A TEAM of rowers led by three Edinburgh adventurers have broken the world record for crossing the Atlantic.
Skipper Leven Brown, Rob Loder-Symonds and Reinhardt Von Hof, along with 11 other rowers on board La Mondiale landed in Port St Charles Barbados last night, beating the previous record by more than two days. The crew left Puerto Mogan in Gran Canaria on December 15 and during their journey they frequently rowed more than 100 miles a day. The official time for the record was 33 days, seven hours and 30 minutes.

Mr Brown, 35, a stockbroker from Abbeyhill, was joined in his celebrations by his 15-month-old daughter Pickle.

He said the task was a gruelling one, but they were delighted to have beaten the record. "I am very wobbly," the 35-year-old said. "But it is a great feeling. I'm off the boat, my daughter is in my arms, it's wonderful."

I will say it again, what is the point of this? Self indulgence. Was the crew they beat for the record really trying and by beating them what have they achieved?

There's a point to doing it. Try pushing yourself to the limit and maybe you'll get why they do it.

#3 well I might if I did not have a job and family to keep. I don't put "adventurer" on my job description.
More money than sense or put another way, a waste of time and money. Maybe I am wrong of course, I mean the money this would have cost will be minimal. What? Costs thousands to put together. Well maybe they found a cure for something? What? No, they only did it two days quicker than the last lot. Tell them to try flying the next time, visiting an airport will show them what stress is. Use Easyjet and indurance comes into it as well.

James 1, perhaps James you would like a portion of fish, to go with that very large chip you have on your shoulder. My husband was one of the fantastic group of 14 who rowed the Atlantic and yes beat a record, a record that had stood for 15 years and had, had 60 attempts to beat it. Liam took 2 months unpaid leave from his job, left me and our 2 boys (aged 5 and 6) behind to follow a dream, to take on a challenge, to break a record and in the process raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for our local cardiac center. Perhaps before you are so quick to judge the actions of other as purely indulgent, you should take stock of your own life go on set yourself a challenge, who knows you may then find something better to do with your time than belittling the efforts of people who have a dream and are not to scared to to follow it. James may I suggest you spend a month in a small boat in a big ocean, go on I dare you perhaps it will be good for you.
