AN explosion near an army recruitment office in New York's Times Square caused minor damage with no injuries, authorities said last night.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the attack in the heart of Manhattan "insults every one of our brave men and women in uniform stationed around the world".

As the joint terrorism taskforce, including FBI agents, the NYPD and other US agencies, investigated the blast at the site of previous anti-war protests, the mayor vowed that the "coward" responsible would be "prosecuted to the full extent of the law".

British tourists staying in nearby hotels said the explosion, which happened at about 3:45am local time, shook buildings high above the "crossroads of the world".

The device, a low grade explosive packed into an ammunition box, caused minor damage to the empty station and left a large hole in the front window and shattered a glass door.

"The fact that this appears to be deliberately directed at the recruiting station insults every one of our brave men and women in uniform stationed around the world fighting to defend our freedom and the things that we hold so dear," Mr Bloomberg said.

500+ military bases required to defend "our" freedom and things "we" hold dear?

So, nothing about economic policy, power, energy and raw cash then?

Oppressing others is no way to defend freedom.

God help the person if and when he/she gets caught. There will be avalanche of jingoistic, pro military, nationalistic bull with his/her defenders pushed into the dilemma of "If you are for this person you un patriotic!" So much for freedom.

Kiss a soldier, finnking. People have died to defend the freedom you take for granted whilst sitting at your computer and spouting "so much for freedom."

Tell me what state based soldiers have fought and died for my "freedom"? The German troops of WWII believed they were fighting to protect freedom and so too did the Russians and British troops.

Most wars are organised by the elites and fought and paid for by the herd in order to either cull the herd or gain something.

Mercenaries have a higher morality than the national ones; at least they have a true belief (cash) and not some contorted, indoctrinated, servile nationalism such as is drilled into the soldiers of state.

War is not about morality. It's about business.

Jolly good, Finnking. Anti-war rhetoric for the under fourteens. Not untrue, just trite.

Instead of yattering on about how evil war (and, usually, the United States) is, how about you share with us some of your ideas on how to end it?

And please, try to keep them within shooting distance of reality.

John Blackley,

"Anti-war rhetoric for the under fourteens"
