A NEW action plan to promote tourism in West Lothian has been drawn up after it emerged the industry was worth more than £30 million a year to the area.
The figures were revealed in a report from independent consultants, which also proposed a strategy to focus on the area's strengths.

These included promoting shopping in Livingston, the heritage of Linlithgow, development of cultural and sporting events and development of business tourism. The need for improvements to visitor information services were also highlighted.

West Lothian Council has now agreed to set up a new public/private partnership company to work with VisitScotland, West Lothian Tourism Forum and private organisations in the hotel, retail and heritage sectors.

Council leader Peter Johnston said: "Establishing common goals and pooling experience and resources will strengthen local tourism services."

Why on earth would anyone want to come to West Lothian on a holiday? To see what? Linlithgow palace? That would take 5 minutes. Shopping centres? Every large town in the UK has the same group of boring shops. All the other towns centres of Broxburn, Boness, Bathgate, Whitburn and historic Linlithgow are full of charity shops or boarded up places for rent. So well done WLC. Cooncil of the year 2006 for riping the heart and soul out of all these towns. "Cooncil of the year my erse" said a spokesperson

I am planning a trip to Scotland next year to tour the country and yes I want to visit Linlithgow Palace. I can certainly spend more than 5 minutes there. My daughter did the same in 1998 and loved every minute of it. Please, I don't know where you are from, but you needn't put down Scotland this way. It is a fair and lovely country steeped in history. And yes, I will be visiting the shops as well.
