TARA the Labrador cross liked nothing better than eating up the biscuit crumbs dropped by her owner's children - until the day disaster struck.
The mischievous pooch sniffed out the remains of some shortbread which had fallen on to a paper shredder in her owner's Craigentinny home.

But as she stuck her tongue to retrieve the tasty tit bit she activated the machine, trapping her tongue wh
ich left her howling in agony.

Her frantic yelping alerted owner Linda Brown who ran across the living room of her home in Loganlea Road to find her pet bleeding badly.

The injured dog had to undergo two operations on her mouth, and had to have one-third of her badly-damaged tongue amputated.

Mother-of-three Miss Brown said the 12-year-old Labrador cross was lucky not to have died.

She said: "It was horrific. It will haunt me for ever more.

"I think the children were eating shortbread and they must have dropped some of it on the shredder. The next thing I heard was the dog screaming. I came running across the room.

"We couldn't get near her at first, she was squealing and moving her head in sheer panic. I had to grab her and pull the shredder off her tongue. The blood was unbearable.

"We thought maybe she'd just shredded the tip of her tongue, then the younger one said what we thought was congealed blood was actually part of her tongue."

Linda, 43, and her nine-year-old daughter Cody stayed up with the dog all night on Thursday, November 23, keeping her calm.

The dog was taken to Abercorn Veterinary Clinic in Portobello first thing on Friday morning.

Vet Jim Penman operated on Tara twice. He said: "I've never seen anything like that before. It's a freak accident.

"The dog's tongue looked like something that had come through a pasta machine - just strings hanging down.

"It's lost about a third of its tongue. We had to amputate it."

"The dog has coped remarkably well. The major blood vessels run along the tongue in the same direction as the cuts, and fortunately they escaped injuries. The big problem will be difficulty drinking, but it's managing to drink water out of a bucket."

He said most accidents in the home involved pets swallowing objects.

He said: "We've seen animals chewing electric cables or swallowing rubber bands. I've seen animals who've swallowed the centres of corn-on-the-cobs and they've had to be operated on."

Linda, a self-employed wages clerk who works from home, said Tara was now recovering well.

She said: "She's back to normal now, eating and drinking again. She's always been greedy, but this time it nearly killed her.

"This has highlighted the danger for any animal. So many people have shredders at home now and they never think about this. She could easily have died from the shock."

She bought the shredder two years ago from Woolworths, but said the dog had never gone near it before.

She said she often left it on, as it has to be switched off at the wall. It has a finger guard on it to prevent accidents.

A spokeswoman for Woolworths said they had no other reports of accidents with them, but they no longer sold this type of shredder.

She said: "All the shredders we currently sell feature an on/off switch as well as numerous safety warnings. Woolworths takes the health and safety of its customers very seriously."

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals warned pet owners to be particularly careful over the festive period.

She said: "I've never heard of anything like this before, but we do see a lot of accidents involving food. We once saw a dog that ate a whole Christmas cake, and raisins are toxic to dogs.

"At this time of year you should be extra careful - if you have flowers in your home they can kill your cat, and if you give your dog chocolate, make sure it's doggy chocolate."

Not a good week for dogs in Edinburgh.

2

Hmmmm,

That's horrible. I hope she recovers.

3

A Leither,

(1) Most shredders have an on/off switch - use it
(2) Never leave it plugged in and unattended anyway (especially with kids in the house)

Poor dog. Careless owner.

4

Nisbet,

06/12/2006 12:29:53

Poor Tara. That's horrific!

My advice to her owners is to ditch the shredder. (You probably have done so already.)
If you are worried about security regarding things like bank statements etc, in your trash, just put a couple of dog...sh..erm...cr..erm droppings in the bag with them and you'll be quite safe..

5

Proximo,

06/12/2006 12:39:29

Excellent H+S advice there 'A Leither' although I suspect that as everyone who reads your advice has also just read about a dog getting it's tounge shredded, it may be unecessary...

I notice the dumb beast concerned was a Labrador cross. Correct me if I'm wrong, but was not poor Saffy. 'kidnapped' outside Bar Napoli yesterday also a Labrador cross? Coincidence, or what?

Nisbet, why use dog droppings? Simply take a poly bag with you each time you go to the bathroom, and hey presto, a ready supply of bags to dispose of bank statememnts, bills etc. As your bills probably arrive monthly, and assuming you are fit and healthy, you should have more than enough bags and they can be stored in the cupboard under the stairs until required...

6

Nisbet,

06/12/2006 12:46:52

Good thinking Proximo. I'll let my neighbours in in the act, by posting free samples through there doors.

Why bother reporting on something like this?report on some real news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

8

Prin the Dissolving Donkey,

06/12/2006 13:25:01

Make sure you put seventeen exclamation points at the end of your sentence, there, Angus. Because if you use only sixteen, or four - or one - we wouldn't know just how outraged you are.

9

chain,

06/12/2006 13:28:37

exactly - this has to be THE most useless piece of news ever. Although I do find it quite funny.

What next?

CAT GETS A NASTY PAPER CUT

BUDGIE HURTS WING IN STAPLE GUN TRAGEDY

GERBIL GLUED TO CAGE BY PRIT STICK

what a joke of a news story.

10

ps.

anyone that counts exclamation marks (not points) needs to get out a bit more.

13

Poor dog: imagine waking up to the knowledge that you'll never lick another a bag o' balls again? Gutted.

14

Paul Voltaire,

www.paulvoltaire.spaces.live.com 06/12/2006 13:40:40

If the dog had been a male one it would no doubt have been happy licking its own testicles.
The bitches are at a disadvantage in this regard.

Seriously, the owner is 100% to blame and will have some hefty vets bills as well as one very miffed pet to contend with.

15

Nisbet,

06/12/2006 13:41:11

Excuse me there were actually 25 in post #7 !!
(I kindly used two, so to make counting easier).

16

Jasmin,

06/12/2006 13:47:41

Look, a sentence no more needs an exclamation mark than a man's chest needs a gold medallion. Enough now.

17

Prin the Dissolving Donkey,

Except when you are outraged!

Sorry, make that outraged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Poor dog, wot a heartless lot you are! Imagine how you'd feel wi no tongue? then again you cant reach your bits anyways (bit of jealousy there eh) On a serious note, poor dog! Your rite leither, they come with on/off switches and are easily disconnected from the wall when not in use, which should have been done here, with kids in the house anyways. The OWNER is 100% to blame for this! no iffs no buts! Why try to pull shredder from dog's mouth, was it on or off? if on, put it off jeez! Does common sense no come into it? The yelps comin from mutt woulda been horrendous.. Cant believe how bliddy stupid owner was leavin it in harm's way grrr. Hope she has some hefty vets bills Paul, teach her a lesson in safety! Sorry, but hate the thought of animals suffering needlessly, in this case it was defo NEEDLESS!

This is Astro Turf for Reporting Scatland , and thats the way the cookie crumbles.

22

àstro türf,

Can you imagine if this is the same dog ?

Left outside Bar Napoli for hours on end while the owners snaff away at Pizza.

Rescued , off to nice new warm home, only to see the owner head out to scotmid for some tasty shortbread. Owner falls asleep after a hard days shredding, wee Saffy sniffs the shortbread, loses tongue , owners and left over pizza in one day.

Its a dogs life.

If Lindas' nine-year-old daughter Cody had put her fingers in the shredder I'm sure that Linda would have rushed her to A&E and yes the dog would also have stayed up with the child all night.

Linda - take note it's all your fault.

This photo is a very good photo. The dog looks slightly worried.
The younger of the two women is smiling.

There are two people behind the blonde lady -
but there is no way of saying if they are women or men.

If you were a true good dog owner you would have had that dog at the emergency vet on the Thursday night. The real story should be irresponsible dog owner causes unnecessary length of pain for dog.

No.76, along with oh-so-many of the other 'contributors' here, your comments are really constructive.

Would any parent leave their wee kid with an injury such as this? I would suspect that they would be up at the RIE waiting the predicatable several hours to see a Doctor who has been on a 14 hour Pro-Plus fuelled shift.

I am surprised that this buffoon is not trying to sue the makers of the shredder cause it didn't have a 'Caution: Please keep your Pet away from this machine' placed on it.

This woman has the audacity to say "This has highlighted the danger for any animal". NO, HAVING YOU AS AN OWNER IS DANGEROUS ENOUGH!

Get the RSPCA onto her for being really, really stupid.

Rant over!

77

fluffcat,

#77 your dig at A&E is uncalled for the docs ALL work 8 hour shifts , the nursing staff 12 1/2 hrs. The time you wait to be seen depends on a few things ....like is there a major trauma that the dept is concentrating on , you know like the shoootings , the big road traffic accidents etc , they all go there they all take time.
Many people who attend the dept actually help to increase your wait as they are inappropriate attenders who should be at GP or the chemist. Always ask youself am I an emergency ??? more often than not the answer will be no !!!!!!
To the rest I agree this woman was cruel to leave her dog until morning to see a vet , the tongue is a very vascular area and the dog could easily have bled to death.
A quiet word from an rspca officer is in order methinks.Shame on you dog owner ,,,,,you really shouldnt have pets.
