AUSTRIAN officials are hoping the family of far-right extremist Joerg Haider will hold a private funeral to prevent neo-Nazis turning any public burial into a pilgrimage of hate.
Vienna has announced that public buildings in the capital will be draped in black flags when the body of Mr Haider, 58, is interred.

However, yesterday it was still unclear whether national government representatives would be attending any funera
l or remembrance service for Mr Haider, who died in a car crash early on Saturday morning.

Mr Haider courted controversy by praising aspects of the Third Reich and was a hero of ultra-rightists across Europe.

One Austrian civil servant said: "The spectre of thousands, or even tens of thousands, of his supporters marching on Carinthia (the state where he was governor] to say farewell to him would be as unwelcome as it would be dangerous."

The populist right-winger – architect of the Alliance for the Future party, which scored 11 per cent of the vote in Austria's general election two weeks ago –

was driving at nearly 90 mph, more than twice the speed limit, when he crashed, it was revealed last night. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by emergency workers.

His death came as Austrian political parties were still horse-trading about how to govern the country following no clear victory for any single bloc. The Freedom Party that Haider brought into government in Austria in 2000 won, together with his new party, almost a third of the vote, making them a potent force.

Police rejected "wild" conspiracy theories swirling around the cause of the crash. They say the car was "virtually obliterated" after it smashed against a concrete post and a fire hydrant.

Thomas Koperna, director of the hospital where Haider's body was taken, said he suffered a broken spine, a virtually severed left arm and massive chest and head injuries.

You're in fine fettle this beautiful morning.

I laughed at your misspelling.

Have a wonder day and don't exhaust your dogs by jogging with them for 5 miles.

Just what Austrian needs - a public and misplaced outpouring of grief for that despicable crypto-Nazi and right-wing fool.

He was a force for evil in life and he does not need to be memorialised in any way - except by his immediate family only.

Dr. James Wilkie,

I knew Jörg Haider personally, and I met him on many occasions over the years. He was undoubtedly a magnetic personality, and he did a great deal of good by shaking up the complacent Austrian political establishment. The expression "far right" has to be taken with a bucket of salt. Haider was not an extremist; he was not even a populist, as is often claimed, but rather an opportunist, a chameleon with a natural talent for seizing the main chance.

After his more unfortunate utterances led to his expulsion from the third-force Freedom Party (FPÖ), he founded a new one which, until the recent election, had been almost confined to Carinthia, where he continued as a successful - and immensely popular - Landeshauptmann (Governor). When, however, the BZÖ got 11% of the vote at the general election in September it became a national political factor. The FPÖ and BZÖ together now have almost a third of the voting power in parliament, and would be capable of participating in a coalition government, of which both have experience. Now that Haider is out of the way, the major obstacle to a reunification of the third force has been removed.

Accusations of being "far right" are a standard form of denigrating anyone who is merely EU-sceptical and anti-immigration, etc. The Austrian Socialists have used this smear for many years for party advantage. They deliberately got up the notorious Waldheim affair as well as the EU sanctions when it looked like the elections were not going to go their way, with disastrous results in both cases. It will be interesting to see if they have learned their lesson this time round.

You know NOTHING about me yet you pass judgment on me.

I think your presumptuousness is appalling.

I have achieved much and continue to do so.

So - until you know my accomplishments - desist from your flaccid fulminations.
