A FORMER Fife coal miner who has lived in Zimbabwe for 51 years will this week fly back to Scotland – after the country's ruined economy left him penniless.
Fred Noble, 78, is one of the first five of many hundreds of impoverished elderly Britons in Zimbabwe who are scheduled for repatriation by the UK government. Mr Noble retired 13 years ago from his job with the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ),
formerly Rhodesian Railways.

But his pension and medical aid were withdrawn five years ago as Zimbabwe government policies, under president Robert Mugabe, triggered hyper-inflation now running at hundreds of millions per cent.

His blue-chip investment portfolio, which he built after he and his wife left Scotland in 1958 with just £100, also evaporated as a consequence of Mr Mugabe's economic and political mismanagement.

Under pressure by the Ex-Services League and other organisations, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office decided three months ago to repatriate more than 750 elderly British passport holders who could no longer survive because their pensions, savings and investments had been wiped out by Mr Mugabe's policies.

Mr Noble, widowed four years ago and with no children, was the second to apply at the British Embassy in Harare, the Zimbabwe capital, after the repatriation decision was quietly spread among the British community.

"I have done more good than wrong," he said as he prepared to leave his one-roomed cottage in Harare, provided by an ex- servicemen's organisation. "I helped more people than helped me and I deserve a Christian burial.

"We didn't do anything wrong. We paid taxes, invested for our old age."

He said that when his pension and investments dissolved his wife told him: "All this place has is sunshine. We are wasting our lives here."

Most of the elderly whites have no relatives left, or their children have quit Zimbabwe to escape the financial chaos and violence of the past decade.

The public health system has collapsed and private healthcare is unaffordable to all but the very rich and corrupt.

The final collapse of Mr Noble's dwindling wealth came when he fell ill and he had to go into a private hospital, the fees for which made him a pauper.

"I had to sell my flat," he said. "One day you are very well-off, and the next day you are a poor man."

Mr Noble quit work in Fife, after training as a fitter at the National Coal Board's workshops in Cowdenbeath, out of fear of redundancies in the pits.

He said: "I don't want to get ill again in Zimbabwe. They don't want some old white in the public hospitals in the (black] township moaning."

The only possessions Mr Noble plans to take with him are the Bible his wife gave him, a book of Robert Burns poems and a collection of photographs.

He sold a battered 32-year-old pick-up truck and a TV set and gave away a treasured elephant-skin waistcoat and two pairs of "the best handmade Rhodesian shoes".

Unsure of where he will live in Britain under the repatriation scheme, Mr Noble added: "I am not a young man any more, and I am going home to die – that is how I look at it. I came to a beautiful country and I will remember it as that."

Mr Salmond has already written one letter to Mugabe.

Mind you, that wasn't to complain just to air his views on the all important issue of nuclear weapons.

Like those Zimbabweans who were begging for bread were interested.

Our Alex is more concerned about Trident Mr Noble to have anything to do with you.

BTW
Britain should look after Mr Noble.

God knows we spend enough on methadone, illegal immigrants, human rights court cases for illegal immigrants, private jets to fly terrorists home from Guantanamo Bay, etc.

The fact is, Fred took a punt when he left Scotland in 1958 in the twilight of the Empire. He clearly thought he could better himself and his wife out in Rhodesia. He had plenty of opportunities to bail out. He could have come home in 1965 when Smith declared UDI. Most people would certainly have come home in 1970 when the civil war broke out. Only the really short sighted would not have come home in 1980 when the Mad Bob Mugabe won his famous "democratic" election (one man, one vote, once). He is fortunate to be allowed to return to an NHS and social services which he did not support through most of his working life

This is truly uplifting article which shows that there is still some compassion in the world. Sure Fred took a punt when he left Scotland but now he needs help and is going to get it from the land of his birth. Lots of younger people have managed to flee Mugabe but at the age of 78 and with no funds left what would become of him? I have met many people who have managed to get to Australia and have heard so many stories of whites being murdered in their own homes or having violent deaths. It is so good to know that Britain is making it possible for these elderly people to return to safety for their last years.

#2 John, " He is fortunate to be allowed to return to an NHS and social services which he did not support through most of his working life".

At least he was born and bred here, unlike a lot of folks who weren't and are still reaping those NHS and Social Services benefits. If we can give to them I don't see why we can't extend it to him, doesn't matter how long he's been away he's still one of ours and the position he now finds himself in is not entirely his fault. Most of the fault lays with an incompetent dictorial government who couldn't run a raffle never mind a country.

No2 And No3

Typical white people comments. One set of rules for white people and a different set for nonwhites.
Two standards.
Rule One. Nonwhite people can live in white countries but whites cannot live in nonwhite countries. You would never say that nonwhites are "lucky" to get the health care, education, infrastructure, welfare, rule of law,in a white country that they have not contributed to yet.

To a non-white, the level of self-loathing in the Scotsmans comments are incredible.

What on earth are you on about??????????

Who made this a race issue????????????

Where in any of these posts does it mention rules for whites and non whites?

By the way, since this is a majority 'white' country then it seems logical that most post in the Scotsman would be 'typical white comments'.

All you have done is make a public idiot of yourself.

you are correct in your criticisms of posters 2&3, today in the UK the political attitude and the general public attitude towards white people who live or have lived in Africa is they are wrong and ran away because of a racist attitude, clearly not the case here! but the lack of compassion by these posters proves your point,as for poster 7 he has missed your point completely.

From one corrupt and incompetent regime to another. Aye welcome home right

you imply that they are the same! but we can all live under Brown! black and white can`t say the same for Zimbabwe can we? Brown might be corrupt but he not a murdering thug like Mugabe is he? you must be some what confused to get them mixed up, or simply have the wrong idea about things!

A ruined economy and rampant political corruption.

Doesn't Zimbabwe make you think of somewhere a bit closer to home but without the sunshine?

Too right it does and we should not forget that Zimbabwe was once one of the most prosperous states in Africa.

Time to send a message to Westmidden this Thursday

A sad story indeed, the poor man must be devastated.

Africa is an enigma to most, but to those who understand the continent, she is what she is!

Take the Massai warriors for instance - A successful tribe who have thrived for over a thousand years. They are doctors of the land, pharmacists, dieticians, hunters and trackers, they possess a multitude of talents and are vastly experienced tribes people. However, note that in 1000 years they have not progressed, they still do things today as they were done 1000 years ago by the ancestors.
Of course there is nothing wrong with that, but such a system will not progress to cars, planes, trains and moon landings.
Mugabe is African and so whilst he may wear a suit and a tie, he is still an Africa and therefore incapable of running a nation in the manner that one would expect. Again there is nothing wrong with him being African and being tribal, but if that is the case then he must give up the cars, the palace, the electricity, the computers etc - Seems that African leaders don't like the white man, yet cannot do without his riches.
Africa is a place where progress will never happen, doomed she will toil and sweat all her days!

#2 You sound like a typical leftist, if so you and your ilk should be ashamed of yourselves for supporting thugs like Mugabe, if zimbabwe was still Rhodesia, and ruled by whites, no doubt it would still be the breadbasket of Africa, and a safe place to live. And I'm willing to bet that the majority of it's people would trade the right to vote for full stomachs, medical care and a government which does not rule by main force.

i think nobody in zimbabwe holded a gun to those scotman s head to go to zimbabwe.Just like also they is nobody holding guns to those african whom a being racially abused everyday in EUROPE but they a still staying. So i want to say you should not blame zimbabweans for what has happened to your people cause it was their own will to be in Zimbabwe.

no one is blaming all Zimbabweans!just one in particular he`s called MUGABE! a racist if there ever was one, there is no Africans being made destitute in Scotland forcing them to return to Zimbabwe indeed many what to stay here and do.... why? because they are better treated here than in their own country, the difference is that this old man was forced out.

I can tell that your comment comes from a good place within, but I disagree with you.
White people are the most racially abused people on the planet because they are governed by political correctness like no other race.
Having pushed the boundaries of technology and every faculty known to man they have created a world that both black and white people can enjoy, yet they receive no thanks for it. All they get is African begging and moaning, what about us and when is our next hand out coming?
When you speak about African's who are being racially abused in Europe, dont forget about the billion within the continent that suffer the most awful existence at the hands of tyrants.
At least in Europe, black people have a chance to succeed because white governed societies offer a stability and a freedom unknown to people in Africa. Look at the amount of African footballers playing in Europe, why are they not playing in Africa?
Time and time again black nations fail only for white nations to come to their aid - and time and time again they receive no thanks.
So when it comes to African's, nobody is holding a gun to their heads and they can always go back to the dark continent.

The issue goes a lot, lot deeper than one may think. The UK (Privy Council) had the ultimate authority to block laws in Southern Rhodesia until about 1963. Southern Rhodesian governments implemented racist laws even more draconian than those of South Africa, in advance of those laws being promulgated in South Africa. Apartheid was rigidly enforced in Southern Rhodesia well before South Africa, and all the good land was stolen from blacks by clearcut transgressions of treaties, from the Rudd Concession of 1889 onwards. The UK didn't lift a finger to fight apartheid in Southern Rhodesia, and indeed even sponsored ex-servicemen to settle on previously black land in the country after the end of World War 2 - while sternly and hyper-hypocritically wagging a finger at whites in South Africa. This disgustingly two-faced policy inevitably led to the war in Rhodesia, and later events including the occupation of white farms by the war veterans - land was at the very centre of the Bush War, something that most whites failed to grasp. Since the UK government precipitated the collapse of Zimbabwe by failing to buy back the land for black Zimbabweans that it had illegally grabbed for the white settlers it had placed upon it, the UK owes the remaining handful of white expatriate Brits the right to repatriation and death with dignity.

That's right, to bad you couldn't have had a bit longer to steal and loot from the poor of Rhodesia and elsewhere.

Sad case, but it seems the difference is that Zim has no Welfare State to look after the destitute, and that is the crux of the matter here.

There is no difference between Mr Noble and the many people in the UK and US, etc who have lost their savings and investments over the years due to theft or mismanagement, and due to no fault of their own.

The difference is that in the UK and US there is a welfare system.

Mr Noble is blessed that he is a UK Citizen. Many Zimbabweans, and those in other countries just die.

Mr Noble

Rhodesia was a self governing British colony from the 12 September 1923 onwards, the privy council had no say in the making or preventing laws in Rhodesia! there was no apartheid in Rhodesia as you know it! its not even an English word it comes from the Afrikaans meaning "separateness" dreamed by a man called Dr Hendrik Verwoerd, the separation of the natives was standard procedure in the British Empire whether in Singapore (the famous Raffles springs to mind) or the Victoria Falls Hotel in Rhodesia, as for this myth that the whites stole all the land, with a little bit of research on your part you will discover that the Africans from the Masai in Kenya all the way down through Africa to the Zulu in South Africa are cattle men not farmers their entire culture, tradition, society are all based on cattle, further to your research a book by Dr Pieter Becker called " A TRIBAL IDENTITY" would be a valuable source of factual information.
In the mid 1970s the cattle population numbered 3,500,000 head most owned by Africans if the whites had stolen all the land where were the Africans keeping their cattle? another point you might wish to consider since all the stolen land has been stolen back by Mugabe why cant the now African farmers not turn Zimbabwe into the breadbasket it once was? do you think its possible that it might have something to do with the fact they are not farmers?

no consensus here, never will be. black and white, no middle ground. thats the essence of it. sure Africans enjoy equality, welfare access and all the gravy the western (white)world has on offer. no doubt built on the backs of African resources - yeah argue that all you want. the white owned farms in zim were mostly inherited land from grandparents that either got it free - pioneer column rewards or paid token prices. i always remember being taken aback at the sight of a homeless white person in the usa, never saw that in zim, ever! i remember white kids in school who were total idiots, who later were bosses and managers way above me even though far less qualified (like 2GCSE's). or trying to lease some land to farm from a white farmer whose farm was the size of scotland - he said no...and i suspect white arrogance in africa was rooted in the english citizenship they all enjoyed; they knew they could leave at any time...as much as i hate mugabe's destruction of the country i dont regret the whites recieving their comeuppance. and to those referring to the dark continent in a degrading way, my guess is that long after our time, like a century or 2, Africa will be the promised land. untouched and besmirched by corporations, polluted rivers and super crowded cities, extreme weather and extreme ideologies. China vs the US is round one. rising Asian tigers is round 2. and the increasing new minority(white) is round 3. heidi klum and seal is round 4. keep going, friend, keep going...

" sure Africans enjoy equality, welfare access and all the gravy the western (white)world has on offer. no doubt built on the backs of African

are you sure? lets take "equality" Africans can vote yes! but only for Mugabe how do equate this with a western(to use your words "White" ) democracy? all democratic countries reject this practice outright.
"Gravy" in Zimbabwe your out of touch! more than 2/3of the population are facing starvation millions have fled into South Africa,Botswana,Mozambique 75% unemployed the list just goes on and on.

" no doubt built on the backs of African " assuming this piece of wisdom is correct! could you explain why after removing the "white yoke" from around the necks of Africans in Zimbabwe the country has went down hill it would appear the entire nation has a back problem considering the state of the country it finds its self in.

"i always remember being taken aback at the sight of a homeless white person in the usa"

well homelessness is a problem in all societies black/white US /Britain/Zimbabwe etc today there is more homeless in Zimbabwe that at any time in history of a black or white government in Zimbabwe its a social problem not a racial one as you try in infer

"i remember white kids in school who were total idiots, who later were bosses and managers "

total idiots are not restricted to the white race,an African chap by the name of Mugabe finished is education in Ghana with his teachers diploma he went on to study and take further degrees in various Universities and eventually destroyed the once prosperous nation of Zimbabwe.

all this shows you can teach a man to read but that doesn`t make him a suitable minister of education

"or trying to lease some land to farm from a white farmer whose farm was the size of Scotland"

the size of Scotland? you exaggerate! the biggest game ranch in Rhodesia was the one that ran from Nuanetsi down parallel with the road to Beitbridge on the South
27

oder,

continue

South African border huge as it was! it and other game reserves/ranches are nowhere near the size of Scotland.
I asked a previous poster this question with 3.5 million cattle in the country most owned by Africans if they had no land were did the keep their cattle?

"they knew they could leave at any time"

people born in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe regardless of colour are citizens, you have no legitimate reason to say this other than your racist attitude towards whites
strange you are a guilty of the same crime you accuse the whites of.

"as much as i hate Mugabe's destruction of the country i don't regret the whites receiving their comeuppance"

the destruction of Zimbabwe is acceptable to you as long as you get the whites.. speak`s volume`s about you mate!

Quit yer yammerin' you lot. The man's not going to be in Scotland for long, most likely. The fact is he IS a Scotman who happened to have lived outside the country for decades. So what? He is likely as much, or perhaps even more, of a Scotman than the poor-excuse-for-a-Scotsman generation we are currently stuck with. Welcome back, Fred. I certainly hope your final years among us are as happy as they can be. It is an indisputable fact the left wing/communist revolution has totally destroyed Africa and as one who does have contact with Arficans in Zimbabwe I can tell you that most native black Africans no longer see their future as communist puppets and do wish for something more like the 'colonial' past ... when they could at least afford to eat!
