ITALY'S famously impolitic prime minister Silvio Berlusconi described the United States president-elect, Barack Obama, yesterday as "young, handsome and even tanned".
Mr Berlusconi appeared to be joking about the United States' first black president at a news conference following talks with Russia's president.

He said, smiling: "I told the president that (Mr Obama] has everything needed in order to reach deals
with him: he's young, handsome and even tanned."

Dmitry Medvedev did not visibly react to the comment.

Italian news agencies said Mr Berlusconi later defended the remark to reporters as he returned to his hotel in Moscow, calling the statement "a great compliment".

"Why are they taking it as something negative? ... If they have the vice of not having a sense of humour, worse for them," the ANSA news agency quoted him as saying.

Mr Berlusconi is infamous for eyebrow-raising comments. He once compared a German parliamentarian to a Nazi camp guard.

Italy's only black member of parliament, Jean-Leonard Touadi, called the comment embarrassing. "In the United States, a joke like that wouldn't just be politically incorrect, but a great offence to this amazing example of integration, which it seems the Italian premier should take as an example," Mr Touadi said.

It seems that no-one can make any jokes nowadays without triggering a major outcry.... unless of course they are either stupid or pitched at nursery school level.

Here in Spain, the comments are seen are really funny.

The problem is that people in the UK have lost their sense of humour.

Brits are among the most racist people on the planet. Enjoy!

Berlusconi said "If they have the vice of not having a sense of humour, worse for them: they are stupid; we confer them a degree as dic.head"
Another time Berlusconi has brought universal dishonour upon us: I apologise to everybody.

Ok, the US African-American population just voted for a President Because of the color of his skin, and now the rest of the world can't mention it?

Ridiculous.

And before anybody calls me a racist for telling the truth, watch the news and listen, before you pass judgement.

Berlusconi is a joke himself and a fool to boot.

It IS true that a fool and his money are seldom parted.

All of his wealth will not buy him intelligence, courtesy, politeness, or insouciance.

And I hope his latest facelift falls to his feet. And the colour of his hair - a hue not known to Mother Nature in any of her multitudinous forms.

He made a joke, even tanned is about right - he is black, but he is also white. His grandparents are white, but also black - he is a man of the people no matter their race, colour or creed. He is the man for the job!

If anyone if ashamed by the Italians remarks they should be ashamed of themselves for being so patronising and sickening in their attempts to portray themselves as politically correct model citizens.

Calling someone even tanned is not that bad a remark.

You are incorrect in your presumptuous assumption about my sexuality.

Also, what has that to do with the story/

You really should stay on topic and stop promoting your various agendas that show a lack of insightful intelligence and the ability to assess a story based on the fact contained therein.

You must be the resident fool at any intelligent conversation, discussion, or informal chat.

I LIKE your netname.

I have my good days and my BAD days?

It is always a struggle to decide what or who I will be on certain days.

Does the fact that I am a Pisces account for this "ambivalence"?

Thank you for your concerned concern.
