A FIREFIGHTER filmed spinning around in a tumble dryer as colleagues collapsed in laughter was yesterday suspended from his job.
Andy Bruce, 33, and three other firemen have been told not to come to work after the mobile phone video footage of the prank was e-mailed to the head of Greater Manchester Fire Service.

Mr Bruce, of Bury, Greater Manchester, is seen climbing into
an industrial drying machine at Blackley fire station. With colleagues egging him on, clothes are packed inside to protect him from the metal sides.

As the door is closed, the dryer is turned on with the fireman tumbling over inside while his workmates laugh hysterically.

When the door is opened the unsteady firefighter climbs out and complains of feeling dizzy.

But the prank has now landed the firemen a suspension from their job, after the footage was sent to county fire officer Barry Dixon.

The fire service launched an investigation after details emerged in the media last week. The men will face a disciplinary hearing.

Senior officers condemned the incident as foolish and dangerous and said it was bringing the reputation of the service into disrepute.

Deputy County Fire Officer Tony Proctor said: "Following our interviews with the four firefighters involved, due to the serious nature of the incident, the decision has been taken to suspend them until the outcome of the disciplinary hearing."

Mr Bruce, who has been a firefighter for four years, has apologised to the brigade for his behaviour.

Has it come to this, when a group of men can't have a harmless laugh amongst themselves? God knows, with what they have to attend to, they should be allowed some release, even if it is at their place of work.

And shame on the boring killjoy who forwarded the video!

And what would have happened if that crew has had a callout while he was in the tumble dryer? Or immediately after he climbed out and complained of feeling dizzy?

And what would happen if a child had seen the video and repeated the prank?

I expect a fire crew to be alert and reactive - not stumbling around the station in a state of dizziness!

I agree that everyone needs some release at work - but I don't agree that this example was harmless. It was stupid and dangerous! He doesn't deserve anything harsher than a severe telling though.

We've just had a nutter convicted here for putting a toddler in a tumble drier for about a minute. The child ended up with terrible burns. If the firemen's boss got the footage of them having fun, so could others.

It looks to me like the the head of Greater Manchester Fire Service has a lot of time on his hands.

Little men who often manage to find themselves a niche as career administrators are always under the impression that they will shine by being harsh.

It usually, as in this case, only goes to broadcast to the world how small they are.

And remember : "if you do not use the softener you will always sit in harshness."

Is having a hotel for dogs a barking idea or not to be sniffed at?
Yes, they’re only dogs, they won’t appreciate it
No, pets deserve pampering too
If people are silly enough to pay for it that’s their problem
