Sources claimed Thus had submitted a bid with a view to acquiring the company by March.
Such a deal would fit in with Thus chief executive Bill Allan's acquisitive strategy.

Oakley Capital is also understood to have made an approach.

NORTHERN TALK

VIRGIN Money, the consortium led by Sir Richard Branson, is in talks with banks this weekend as it seeks backing for its plan to take over Northern Rock. Speculation is growing that Virgin and its rival Olivant are finding it tough to raise the necessary finance.

A report by Goldman Sachs on whether nationalisation is the best option will be presented to the Treasury by mid-January and Chancellor Alistair Darling has indicated that a decision on the bank will be made within six weeks.

BONUS BLOW

THE City bonus season is expected to get off to a poor start this month, with bankers at some of the biggest US institutions bracing themselves for disappointing figures. Insiders say that while some bankers face big cuts, others have been told they will be lucky to hold on to their jobs. Overall, City bonuses are expected to be down 16%.
