THE cheering crowds had gathered and the media was in mass attendance as only it can be in America. But the well-wishers and star spotters - buoyed by earlier appearances from Bill and Hillary Clinton – were left waiting for the guests of honour themselves.
Yesterday, as the wedding of Chelsea Clinton to her long-time boyfriend Marc Mezvinsky was due to be under way – those who had gathered on the streets of the usually quiet little town of Rhinebeck went without a glimpse of the star attractions.

Th
e marriage of Chelsea, only child of former president Bill Clinton and US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, had been billed as the closest Americans will get to having a Royal wedding of their own.
But the wedding, reputedly costing millions of pounds, was cloaked in secrecy, only adding to the speculation about everything from the guest list to the toilets the A-listers would be using during the luxury reception.

Fans yesterday gathering before the wedding was due to start had to content themselves with glimpses of notables such as Ted Danson and his wife Mary Steenburgen, designer Vera Wang and Madeleine Albright, the former Secretary of State.

The father of the bride helped kick off the frenzy on Friday with a short walk around town, meeting locals much inconvenienced by the arrival of the wedding entourage – not that they seemed to care, given the high esteem in which the Clinton clan, and Chelsea in particular, are held in the US.

Looking laid-back in blue jeans and a black knit shirt, Clinton (and his security men) wandered down the main street to the Gigi Trattoria, amid a shower of questions and greetings from the crowds. Asked how the family was doing, he replied: "We're all fine. We love it here. Chelsea loves the area as well."

Later, onlookers were treated to a wave from Hillary, resplendent in a long green, flowing dress, as the couple left their hotel.
Rumours had abounded that the plan to marry in Rhinebeck was an elaborate decoy arranged by the media-shy Chelsea, 30, to throw the press pack off her scent.

But in the hours leading up to the nuptials yesterday, the conspiracy theories subsided as speculation turned to what the secretive celebrations would involve for the 400-plus guests.

They were rumoured to include director Steven Spielberg, and some of the Clintons' powerful political allies.

The cost of the wedding has been the subject of much debate. While one family friend insisted the bill would be no more than $1 million (£638,000) others have suggested the cost could be between $2m (£1.28m) and $3m (£1.9m). Some have even suggested an eye-watering price-tag of $5m (£3.2m) – compared with the $24,000 (£15,000) cost of the average American wedding.

For this kind of money, you would expect the facilities to be top-notch and the family appeared to have left nothing to chance as the reception kicked off yesterday evening.

The wedding took place at Astor Courts, the 50-acre former estate of the millionaire John Jacob Astor IV on the banks of the Hudson river. The 13,000ft pavilion was built between 1902 and 1904 and designed to resemble the Grand Trianon at Versailles.

Around $630,000 (£400,000) was spent on erecting the marquees, while a further $120,000 (£75,000) went on the tables and crockery. The bride also ordered a $11,000 (£7,000), five-tier, gluten-free wedding cake.
All the local businesses lucky enough to be involved, such as caterers, florists and clothing designers, were made to sign confidentiality agreements four months ahead of the big day. And despite the fevered efforts of the media, none seemed to break the code of silence.

I don't think of the Clintons as "royal" in any stretch of the word. They're definitely a power couple but that comes from political power so far.
If the US had a family that rose to the idea of "royal family", I'd say it was John and Jackie Kennedy. We lost John Jr. too soon so we never saw him blossom into a having family, but when Caroline's children get married- I think then we may sense a bit of that lingering Camelot.

IRISH LOVE STORY

An elderly man lay dying in his bed. While suffering
the agonies of impending death, he suddenly smelled the aroma of his favourite scones wafting up the stairs.

He gathered his remaining strength, and lifted himself
from the bed. Leaning on the wall, he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, and with even greater effort, gripping the railing with both hands, he crawled downstairs.

With laboured breath, he leaned against the door-frame, gazing into the kitchen. Were it not for death's agony, he would have thought himself already in heaven, for there, spread out upon the kitchen table were literally hundreds of his favourite scones.

Was it heaven? Or was it one final act of love from his devoted Irish wife of sixty years, seeing to it that he left this world a happy man?

Mustering one great final effort, he threw himself
towards the table, landing on his knees in rumpled posture. His aged and withered hand trembled towards a scone at the edge of the table, when it was suddenly smacked by his wife with a wooden spoon......

"Sod off" she says, "they're for the funeral."

"America revels in its own 'Royal wedding'"

More like a sham of the father flashing the cash!, The wedding should have been all about Chelsea and her love for Marc, and vice-versa,
But Instead, Daddy makes a Meal-Of-It, for his own dwindling personal Glamour,

Better you run Chelsea Girl! out of your Daddy's Arms, before he has ideas of becoming a Grandad,

Be Just You Chelsea Girl, I am sure your a lovely person, not to be viewed as $notes.

Jim A,

Remember that you are married, are you disgruntled by being so?

8

Jim A,

No Charles I am not disgruntled, please don't confuse my feeble attempts at humour with anything else. Beside Charlie boy, your the last one on here that should be giving advice on marriage and running away. Thirty four years and still going strong here Charlie.

Jim A,

"Thirty four years and still going strong here", Well Done!, You should be proud!, and not another "good man lost", like me, through no faults of my own, but devastated and saddened for all all the true love I gave and still gives, but not realised through Mental illness.

I hope they remembered all the people who were murdered by the bride's parents so that they would have the money to pay for a lavish wedding.

The Clintons may be bad but to say that the loathesome corrupt Kennedys should be regarded as Royalty is sick. Don't forget where the family money came from - Old Man Joe Kennedy was a bootlegger and gangster operating hand in hand with The Mafia. How do you think the votes for Jack were delivered in Chicago in 1960?

2dogs.. the wedding was beautiful..and my son was the happiest I have ever seen him.
His best man was his brother who made a beautiful toast about best friends and brothers. Some how,I don't know when, my kids listened to us, as they were growing up!!! Life lessons weren't all for forgotten !! :)

Jim A.. I know your sense of humor, and my son has 2 good role models. Her parents are married over 50 years, and my husband and I 43.. here's hoping they have the same.

nice article, except that America is not revelling in a 'royal wedding'.

The Americans are very disconnected and alienated from the elite leadership. for several years in the 2000's we had money supply growth of 25% or more. Now it is declining by 10% a year. That is what happened between the 1920's and the 1930-1933 period. For 10 years now virtually every single month we have a smaller percentage of Americans working than in the previous month. our newspapers are full of stories about how we need guest workers. Employers every day even today hire illegal immigrants without any real penalty at all to the employer. the wages being offerred to workers in new jobs are the same as what was offerred in the early 1960's after adjusting for inflation. We had 66 Americans killed in July in the Afghan war. this doesn't count the number killed in Iraq or somalia or elsewhere.

Never have our people been so alienated from the leadership class.

Lynne, glad to hear your son's special day went so well,
I have a quandary, the estranged one sister is getting married in two weeks time, I have been invited to her wedding, but my other half not, should I attend?
It will feel strange for me, I just don't know what to do,
Cause I'm quite depressed.

Here is a link to the actual wedding, blah, blah,
It takes a tad to load so be patient, you have to copy this into google or bling, some mad advert at the start, but beggars can't be choosers :))

Lynne,

Charles.. That's a hard one. First, you owe allrgiance to your wife, who is not acknowledged by your sister..
Send your regrets.. your wife is not dead, and whether she wanted her there or not, the perogative to respond no was your wife's... not hers.
Knowing how much you love your beautiful wife.. stay home. (your sister probably thought that would be what you would anyway.)
23

Lynne,

02/08/2010 06:39:52
Charles... sorry to sound like Ann Landers.. don't be depressed.. your sister deliberately did not invite your wife.. the blame is at her feet.

#20 Charles Linskaill...

Pardon my butting in on the dilemma over your wife not being invited to her own sister's wedding, but you are.
Lynne was right in my opinion, and it doesn't change.
It still holds true, for whether it is any family member or freind for that matter, your allegiance is to your wife, period.
Send regrets to your sister-in-law and wish her the best for her marriage if you want (no sense in adding fuel to the fire) but that's all.
There really is no dilemma on your part after all!

Pardon me Lynne for interjecting in your response!

Charles..except for this response, I am no longer posting threads in Scotsman, as I am disgusted with the troll(s) with multiple names insulting Lynne, myself and others in the horrible manner done, and I refuse to be a part of a this and waste my time with Scotsman postings.

ScotLJM,
thankyou for your advice also and it was no problem in "butting in", even though the wife does not live with me she still is my wife, therefor my allegence is still with her in a sense,
sorry to learn you will no longer comment here, there seems to be a new breed that purposely in out their way to mock others rather than giving input on subject and question views,
all the best,
Charles.

Lynne,

Charles.. sister, sister-in-law... it doesn't matter..
lol.. send a note thanking her for the invitation, but you won't be able to make it.

This is new breed you mention to ScotLJM.. it amounts to 1 or 2 people, who have decided that no one should voice an opinion different from them, so they hurl insults. I consider them nothing but racists and bigots.

Jim A. in 18, I do not believe that my comment in #16 harmed anybody's wedding. If you want to be a boot-licker and worship people whom you are told are better than you, then by all means, that is your choice. But don't try to stop me from feeling different. I only made the point in #16 that the vast majority of Americans are very alienated from rich people like chelsea clinton as she is in the ruling class. she's been given jobs that are very high paying jobs simply for being in that class. The economy is very unjust today. Massive quantities of money are created from thin air and simply passed out to privileged rich people. Our government itself has held our currency too expensive for our people to prosper. There is a ruling class that is oppressing us. I'll stick with the people and I don't give a rats a$$ if you don't like it. and 90% of the Americans are with me. I don't think it irrelevant to our discussion to merely say these things.

The fellow above who commented that her parents are criminals responsible for many murders around the world is 100% correct. the fellow who spoke about starvation is correct too. Every day 35,000 people die from starvation. And every day the US government pays to have food grain bought up and turned into ethanol even though the process wastes both money and energy. This causes starvation directly. Chelsea Clinton's mother is a member of the government that does that. why should we respect any of them?

here's what real Americans think of Chelsea's wedding. I'm sure the boot-lickers find the point of view of common Americans to be inconsistent with their priorities. we've no respect for them either.

Charles, that article was written by Paul Craig Roberts. If you want to read a lot of interesting articles, then just search for his. Paul Craig Roberts was once extolled in the conservative magazine National Review as being 'Mr. Conservative'. In the 1970's he was 'Mr. Conservative' in that he was the top editorial page editor of the Wall Street Journal, he wrote for all the conservative journals and he served on boards of all the conservative organizations. Ronald Reagan brought him into the government. PCR has a phd in economics. He was assistant secretary of treasury. He authored the 1981 tax cut bill. PCR has also been called the father of reaganomics.

All through the 1990's PCR's columns were published in 150 or so major US newspapers. Then after GW Bush became president in 2001 he began to really rip into Bush and the Republicans. At that time all newspapers ceased carrying him. Since then his articles which have been many have been published only on a few internet spots. He is today in an elderly condition. Since we Americans have so few leaders that are worthy, we must really respect and appreciate the few that we have. Such a man is Paul Craig Roberts.

The fact that PCR was kicked out of the mass media should speak very loudly to Europeans who dream that somehow America will recover. There are no anti-war sentiments at all allowed to be expressed in the mass media unless it is for the sake of discrediting such anti-war sentiments. PCR, the arch-conservative, was kicked out by many media groups that are considered liberal. Why? because he spoke with credibility against the agenda of the fascists.

I took my Location field 'by the rivers of babylon' from Psalm 137 because I wish to communicate that America is a captive nation, ruled over by a hostile tyrant. My forefathers used to say 'no king but jesus'. We built our own government in an effort to cause 'we the people' to rule here. We failed. and now we wait for the 2'nd

2'nd coming (of jesus).

Consider the theory that a creator causes history to unfold as the creator desires to suit the agenda of the creator. Is it unreasonable that such a creator would raise up a nation that will cause such an agenda to unfold. Those who don't think that god will bring wrath, vengeance and judgment to the earth have never read the christian bible.

The people of the earth like to believe that modern governments (democracies) do as their peoples desire. But it is a foolish thing to believe. The bible's description of rulers of the various nations is accurate, democracy is a fraudulent man-made idol.

we the americans do not approve of the United States and its policies. But we have no say in these matters. We are the people that stands idly by and watches all the achievements of our ancestors destroyed. Many people love to hate us. But these same peoples live in countries that likewise have governments that support the agenda of the United States. Our currency has great value in currency exchange markets because China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, UAE, Qutar, Saudi Arabia and many other nations conspire with the United States to make it so. The war spending is enabled by those who make that currency artificially valuable despite that we import far more than we export and pay for the difference every single day with borrowed money. German and French soldiers serve in the US wars. But all of these people of all of these nations blame us, the Americans, for these problems. While our people die in the wars even.

Jesus will return. and Americans will be there on the ground to welcome him when he arrives.
