Hopes for talks on Burma democracy

BURMA'S main opposition party said yesterday that it hopes a visit today by a United Nations special envoy will help restart talks between the pro-democracy leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, who remains under house arrest, and the ruling military junta.
Ibrahim Gambari is spending five days promoting national reconciliation.

The only reason that the Military junta (a.k.a. the tinpot little dictatorship) remains in power in Burma is because of the support it gets from your gangster government.

There isn't going to be any pro-democracy movement in Burma because although the present junta aren't very nice people, they aren't stupid. W. S. Churchill said, "Tyrants ride to and fro upon the backs of tigers they dare not dismount." There is absolutely nothing for the junta to gain by making concessions. It is likely, IMHO, that they have plans to liquidate all meaningful opposition just as soon as the eyes of the world are drawn elsewhere. They may appear to be talking but what they are really doing is laughing up their sleeves.

This is a pathetic charade. The toothless UN is pretending to weigh in while in reality they are just going through the motions. They know it, the Burmese gangsters who run the country know it, and so we witness this hideous ballet designed to promote the appearance of meaningful action, while in reality it is a Potemkin Village of diplomatic stage props. These people are beneath human contempt.
