A GREEK court has been asked to draw the line between the natives of the Aegean island of Lesbos and the world's gay women.
Three islanders from Lesbos – home of the ancient poet Sappho, who praised love between women – have taken a gay rights group to court for using the word lesbian in its name.

The plaintiffs said their court action, led by a publisher and two women
from Lesbos, is hoped to secure a ruling which will then be used to fight the word "lesbian" internationally.

According to the charges made public yesterday, the plaintiffs from the island say that the local organisation Homosexual and Lesbian Community of Greece (OLKE) violates the human rights of the islanders and disgraces them internationally.

It says international dominance of the word in its sexual context has forced the residents and even government authorities to avoid using the island's historic name for fear of public humiliation.

Instead, it points out, Greek authorities have been printing maps and textbooks trying to rename the island Mytiline, after its capital city. The island is the third largest in Greece after Crete and Rhodes.

The charges say: "To use this word and to get it imposed internationally constitutes a rape of our historic identity and our human rights."

Conceding that the word lesbian with its sexual meaning has succeeded in establishing itself in all world languages, it added: "Instead, we have been forced to avoid its use, fearing that we will be socially misunderstood and ridiculed both within Greece and internationally."

The legal action calls on the court to force the lesbian homosexual association to change its name within ten days of a verdict, or else to impose one-year imprisonment terms and a fine of 10,000 for each of its executive members as a means of forcing compliance.

The OLKE association also issued a statement yesterday describing the legal action as "groundless" and a "violation of freedom of expression". It said the Greek lesbian women would fight the case in court.

WOMEN IN LOVE

SAPPHO was born between 630 BC and 612 BC, and died around 570 BC. The bulk of her poetry has been lost, but her reputation has endured through surviving fragments.

Sappho's poetry revolves around passion and love for various personages and genders. The narrators of many of her poems speak of love for various women, but descriptions of physical acts between women are few and subject to debate.

I thought the natives of Greek islands ending in 'os' were referred to by adding the suffix 'iot' as in Cyprus - Cypriot, Skyros - Skyriot, Paxos - Paxiot, and Lesbos - Lesbiot. Problem solved. No confusion. No need to change the island's name.

The first history book was written by a Greek named Herodotus. It was an account of the Persian wars and what led up to them (reference the movie 300). The name of the book was "History." No joke. It is the Greek word for "inquiry."

In his account of the climactic battles on land and sea, warriors from Lesbos were often mentioned along with warriors from Thespiae. So when reading the book you will come across a passage that will say something like, "and they were accompanied by 85 Lesbian warriors." Its not really funny but I defy anyone who isn't prepared for it to read it without bursting our laughing.

Not only that, but at the battle of Thermopylae, after it became clear that the Spartans had been flanked and were doomed, King Leonidas sent all of the allied soldiers who had accompanied the Spartans home. The only ones who absolutely refused were the hoplites from Thespiae. So you will read something like, "The Spartans accompanied by the Thespians prepared for battle." So there you have it. The term Spartans has echoed down the halls of time, always bringing with it the notion extreme masculinity. The terms Lesbians and Thespians, not so much.

They should be fighting for an international ban on the use of the word "gay" to describe homosexuals. I have never understood why, when homosexuals declare they are open about their activities, they have to resort to using a euphemism. This use has also virtually destroyed a perfectly good word in the English language. Why can't they just call themselves homosexuals, or sodomites, or any of the myriad number of other words for them.

Incidentally, for the benefit of the Hootsmon (Pravda Branch) Censors, the word "sodomite" is a perfectly good word which can be found in the Oxford English Dictionary. So, if you censor my post, you will, effectively be censoring the English language.

I once had a post bounced back because it contained a four letter word that rhymes with "boss" but begins with the letter T. The context was that a small object was being lobbed through the air from one person to another. What's up with that?

#7 With so many differing forms of sexual f*replay and engagement of the act itself in myriad positions (qv Kama Sutra)... define "the norm"! And if you can do that ... what are you offering as the "norm"? The missionary position? How boring!

btw ... f*replay is deemed "potentially unsuitable" by the Hootsmon. Has the detector been programmed by a prude??

If your main worry in life is that you can't use the word 'gay' anymore in case someone thinks you're a 'sexual deviant' (your term), you're clearly a bit of a saddo. Gay people don't try to stop heterosexuals 'ruining' the term 'straight' - mainly because we don't actually care what you do or how you define yourself (also we have better things to do).

Why not? Champange has to come from Champange, Port from Portugal, Forfar Briedies from Forfar, Arbroath Smokies from Arbroath, Canadians from Canada and Lesbians from Lesbos

I kind of feel sorry for the Greeks, I mean having not only the name of your Nationality used a slang for analsex but also having an island synonimus with female homosexuality, not to mention all the jokes about goats.

Then you have the name Macedonia appropriated by you Northern Neighbors. After all King Philiip was probably the only ancient Greek who actually prefered women.

I mean wouldn't you be a little pissed if every time hollywood did a movie about your countries history they emphasised how bent your ancestors were?

If you are not prepared to have people comment why do you chose to feature stories about provocative subjects like female sexual behaviour.

Let me guess, today is the day the auditors count your circulation numbers.

I have not seen this much Red since Knicker Washday at Wendy Alexanders House.

Who knows, maybe lesbians everywhere are horrified to be associated with the conservative inhabitants of Lesbos?! The world is full of this type of thing. In fact "The Scotsman" has employed the term 'pygmy' in a derogatory fashion; I am sure that the pygmies of the Ituri Forest in the Congo would have objected. And what should we call the inhabitants of Kafiristan? Officially they are Kafirs. And so on and so fifth. I myself have taken to writing and talking about AmerUSAns so as not to get up the noses of hypersensitive Americans who do not come from the USA, especially Canadians. (It's similar to referring to "England" instead of the U.K. or Britain.) So I suggest that the good (and bad) people of Lesbos invent a completely new adjective for themselves, such as Lesbosian, Lesbosan, or even Lesboan. It's not difficult, really it isn't!

"Champange has to come from Champange ... Forfar Briedies from Forfar ..."

Typos are typos, but "Briedies" is a slip too far, not to mention "Champange" - twice. Coincidentally I'm off to Champagne tomorrow for a glass or two, and a delectable imported Bridie if lucky.

Strange that I was not allowed to write hom0-sapien in a comment yesterday, yet this mighty organ can publish the word hom0sexual for anyone on the streets to read.

Reckon the Scotsman staff and moderator have spent too much time on Greek islands as they seem to emulate ex- Cretians

See. They've done it again. Why can they print hom0 and I am not allowed to by them? Are they something special?
