SOMALIA'S hardline Islamist group al-Shabaab has publicly whipped women for wearing bras which, they say, violate Islam by constituting a deception.
The insurgent group, which seeks to impose a strict form of Sharia Islamic law throughout Somalia, also amputated a foot and a hand each from two young men accused of robbery earlier this month. They have also banned movies, musical ringtones, dancin
g at weddings and playing or watching football.

Residents in north Mogadishu said gunmen had rounded up any young woman seen with a firm bust and had them publicly whipped by masked men if they were found to be wearing bras.

A resident, Halima, said her daughters had been whipped on Thursday. "They first introduced a hard fabric which stands stiffly on women's chests. They now say breasts should be firm naturally, or just flat."

Officials of al-Shabaab, which Washington says is al-Qaeda's proxy in the failed Horn of Africa state, declined to comment. The group's hardline interpretation of Islamic law has shocked many Somalis, who are traditionally moderate Muslims. Some residents, however, give the insurgents credit for restoring order to regions under their control.

Al-Shabaab, which means "youth" in Arabic, controls large swathes of south and central Somalia.

Abdullahi Hussein, a student in north Mogadishu, said his elder brother was thrown behind bars when he fought back a man who humiliated their sister by asking her to remove her bra.

"My brother was jailed after he wrestled with a man that had beaten my sister and forced her to remove her bra. He could not stand it," Mr Hussein said.

Men were not spared the "moral cleansing". Any man caught without a beard was also publicly whipped.

"I was beaten and my hair was cut off with a pair of scissors in the street," Mr Hussein said. "My trousers were also cut up to the knee. They even accused me of shaving off my beard, but I am only 18.

"They have arrested dozens of men and women. You just find yourself being whipped by a masked man as soon as leave your house."

Sharia Islamic law is alive and thriving in the UK underground.

Why do the British allow this to continue. Is there a backbone missing here.

"The group's hardline interpretation of Islamic law has shocked many Somalis, who are traditionally moderate Muslims."

It is the extremist hardliners who cause the problems.

Condeming all muslims plays into their hands.

#3, It's called political correctness and positive discrimination. Plus we have the European human rights legislation which ensures that the perpetrators of crimes have more rights than their victims. So whereas in the States a murderer will get 20 years or more and will serve that sentence, here in the UK 'life' means 12 years and under the human rights act, out in 6.

Lies and more lies.

There never has been nor will there ever be anyone convicted of murder here in the UK released after serving only 6 years of a life term 12 1/2 years is about the average before being released on licence.

So take your right wing propaganda and shove it where the sun don,t shine.

one thing is for sure that political correctness is a live and well in Britain.

would it not be nice to hear for a change the "moderate Muslims" condemn such actions rather than remain silent after all their is nothing wrong with their voices when it comes to teddy bears cartoons or any other non serious situation or is it not serious enough when it comes to women?

For a minute there it seems you were happy to point out that murderers get a WHOLE 12.5 years in prison. Surely not.

I remember reading that one of the three Abrhamic religions whose devotees worship the intolerant Asian God of the Jews via his crucified Bedouin Rabbi Son burnt Bruno for merely speculating that other worlds besides the earth could exist in the universe. Gallileo almost suffered the same fate Leonardo devised a form of code for his research to protect himself from prosecution as an heretic.

These worshippers of the same intolerant, monotheistic Asian God that the Muslims worship under the name of Allah murdered and tortured thousands during what are known as the burning times in Europe. The British Colony of America also did not escape the sadistic cruelty during this time, remember the Salem Witch trials?

Compare these barbaric religions those of tolerant Pagan Europe that gave us the gift of democracy conceived of in the mind of Pericles in the Athens of 400 B.C. Hippocrates in 500 B.C. laid down medical ethics that were not to be surpassed for 2,500 years. Not a bad monument for tolerant European Paganism.

This is not the right thing to do with defenseless women.
