusses gelding given his own sexual history.

As for:

"While the comments have probably ended what hopes Mr Jackson had of a place in a future Obama administration"

Jackson must have been hoping it would discover somewhere a village short of an idiot.

Doublescotch - Very glad to hear you had such a good time in the old country.

I have had very little time to get up to the cottage.

It has been an indifferent summer so far. June was very wet. July has proven to be better so far.

Anyway, lass, good to hear from you. Up the HLI!!

Cheers, Dunnie.

#18 Hello Love.It was wonderful Dunie and I am not going to stay away so long again. I met a friend I had not seen in 41 years! She sid I hadn't changed. then I met an old friend of the family. who is in his eighties and he started crying. He said my mother was a beautiful woman and I looked just like her. which of course made me start crying. then my oldest sister who is almost eighty gave me my uncle's dogtags from the first world war. He was in the HLI. We discovered my father was in the Glasgow Highlanders as he was over 6foot. and the HLI was bantam and wore trews. My father always said the worse thing he could rememeber about the war was the icicles hanging from his kilt. Now I am older and know what the first war was all about I weep when I think of his words. He was wonderful and I miss him.I was only eighteen when he died. This is awful. Sorry Dunnie. Talk with you later. Still feeling sad about leaving everyone. I am away to have a doubelscotch:)

Hey Dude,

Where on the planet earth is the country called Africa-America, ??

And what's is the population of its African-Americans?

My country known as The United States of America, has a population of roughly 310 million American citizens.

So explain Ur country, with its African-American citizens. !!!

Here in the US, roughly seven in 10 black children are born out of wedlock, according to US government statistics. About 35 percent of blacks under 18 years old live below the poverty line, and 24 percent of blacks over 65 die below the poverty line.

All these black people are Americans, like me.

Iam a white American living well above the so-called poverty line.

23 Lynne,Palm Beach Gardens,

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are just a couple of two-bit rabble rouser fanatics. All countries have these fanatics. They live in the past just like the fanatics who support the SNP notion that Scotland would be better off as an independent nation.

There is an international name for their behavior. its called
WHINING and they are Whiners.

Happy Haggis Day or Soul Food Day

Excellent news to hear Obama may be coming to Berlin to speak before the Brandenburg gate. Our idiot Chancellor is being widely ridiculed for saying she had "reservations" about him coming. Nothing unusal in an former East German letting her racist ytendencies show. Apparently , it's ok for McCain to speak at the security conference in Munich, as he has on several occasions, but not ok for Obama. She will of course back down, such is the vitriol flying her way.

Obama is hugely popular in Europe, as will be demonstrated in every country he visits. McCain ?

Luckily, America like most cluturally European nations has a strong democratic constitution and an even stronger opposition, thus men like Bush and McCain who are not far removed from men like Mugabe are unable to control home affairs in the manner they crave most total domination)
Where Obama is different, is that he appears to be really interested in doing things different, which begs the question as to how he was permitted to run as presidential candidate. Usually you need to tow the line to get that far ahead, so maybe things are REALLY changing.
Obama is no war mongering massacre man, he is more inclined to approach things through dialogue and adhere to international law, which is most important.
So I for one hope he wins because America under McCain will be hell for most of the planet.

Turkey Jerky,

McCain is a fallguy for the republican party. They aren't stupid, they knew in advance that there was no way in hell they could get away with rigging the votes again after the whole Bush s.4-ep.1 debacle (by that I mean George Bush Senior's 4th reign as presisdent, or GWB Jr's 2nd)

So clever little monkeys that they are they decided not to embaress themselves too much by putting up no resistance (voting McCain as their candidate).

This way when they lose they'll be like, "McCain was just too radical, not republican at all." and the next candidate will be Fresh, Intelligent, Squeaky Clean, Frat boy, who is very efficient at covering up how morally corrupt he is.

Then they might stand a chance sooner rather than later. McCain is just filler.

Do not get tooo expextant!

Obama still needs to be endorsed by a full session of the Knesset before he will be allowed to take up the Presidency.

The final decision as to whether Obama assumes the Presidency, even if he wins the election will in the final analysis have to be taken by the Israeli Prime Minister.

Jackson does not even figure in the process.

All this rubbish about whatever Jesse Jackson Snr. said has been made into a big "issue" to distract from the fact that Obama voted in favor of legalising spying on Americans in the US, the FISA bill. This is the complete opposite of his position a few months ago, when he vowed to do everything he could to opppose this bill.

Hillary Clinton voted against it.

Since this vote, many, many of his former supporters have stopped giving money and are no longer supporting him at all.

If he's so popular in Europe, feel free to keep him.

Although socialism is quite rampant in europe, there are many here in the us that have no use for it. It promotes laziness and dependency - hardly ideals to strive for. Mr. Obama would make an excellent President ---- in europe.

Of course Jackson's comments didn't sway black voters away from support of Obama - they're only backing him because he IS black. They couldn't care less if they're being talked down to, used, lied to....he's black so that's their man, right or wrong, qualified or not.
