BARACK Obama stepped to the brink of victory in the Democratic presidential race today, defeating Hillary Clinton in the Oregon primary and moving within 100 delegates of the total needed to claim the prize at the party convention this summer.
"You have put us within reach of the Democratic nomination," he told cheering supporters in Iowa, the state that launched him, a first-term senator from Illinois, on his improbable path to victory last January.

With about 30% of the votes counted
in Oregon's unique mail-in primary, Mr Obama was gaining a 60% share to 40% for Clinton.

Earlier, Mr Obama lost Kentucky to Mrs Clinton by a lopsided margin of 65% to 30%.

Mr Obama said the night's contests would give him a majority of the delegates elected in all 56 primaries and caucuses combined – as distinct from nearly 800 superdelegates, party leaders and elected officials, who hold the balance of power at the convention.

"We still have work to do to in the remaining states, where we will compete for every delegate available," he said. "But tonight, I want to thank you for everything you have done to take us this far – farther than anyone predicted, expected or even believed possible."

Mr Obama has already turned his attention to the general election campaign against Republican John McCain.

Democratic party officials said discussions were under way to send Paul Tewes, a top Obama campaign aide, to the Democratic National Committee to oversee operations for the autumn campaign.

Mr Obama lavished praise on Mrs Clinton, his rival in a race unlike any other, and accused Mr McCain of a campaign run by lobbyists.

"You are Democrats who are tired of being divided, Republicans who no longer recognise the party that runs Washington, independents who are hungry for change," he said, speaking to a crowd on the grounds of the Iowa Capitol in Des Moines as well as the millions around the country who will elect the nation's 44th president in November.

Mrs Clinton countered with a win in Kentucky, a victory with scant political value in a race moving inexorably in Mr Obama's direction.

The former first lady vowed to remain in the race, telling supporters, "I'm more than determined than ever to see that every vote is cast and every ballot is counted.

In a fresh sign that their race was coming to an end, Mrs Clinton and Mr Obama praised one another and pledged a united party for the general election.

"While we continue to go toe-to-toe for this nomination, we do see eye-to-eye when it comes to uniting our party to elect a Democratic president this fall," said Mrs Clinton, whose supporters Mr Obama will need if he is to end eight years of Republican rule in the White House.

Mrs Clinton won at least 37 delegates in the two states and Mr Obama won at least 23, according to an analysis of election returns.

All the Kentucky delegates were awarded, but there were still 43 to be allocated in Oregon, and Mr Obama was in line for many of them.

He had 1,940 delegates overall, out of 2026 needed for the nomination. Mrs Clinton had 1,759 according the latest tally by the AP.

The reality is that Israel is a puppet of America in the Middle east. Though I agree Israel would not want America to pull out, the body bags returning from Iraq will determine a different outcome. Watch this space.

It's not a done deal, althought the Obama campaign is knocking itself out trying to get you to believe it is.

This will go to the Convention in August and there is a fair chance that Hillary Clinton will be the nominee. She is by far the stronger candidate against John McCain.

Why does she not give up now. She must know he is going to win, for the sake of her party she should retire and get behind the people's choice.
I dont think there is any searching for WMDs going on. They knew from the outset that there were none there.

The WMD reference was a joke as was the the original reason given for going into Iraq.
Obama will get the nomination and go on to become President. Who needs another Clinton in the White House.

#6 Number six, Why should she give up. Obama has not reach the majority yet. Also it keeps her name in the lime light and if Obama wins the general election and beomes another Jimmy Carter, she have the vast majority of the democrat voters in 2012.

#8 Number six, Remember sarcasim because it will either point out an experience or put a smile on your face.

Question: If either win, should I fly the UN flag or some socilaist flag instead of our national flag?

#6,

Why should she give up? She IS "the people's choice". She has more popular votes than Obama. The number of pledged delegates is the deciding number and neither candidate will have the number required at the conclusion of the primaries. The assigning of pledged delegates is manipulated in many ways and is not really representative of the votes of the people. Frankly, the Democratic Party should do away with delegates altogether in the next presidential election cycle, IMO. The party nominee should be decided by direct vote. The continued involvement of delegates allows the DNC to determine the outcome. For instance this year, the DNC assigned additonal delegates to states like N. Carolina where it was almost certain that Obama would win. No additional delegates were assigned to states that Clinton won though. So who should pick the nominee? The voters who are the members of the Party or the DNC? Because of their tweaking this year, including the exclusion of Florida and Michigan -two states won by Hillary Clinton, and allowing independents and cross-over Republicans to vote in primaries and caucuses (something strongly promoted by the Obama campaign), the final decision will be the DNC's via the superdelegates.

first off, while not a hillary supporter, I've grown to admire her fight and understand her arguments...

why does she not give up? to accept her answer to that question you have to understand the PURPOSE of these primaries... and some inherent flaws with how the DNC runs them

1) lets start with the flaws,
1A) the DNC primaries are of two types, straight votes and caucases... Hillary has won a significant majority of the "straight vote" states... BO has won an even bigger percentage of Caucases... the significant difference here is that caucases are like a big tea party where everybody campaigns and votes right out in the open... the first problem with caucases is intimidation... the second problem with caucases is that "caucases" are NOT how the election in the fall will be run... and the DNC screams about voter intimidation?

1b) the second problem with the DNC method is they use "proportional representation"... meaning if you win 60% of the vote, you get 60% of the delegates for a state... that sounds fair and all, but in the fall the electoral college is "winner take all" state by state...

lets say Hillary wins NewYork by a 57-40% margin... NY being a BIG state has 232 delegates hillary gets 136 delegates... BO 96
with proportional representation hillary leads by 40..
"winner takes all" (like it will be in the fall)... hillary leads by 232

throw in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Alaska, Nevada and Kansas... all states where BO won... but will most likely NOT win in the fall
with proportional representation BO takes those states 82-41 and now BO LEADS the delegate count by 178-177
Winner takes all, like it will be in the fall (and how the GOP runs its primaries)... hillary leads 232-123...

2) the purpose of these primaries is for the parties (GOP & DNC) to select a candidate who they believe will most likely win in the fall... given the problems with BOs support, it is not at all clear that BO can win in the fall...

THAT i

Should Clinton dig her heels in and drag this out. The Democrats will get slaughtered in the presidential race in Nov.

Under the rules Obama has this thing wrapped up. Demorats in Michigan and Florida screwed this up big time by moving their primaries ahead.

In Kentucky something like 75% of those who voted for Clinton stated they would not vote for Obama in a presidential election. McCain in a landslide. The republicans cannot believe their good fortune. As this presidential election should have been a cake walk for them.

All the best.

Well actually, under the rules, Obama does NOT have "this thing wrapped up". He just want you to think he does.

#13, Mike

Excellent points. I'll add a #3 to your caucus negatives: the caucuses are held at a specific time and can lst for hours. Many voters are either unable to attend at the time or could not stay around for several hours. Only a very small percentage of the registered Democrats in a state actually participate in the caucus.

Ron Paul 21/05/2008 18:25:38
Working Americans like lower taxes. So do I. Lower taxes benefit all of us, creating jobs and allowing us to make more decisions for ourselves about our lives.

Whether a tax cut reduces a single mother’s payroll taxes by $40 a month or allows a business owner to save thousands in capital gains taxes and hire more employees, that tax cut is a good thing. Lower taxes allow more spending, saving, and investing which helps the economy — that means all of us.

Real conservatives have always supported low taxes and low spending.

But today, too many politicians and lobbyists are spending America into ruin. We are nine trillion dollars in debt as a nation. Our mounting government debt endangers the financial future of our children and grandchildren. If we don’t cut spending now, higher taxes and economic disaster will be in their future — and yours.

In addition, the Federal Reserve, our central bank, fosters runaway debt by increasing the money supply — making each dollar in your pocket worth less. The Fed is a private bank run by unelected officials who are not required to be open or accountable to “we the people.”

Worse, our economy and our very independence as a nation is increasingly in the hands of foreign governments such as China and Saudi Arabia, because their central banks also finance our runaway spending.

We cannot continue to allow private banks, wasteful agencies, lobbyists, corporations on welfare, and governments collecting foreign aid to dictate the size of our ballooning budget. We need a new method to prioritize our spending. It’s called the Constitution of the United States.

I don't blame Sandi for supporting Hilary Clinton. and I don't blame Hilary Clinton for staying in the race either. But yesterday a Gallup poll came out that indicates that Obama has pulled ahead of Clinton very decisively in national polling.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/107407/Obama-Surge-Fairly-BroadBased.aspx

Polls also indicate that either Clinton or Obama would beat McCain easily. McCain's disadvantage is that he's a republican & George Bush has damaged the Republicans' image enormously.

#16 Sandi. You are correct. While still breathing, Clinton is on life support.

Should she manipulate her way to the nomination ( what odds are the bookies giving on that?)Short of a Mccain disaster the Republicans will be in the White house come November.

The Clinton brand is past its sell buy date, and Obama supporters will simply not support her in the #'s required.
As always the Reagan democrats will vote Republican. Sandi, have the super delegates not been shifting at a rate of nearly 10 to 1 in favour of Obama? These delegates dare not shaft Obama, or many of them will be out on their ear two years hence.

All the best.

Hmmm Let's start with the question is it over? Yes! put the fuzzie math a side and get with the real world! You can take away states: Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Alaska, Nevada and Kansas... and say that their votes don't count because they did not vote your way. The rules for the game was layed down before the game started! Everyone signed off on the play book! Now that your team is loosing, you want to stop the game and re-write the play book to fit the loosing team??? That is so un-american!!! These rules have been in place for 100 years or more. FL. Mic. knew what was at state when they change the rules to fit HRC. They gambled and the lost bottom line. Should FL. and Mic be seated, sure! 50/50 and only take 1/2 half! Because, when you brake the rules there has to be a cause and effect! This is why we have rules and laws to prevent kayos. and by the way: the point of no-return si 1627 or 1785. Is you did everything HRC way OB still wins!!! Right now he has 1673, and FL. Mic. 1804 way pass the 1785. So, it's a moot issue, and if the rolls were reverse? The DNC would have made OB leave the race after IN and NC.

Moses56,

So we need to move on, from here, so we can beat Mccain in Nov. otherwise you young people should start thing about one word if Mccain is elected and pushing this war out to 2013, DRAFT!!!!!!! DRAFT!!! How do you like him now??

Obama is doing what, by his campaign strategy, is the right thing in turning away from fighting Clinton to taking on McCain.

It's now not possible for Clinton to overtake pledged delegates in the primaries so why should Obama focus on her. It's notable that it's Obama that Shrub and McCain are targetting nowadays, never mentioning Clinton.

As for why Clinton's still in the race? I don't know.
26

Sandi,

#23,

LOL!

"These rules" have been in place since 1982. Don't confuse the rules that political parties put in place to elect their nominess with the rules that are used in general elections. For instance, in general elections each state in winner-take-all regarding electoral votes and there are no caucuses. Any of the electoral maps now being circulated show that Clinton would win handily and Obama would lose badly. The Democratic party wants to win in November, therefore then have to nominate Clinton. The rules say that superdelegates have to vote for the person they think will win in the general election. Right now, that isn't going to be Obama.

Is it over? Not until the final whistle blows, and that won't be until the Convention in August.

Oh, and by the way, Clinton won Nevada, but because the distribution of pledged delegates is so rigged, Obama got more of them.
27

Dekester,

Canada's westcoast 21/05/2008 20:55:54
The Democrats really look foolish don't they. Imagine them struggling to beat the Republicans in a year when the housing market in the States has tanked, the sub-prime debacle has devasted many, the Dow splutters along and the U.S is mired in the tragedy that is Iraq.

The Democrats cut their own throats. Sandi, nearly all the Democratic heavy hitters have put their weight behind B.O. Even Bernstein the Clinton biographer has said it is curtains. How do you explain that?

All the best.

In 1960 Richard Nixon was narrowly defeated by JFK largely because Cook County, Illinois, the county where Chicago is located, went to Kennedy under a cloud of suspicion.

There is little doubt that the mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley, stuffed the ballot boxes. The vote was close enough that Nixon could have demanded a recount and had he done so may well have won the election. Nixon refused because he didn't want to put the country thru that kind of uncertainty.

Fast forward to 2000 and Al Gore. It didn't trouble fatso one bit to hang the country out to dry while he perused his personal ambitions. He has set the stage for Hillary 2008. She won't concede until she is carried kicking and screaming from the convention hall.

Then there is the chance that she will actually be awarded the nomination. Don't forget that the superdelegates have skeletons in their closets of one size or another. Blackmail is the clinton's weapon of choice. Beware, Barak!

Call it what you will, both campaigns have "donated" funds to the campaign coffers of the elected officials who are superdelegates. But, the Obama campaign has "donated" about three or four times as much to many more people than the Clinton campaign. Something like 85% of the superdelegates who endorsed Obama had received money from him. The percentage for Clinton is much lower, around 15%. Those numbers will not be absolutely accurate as I'm writing this from memory, but it is in that rough area.

Did you hear Obama's reason why he lost Kentucky? He said “Kentucky is one of those Middle States that does not know who I am and the Middle states know Hillary since she is from Arkansas”

I guess Obama forgot Kentucky boarders his home State of Illinois. Then again he claimed he had already campaigned in 57 of the 58 States. If McCain or Bush claimed we had an extra 8 States the media would have been all over them saying they were idiots

To explain how Israel can 'force' the American president to do her bidding you have offered several reasons. The first of which is, 'by the force of public opinion.' Are you sure you thought that out? By that do you mean the force of American public opinion? There are 300,000,000 Americans so your reply here is begging the question. How does Israel force the opinions of three hundred million Americans? You are chasing your tail.

The are three or four million Jews in the US. That leaves approximately the same three hundred million Americans who aren't Jews. The vast majority of contributions to the Republican party are donations between twenty and a hundred dollars given by middle class Americans.

What you are saying reflects the mindset of a citizen of a small country where influence in a few cities determines the national mood. This is not possible in a country 3000 miles wide and 1500 miles deep, not counting Alaska. It isn't even possible to pull that off in most states. San Diego and San Francisco are both in the state of California, but they are 500 miles apart in distance and 500 light years apart socially and politically.

The rest of your comments are simply not germane.

first off if either DNC candidate fits the description of a "pop star"... that would be BO...

and yessir, rules are rules...

by the rules in place on 9/1/07 Michigan and Florida need to be counted as "half delegates"... as does Iowa, NewHampshire, and South Carolina... for the same infraction that MI/FL committed..... but somehow Howierd Dean and the DNC coronation committee doesnt think that ANY of these should be forced to follow the rules, much less all be forced into the SAME rules...

BO has NOTHING to complain about in Michigan, he did not HAVE to withdraw his candidacy... he did it voluntarily with Edwards, Richardson and Biden... and was plainly STUPID to not follow the lead of the presumptive frontrunner at that time....

as far as Mossad controlling the american media...
explain how BO gets an utter free ride in the american media while declaring that he wishes to conduct free and open dialog with countries like Iran who want to push israel into the sea?

your arguments to date are rather sloppy....

I see, Americans are 'programmed.' Ooooookay. Balder, let me offer you some friendly advice. If you want to be taken seriously you need to back up your claims with something more than your own opinion of a nation that is from three to six thousand miles away from you. No one is infallible and who knows, you may be right. That's why freedom of thought, speech, and the press are so important. It's less important that a lot of people are wrong than it is that someone, anyone, is right.

Nonetheless your comments lack force because you fail to substantiate them in a meaningful way. I have read Professors Mearsheimer and Walt's commentary. So have many others. It is not widely supported in the academic community, being faulted for questionable research among other things. Here is an example of their work taken from their book, "The Israel Lobby."

"As for so-called rogue states in the Middle East, they are not a dire threat to vital US interests, except inasmuch as they are a threat to Israel. Even if these states acquire nuclear weapons – which is obviously undesirable – neither America nor Israel could be blackmailed, because the blackmailer could not carry out the threat without suffering overwhelming retaliation."

The 'rogue states' are not a threat to American interests? The Taleban Afghani government, a rogue state by anyones measure, hosted the terrorist training camps of Osama bin Laden. From these camps came the terrorists who hijacked our planes and flew them into our buildings. I'd call that ornery, wouldn't you?

Then this, "neither America nor Israel could be blackmailed, because the blackmailer could not carry out the threat without suffering overwhelming retaliation." You are assuming that you are dealing with rational people behaving rationally. Suppose you're not. Then what? Suppose the people you are dealing with are so thoroughly convinced that God is on their side that they aren't thinking rationally. Remember their mantr
