Prince Harry at war: An interview with the Prince as he carries out his day to day duties in Helmand province, Afghanistan

PRINCE Harry is to be withdrawn from Afghanistan after his security was compromised by international media, the Ministry of Defence confirmed today.
The 23-year-old Household Cavalry officer has been secretly fighting the Taliban in Helmand Province as a battlefield air controller and Spartan light tank commander for the past 10 weeks.

But he is now set to be flown home to the UK after the collapse of a news blackout deal.

The move, which will be a bitter blow to the prince, came after foreign websites leaked details of his deployment.

The leaks finally forced the breakdown last night of an agreement by the British media not to report the fact that Harry was in Afghanistan.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said: "Following a detailed assessment of the risks by the operational chain of command, the decision has been taken by Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, Chief of Defence Staff, in consultation with General Sir Richard Dannatt, Chief of the General Staff, to withdraw Prince Harry from Afghanistan immediately.

"This decision has been taken primarily on the basis that the worldwide media coverage of Prince Harry in Afghanistan could impact on the security of those who are deployed there, as well as the risks to him as an individual soldier."

It was General Dannatt who faced the task last year of announcing a U-turn on plans to deploy the Prince – a Cornet, or Second Lieutenant, in the Blues and Royals – to Iraq.

Intelligence picked up a series of specific threats to Harry and his comrades in Iraq after details of his planned deployment were announced and received widespread publicity.

It is feared the revelation that the third in line to the throne has been fighting in Helmand would increase the tempo of attacks on British forces by the Taliban.

No details are available on when he will arrive home.

The MoD statement added: "The decision by elements of the foreign media to report Prince Harry's presence in Afghanistan without any consultation with the Ministry of Defence is regrettable.

"However, this was a circumstance that we have always been aware of and one for which we have had contingency plans in place.

"Whilst it had been intended that Prince Harry should return in a matter of weeks with the remainder of the Household Cavalry Regiment Battlegroup, the situation has now clearly changed."

During his foreshortened tour Harry enjoyed a level of anonymity he has never experienced as a member of the Royal Family.

In one interview with pooled media he commented: "I think this is about as normal as I'm ever going to get."

During a posting to Garmsir, the southernmost part of Helmand under allied control, the Prince was able to go on patrol and mix with locals who had no idea he was a senior member of the Royal Family.

His work as a "JTAC" (Joint Terminal Attack Controller) involved carrying out detailed aerial surveillance behind Taliban lines and even calling in bomb strikes on confirmed enemy bunker positions.

But details of his deployment were broadcast around the world last night after the deal with the media broke down following reports on foreign websites.

The development will be a major blow to Harry who considered leaving the Army last spring after the cancellation of his Iraq tour.

Speaking just last week Harry told of his frustration with the media spotlight in the UK and his preference for the frontline compared to being in barracks at Windsor.

"I don't want to sit around in Windsor," he said.

"But I generally don't like England that much and, you know, it's nice to be away from all the press and the papers and all the general ***** that they write."

He also expressed hopes of being able to return to Afghanistan as early as this summer but that possibility is now likely to be in doubt.

He also conceded that he could be a "top target" for homegrown jihadists in the UK now that he is known to have been fighting the Taliban.

"Once this... comes out there'll probably be every single person, every single person that supports them will be trying to slot me," he said.

That sounds painful, whereabouts in your body is your Afghanistan?

What a pathetic publicity stunt. No doubt he'll get a medal to wear on his Chocolate Box soldier's uniform.

Whatever happened to the - "Good Old Days", when Kings, Queens, Princes, and even (possibly) Princesses- actually fought on the front-lines just like everbody else?

And what a terrific morale dumper to the 1k's of British (and of course - Scottish!) troops who are over there on the front lines, nay- to the troops in general!

Why did they let him go in the first place, when this was inevitable?...he should have stayed at home and found employment if he is bored..the lad will have known that this would have been for a very short period..mind you...at least he still has his head...

Kimba the original title for this piece was:

"Prince Harry 'about to be pulled of Afghanistan'"

hence my comment, what was disgraceful about that?

Do get a grip.

9

Pazuzu,

29/02/2008 12:43:11
Ridiculous!

He should stay and do his bit like the rest of our boys and girls there.

Strange how the public were "told" a while back that he was going to Afghanistan, then after two months or so it's "leaked" that he was there.

In other words, token gesture.

Do your bit son, unlike the rest of the Royals who take more than they give.

Only then, and only, then - can he get a chocolate medal.

End of.
10

Arrow,

he volunteered, he is there and his uniform did not look very chocolate box to me. it is not a publicity stunt to get shot at.

i did not see any of Blair's weans putting thier names forward to fight in their Dad's war. but then they are too busy making money and perish the thought that any politician's son gets hurt in these "conflicts".

i wonder how many of the great and good in the USA have their sons and daughters volunteers. i do not know of many Senators, Reperesntatives, State Governors, Captains of Industry, Supreme Court Judges whose offspring are up the sharp end (any guesses?)in time of war (and the Yanks are always bumping their gums that this is war)

there is an expression used in the states Chickenhawk and is often used in the context of someone who has been in the military in time of war but make efforts to steer clear of combat, such as George W. Bush's military records showing he wrote "do not volunteer" on being requested if he would consider a tour of duty in Vietnam. his old man was a pilot in WW2 and was shot down i believe.

so good luck to 2nd Lieutenant Wales and i hope that he and his comrades return safely.

Harry is a known and high status target: that endangers all around him. They have enough to do already. Getting him out is sound policy; as is getting all our boys out of Muslim countries. Wars against fanatics are unwinnable as long as the media are watching.

I bet Harry is extremely annoyed the story broke - he's a soldier and he wants to do his job.

As for why he's being pulled out now it's public - yes he could be in more danger, but more to the point so would everyone around him simply by being near him.

I noticed that at least Kimba and perhaps others here are stating that American sources reported the Prince's tour in Afghanistan. Here's the real deal:

It appears it was a mistake by an Australian women's magazine that was clueless about the circumstances surrounding Prince Harry's being sent to a war zone that led to the chain of events that has resulted in His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales being yanked out of Afghanistan by British military officials."

Got it? An Australian womens magazine.

#105 prince andrew was given light duty compared to others delivering supplies and adequately protected and if you are as rich as any of the ruling elite it is never as little as a pound pal more like millions to billions. the regular troops got one pound per day terrain money in the falklands and you cannot get better than that bloody greedy. i got between 45-55 French francs during the eighties for peace time exercises.

I don't understand the criticism of the Prince. He's a soldier and a real one. He is where he's supposed to be, leading men in combat. This is one of the wealthiest and best connected young men on earth and he could be living it up in luxury if he wanted to. Where was he? Afghanistan, that's where. How many reader would trade the place they are reading this for military tour of Afghanistan? This guy can't win, if he goes he's a showboat putting his comrades lives in peril, if he stays home he's another royal softy living off his royal allowance and sitting on his royal butt. Henry may be young, but he's a man.

the Afghanistan war is politics politics is money, the ninety nine year lease of hong kong from china was won by the royal navy and marine and other expeditionary forces for control of the opium trade routes and the opium and money it generated. even princes Diana's association with dodi was politics and she went to Afghanistan remember the cannabis at Khyber pass was that not part of the war for hearts and minds and any addictive substance that could generate wealth. if you note the traders were few maybe they had missed the shipment for that day and all the others went home rubbing their hands and you lot of your senses.

if any of you feel they should not be their or even that they are doing well, oliver north said to me and others that we have the means to destroy the drugs at their source. agent orange destroyed mass amounts of forest in Vietnam to deny the Vietnamese their camouflage. so why don't you go kill all the drug barons here and abroad and seek to implement compulsive detox and force all institutions who deal in mind altering substances not to allow people into their pubs and clubs on benefits. those who use drugs for pleasurable persuites should be detoxed also by denying them their DLA. MANY PEOPLE I KNOW WHO ARE ON DLA ARE JUNKIES AND NOT EVEN BEING FORCED TO TAKE MEDICINES FORCIBLY AND UNKNOWINGLY AS I WAS AS A CHILD AND ADULT FOR THE CHILD SEX DRUGS AND PAY ROLLS OF THOSE LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT STATE OF MIND ON THE NHS AND BIG PHARMA LAW ABIDING SOCIETIES.

He obviously wasn't "secretly" fighting out there. If the army high command had seriously meant his presence in Afghanistan to be covert, what were they doing inviting the press along and saying "keep this a secret?" NEVER tell a member of the press anything you wish to be kept a secret. It is THEIR JOB TO TELL the world (or however many will listen) what they learn. That's the way they make money to live to eat drink and be merry. The men around him who knew who he was should have been under strict orders to keep their mouths shut and that's it. Not so much end of story, as no beginning of story.

"I generally don't like England that much and, you know, it's nice to be away from all the press and the papers and all the general ***** that they write."
Interesting... if this had been ANY member of the SNP saying that the unionist press, the one's Harry refers to as "shi*e", would have been frothing in their condemnation. Instead their deference to the English establishment and monarchy is astounding. Not only did they completely fail to adhere to the highest standards of journalism by failing to report his deployment, a consiracy which would have made PRAVDA proud, but even when the Prince they are "protecting" by their silence calls them crap they can't help but fawn over his antics. How come if he is part of the best trained army in the world that he is being withdrawn because of potential mass attacks by the Talaban. I thought "we" were meant to be winning this war and the Talaban were just a rag tag outfit of drug running mountain bandits. I think the silence over Harry's deployment is not the only silence which is prevailing in terms of Britain/England's foreign policy objectives and activity.

Who gives a flyingshite about a drunken whoring English degenerate Prince

The whole thing has been stage managed but the dim brained fuks have now placed the ginger headed wee bar steward in even more danger.

He should go back to what his hun family do best sponging of the British tax payer and living like leeches

I would keep Queen Lizzie on the payroll until she pops her clogs and then tell the rest of the spongers to get a job Scotland has enough English spongers sooking at her gravy as they have for centuries

They are all parasites worse than benefits scroungers and cost us a damn site more

The only thing we want from England is Berwick and we will soon take her back as the people know who their true friends are
