Michelle Obama leads plaudits for husband at Democrat convention

DEMOCRAT Barack Obama offers "new hope" for America and would make an "extraordinary president", his wife and party leaders said today.
Michelle Obama used stories from her personal life to emphasise her husband's American values and that he understood what the United States needs – despite his exotic-sounding name.

US Senator Edward Kennedy, the sole surviving son of America's most celebrated political dynasty, said the 47-year-old Illinois senator offered "new hope" and that America would "scale the heights" again under Mr Obama's leadership.

Liberal heavyweight Mr Kennedy, who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in May, said "nothing, nothing" was going to keep him away from the convention.

But the opening night of the Democratic National Convention lacked any serious criticism of President George Bush or Mr Obama's Republican rival John McCain.

Instead, it was a relatively soft introduction to Mr Obama, his life, his values, and the aims for his presidency.

In a prime-time television address, carried live by the US networks, Mrs Obama, 44, said she believed her husband would be "an extraordinary president".

She used her most high profile speech of the campaign to date to expose details of Mr Obama's personal story to a wider audience and to introduce the man she married to America.

"What struck me when I first met Barack was that even though he had this funny name, and even though he had grown up all the way across the continent in Hawaii, his family was so much like mine," she said.

Mrs Obama recalled her husband carefully driving her home from the hospital after the birth of her first daughter, Malia, and that he was determined to give her "something he never had, the affirming embrace of a father's love".

Both Malia, 10 and Sasha, seven, joined their mother on the stage at the end of her speech.

Mrs Obama emphasised that her husband, who has struggled to attract support from working class Americans, was raised by working class grandparents; she told voters who are focused on the troubled US economy that his family had struggled to pay the bills; and she said that their families had the same values, a belief in truth and honesty, and that "you can make it if you try".

To loud applause from the delegates, Mrs Obama also praised her husband's former rival Hillary Clinton for putting "those 18 million cracks in that glass ceiling so that our daughters and our sons can dream a little bigger and aim a little higher".

Mrs Obama said her husband was running for president to end the war in Iraq responsibly, to build an economy that helps every family, and to make sure that healthcare was available to every American.

"The world as it is just won't do, that we have an obligation to fight for a world as it should be and that is the thread that connects our hearts," she said.

"That is the thread that runs through my journey, and Barack's journey, and so many other improbably journeys that have brought us here tonight where the current of history meets this new tide of hope."

To a standing ovation, she went on: "And, you see, that is why I love this country."

Mrs Obama was criticised in February this year when, during a comment on her husband's candidacy, she said that "for the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country".

Later, Mr Obama, appearing via video link from Kansas City, Missouri, spoke to his wife and daughters on the stage, with both girls saying: "I love you, Daddy".

Earlier, more than 4,000 delegates raised the roof of the Pepsi Centre in Denver, Colorado, as they waved blue and white "Kennedy" signs during an emotional standing ovation for the 76-year-old Massachusetts senator.

Mr Kennedy, who was not scheduled to make a speech due to his ill health, said: "I have come here tonight to stand with you, to change America, to restore its future, to rise to our best ideals, and to elect Barack Obama President of the United States."

With his left hand bandaged, and his right hand shaking, many observers said it was adrenalin which enabled Mr Kennedy to make his speech after he travelled to Denver reportedly against the advice of his doctors and his wife.

Following an emotional video tribute, which saw many of the delegates in tears, Mr Kennedy went on: "Barack Obama will close the book on the old politics of race and gender, of group against group, and of straight against gay.

"And Barack Obama will be a commander-in-chief who understands that young Americans in uniform must never be committed to a mistake but always to a mission worthy of their bravery."

It was the first key moment on the first day of the four-day long convention.

"We are all Americans," Mr Kennedy said.

"This is what we do. We reach the moon. We scale the heights. I know it; I've seen it; I've lived it; and we can do it again."

He said it would mean "victory for our party and renewal for our nation" and added: "This November the torch will be passed again to a new generation of Americans, so with Barack Obama, and for you, and for me, our country will be committed to his cause.

"The work begins anew, the hope rises again, and the dream lives on."

Mr Kennedy, who helped bring peace to Northern Ireland and is the second most senior member of the Senate, also pledged that he would still be there next January, when the next president takes office.

Earlier, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi admitted to reporters that the Democrats were still reconciling following a bitter primary season battle between Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton.

But she added that "wallowing in all of this" was not productive.
Her comments came after Mr Obama played down divisions with former president Bill Clinton and the first lady yesterday.

"I am absolutely convinced that both Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton understand the stakes," he told reporters in Moline, Illinois.

Mrs Clinton will deliver her own speech at the convention late tonight before she is expected to formally release her hard-won primary delegates to Mr Obama at a reception tomorrow.

The fact of the matter is that her speech was fine for what it was meant to do. It was meant to soften her. It was very well written and she read it from the teleprompter with ease.

Mrs. Obama’s handlers have been trying to soften her of 8 months now and I think they now have some of the public fooled. Overall the opening night of the convention did not tell us anything about Obama or what he will do for America, it was kind of like the past year of Obama, no plans just say the words hope and dreams. They threw up Ted Kennedy they Senator who killed Mary Jo Kopechne at “Chappaquiddick” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chappaquiddick_incident They had that drunk murderer speak because democrats only have double standards and he just had a brain tumor removed to get sympathy votes.

Kennedy never served any time for driving drunk off that bridge and leaving the scene of the accident. Later we found out the poor woman was alive under water for hours in his car before she died. He ran away from the scene of the accident because he did not want to be caught with another woman. What a sick individual the liberals hold in such high regard.

What interest if any, should it be of ours, in the dis-united UK over this carefully planned stage managed non-sensible Yankee political jamboree that has been suddenly let loose upon us over the past few days?.
No sooner have we got rid of one well planned and staged managed distraction from the real world and its sad, tragic and dangerous state, than the powerfull Establishment elite, releases another upon us.
The people who have total political control of the States since the end of the Nineteenth Century will decide who will be their next stooge to don the mantle off PRESIDENT of THE UNITED STATES, as they proceeded to do during the whole of the Twentieth Century and the beginning off the present Century.
Go through their records which are readily available and you will be rather surprised to find that most had the support off either legalised crooks or the Maffia during their preidential campaigns.
Their military might has been used to crush any country however small who refuse too submit to their arrogance, threats and control and the present regime have absolutely no intention whatsoever of giving that up! Whoever they decide will be the New President will do exactly as they are instructed.

Finally I watched the whole 22 minutes of Mrs Obama's Discours de Denver Colorado. I had less trouble watching the whole hour plus of Ségolène Royal's Discours de Villepinte as I understand her language better than Mrs Obama's.

I had to take the Denver dissertation in stages. Sickened by the first few minutes of bootstrap pulling, I switched it off and went back after half an hour. Sickened by the public relations driven hostages to fortune, such as protecting the lives of American troops in Iraq, I had another little rest before I was sickened by the shameless use of the Obama children to tug further at the brittle heartstrings already stretched by the humble beginnings of their parents.

Mrs Obama showed no sign of having learnt anything from Cherie Blair and Hillary Clinton. It is her husband who will be Commander in Chief if he is elected president. If he is elected, he will be Commander in Chief in only 4 months from now.

Her job will be to keep the show on the road and otherwise stay out of it. Her career will be keeping her children secure against the pressures of public life. Hillary Clinton was badly damaged when she went beyond this and fouled up re-organising health care during her husband's presidency. Cherie Blair was in constant trouble for commenting on the policy of her husband's government.

We, as the informal 51st state of the American Union, are fit only to bankroll its imperialist ambitions with the lives of our military personnel. Our Oxford Coroner, in the light of our special relationship with the USA, is not fit to be told the truth when the Americans kill our troops.

Nor are we fit to vote on who its President should be. However, Michelle Obama is not a candidate.

#4 I think Regina is correct in asserting that it was designed to make her appear "softer" to the country. Even here in the South, color is less of an issue than the "world" may surmise. The effect of the "pageant" last night was, in my opinion, to pain the Obamas as a successful Middle Class family that has overcome adversity and achieved the "American Dream."

While this may be true, it doesn't qualify the inexperienced candidate to lead the most powerful nation in the Free World.

And yes, #3 wattie, we haven't had to lick anyone's boots since the 1700's and don't plan to, either. Too many of us here have the blood of Scots flowing in our veins. Why did she give a speech? The spouse of the presumptive candidate never gives a speech other than perhaps to introduce their spouse after the roll-call vote.

Of course, the Obamas want to avoid having a roll-call vote because they are so terrifiend that he would not win. So they're just not going to have an open, honest roll-call vote.

It's the corrupt Chicago political machine gone national.

Obama and the democrats aren't socialists or communists, but their agenda has too many "socialist" policies to be good for this country. If you believe in small government, low taxes, personal responsibility and ACCOUNTABILITY, then Obama is not your man. If your a lazy slug that likes to blame others for your personal choices and be rewarded for it with government handouts, then Obama is your man. Unfortunately, the "social" programs here have created a large segment of dependant people that now refuse to hold themselves accountable or even educate themselves and their votes are "paid" for by the democrats in the form of handouts.

I think you might want to do a little more homework. Social Security, Medicare, food stamps, welfare, etc. are all forms of socialist programs. A pure capitalist wouldn't have any of them.

I have no problem helping people down on their luck, disabled, mentally challenged, etc. Some people can't help themselves. But I have no sympathy what so ever for those that CHOOSE to be worthless. People that CHOOSE to drop out of a school system that costs them nothing. People that CHOOSE to have babies to increase their welfre payments. People that CHOOSE to not work in order to live of the government. I think you get the idea.

What makes more sense, to give people an ear of corn every day to keep them fed, or educate them to grow the corn for themselves so they never go hungry? Too many people in the democratic party would rather give them the corn. And they take it from those that CHOOSE to grow it.

The liberal mockery here is worse than in Berkly CA, (ala Nanci Pelosi, S Of The H), its simply not academic. Your own European pundits seem to have it right, were Obama to run for EU president he would be elected with 80% of the vote! He is a Frenchman who goes by his initials...Charles de Gaulle had the sense to realize,to paraphrase, that though America is a daughter of Europe she left in the 19th century. What you need to know is unprecedented, Obama's polling numbers went down after the convention opened, this is unprecedented in modern times. If McCain enjoys a modest 6-7% jump next week; well you can thank Russia for keeping the Republicans in power; a notion that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy-militarily. Say a new hello to the continuation of the needed War On Terror the USA leads by necessity. You'll thank us when oil drops below $80 a barrel next year. I think that WeThePeople in 25 was too correct for my comfort when he said Americans were ignorant.

SouthernGent, let me correct you. The corn farmers in America are heavily subsidized by the government, as I understand more than 40% of their revenue comes from these subsidies. Republicans and Democrats both want to shift this subsidy into the ethanol subsidies which are evil and are driving up the price of food for the poor with no real benefits.

I contend that we should distinguish between capitalism and free market thinking. Capitalism is when government privatizes the dollar-creation process for the sake of private profit and then seeks to manipulate laws & regulations to protect the interests of big corporations. Republicans and Democrats both are strong capitalists in this way. Free market thinking is when government sets rules & policies to establish sound market functioning for the public interest. That is what we did a long time ago, but no more.

In America the subsidies or income transfers by government to the richest 20% exceed the subsidies or income transfers to the bottom 20%. then the people are brainwashed into complaining about the income transfers to the bottom 20% and to support the income transfers to the top 20%.

The corn growers still CHOOSE to grow the corn, regardless of payment. They could CHOOSE not to and sit on their asses for handouts. And by and large, the people in the bottom 20% CHOOSE to be there. Many could CHOOSE to better themselves and move out of that 20%, but what is their motivation when good ole uncle sam gives them money to CHOOSE not to.

It largely seemed a speech full of platitudes and mom's apple pie. Imagine if Sarah Brown gave a speech defending Gordon's record. Not that she could with any conscience but imagine it. Would that move his case on any or would his record of actual achievement and statement of policy not count for a lot more.

Any time I listen to either an Obama or Hillary Clinton speech I have to ask myself - what did they just say there? If elected, he may very well put a new, softer face on foreign policy. But his domestic policies have a greater chance of having a negative impact globally. The US economy is bumping its butt along right now, causing ripples throughout the global economy. Mr Obama has pledged to take care of his bought and paid for democratic votes by raising taxes and giving them more handouts. Economics 101 suggests the last thing you do for a struggling economy is to raise taxes. Yet he has no choice if he plans on keeping his promises. Time will tell, but my guess is he will do more harm than good.

The conservative journals of opinion & republican party were mostly taken over by neo-cons. Bush & the Republican leaders of today are great traitors to the 'conservatives' of decades ago.

I read that article you quoted by Buchanan several days ago. I liked it. Here's Buchanan's article for today.

http://www.lewrockwell.com/buchanan/buchanan96.html

Buchanan makes a 7-figure income because he's a journalist that connects with people, he's very intelligent and does good work. But in 2004 he endorsed Bush for president. So, I'd say Buchanan is a sleaze-ball. I think he endorsed Bush to protect his 7-figure income. He's on tv frequently and gets paid for it. as long as the people have a spokesperson like Buchanan on tv saying the things they desperately want to hear, but then endorsing Bush just before the election, then the opposition to the regime will be limited and confused. This is what the rulers want.

Paul Craig Roberts is another conservative you would like. He writes all the time too. But he gets paid almost zero for it because he is too flagrant and uncompromising. Roberts was ejected from all the mainstream media about 7 years ago.

Within 50 years the people who are pure european in their genetics in America will be the minority. But many Americans are actually mixed race. Many Americans considered white actually have some black blood in them. About 80-90% of Americans who are white and whose family is from what we call the southern states are around 5% black in their genes. There were once 500 native tribes in what is today the United States. A very large percentage of them integrated completely into the white population so that they no longer really exist except for a few people who are 80-90% white. All of the blacks in America except recent immigrants are on average 50% white in their genes.

Historians can portray us as having a racist history only if they are selective in how they tell the story, as the story is always more complex.

e plurubus unum was not an easy rule to live by. that is latin for 'from many roots become one'.

the UK has imposed onto it unusual sensibilities regarding hate speech. Things we Americans don't think are hate speech, the authorities in UK do.

But don't worry or fret over this. Ridiculous standards on hate speech are working their way to our country. During the Bush admin there was a conversation between a congressional committee & the executive branch about 'hate speech'. The congressional committee asked the Bush admin what would be some potential examples of hate speech banned by legislation. The Bush administration responded with a letter identifying some bible verses as being 'hate speech'. The Bush admin did not list any other examples.

Jesus of course in the 4 gospel books (Matthew Mark Luke John) said many things the current US government considers to be 'anti-semitic'. This is not my opinion. The Bush admin sent a letter to the US Congress saying this.

So, don't gloat over any alleged US-superiority on this 'hate-speech' thing. The 1'st Ammendment guarantees freedom of speech, but the president said that the constitution was just a g__ d____ piece of paper.

Remember what the bible tells us about evil ruling in this world. It says that this world is made in such a way that evil people will end up ruling it. This situation will not be rectified until jesus returns.

Dingy. with a handle like yours, who is the numpty? So you have a Black candidate representing the Dem. party for president. That is the first since 1776. Not too shabby. It only took you 232 years. I hope he wins in Nov. Don't play the racism card with me. It is still very much alive in the good ole U.S.A. I spend 6 months of the year there, regards

That poster 'harry reid' puts the 'dingy' in his middle name because it is his ridiculous attempt to ridicule the real Harry Reid who is majority leader of the US Senate (leader of the Democrats in the Senate). Possibly the same person who posts as 'Nancy Pelosi' and puts the 'stretch' in the middle name. Nancy Pelosi is leader of the majority democrats in the US House of Representatives.

here is a great video clip from the Democrat National Convention.

Dennis Kucinich would be a far better candidate than Barack Obama.

Here is a web-site showing the speeches given by US Congressman Jim Trafficant on the floor of the US House of Representatives. Jim Trafficant is in a jail cell.

http://www.traficant.com/speech.htm

Jim Trafficant was a congressman from Ohio. He spoke the truth on the floor of the US House of Representatives against the corrupt slime that rules our country. and he was thrown in jail because of this (and because he put money in his pocket). But he will always be dear to our hearts.

John McCain calls himself a maverick. But he votes with George Bush 90% of the time. Thats not a maverick, it is a sidekick.

Sorry Wally, "Nancy" is a friend’s wife that I turned onto the Scotsman. Your paranoia is getting the better of you.

Total visible minority of Canada = 5,068,095 which is 16.2% of the population so you can't say they only have whites to choose from. You are being very ignorant!

So why don't you elect a Black, Indian, or Asian Prime Minister? The least you could do is start treating your aboriginals with a little respect.

wally, you REALLY need to get back on the meds...

so in your world "hate speach" and "hate crime" legislation is the nefarious tool of the conservatives?

wow dude you REALLY need to remember where this all came from....

the 70's and 80's when the DEMOCRATS controlled the house AND senate... remember that whole "politically correct" movement?

the most invasive "hate crime" laws are found in the most LIBERAL states... (you know all along the left coast...)

I just listened to the Hillary speach this evening, and
I think that the two gals should get into their pants-
suits and spend more time abroad. Scotland would be a
good first stop. Michelle and Hillary seem to comp-
lement each other. They are both married to dudes with
down-in-the-gutter pasts, and it would be great to share their wisdom with the whole world of lame, lazy,
loony liberals.

50 Dingy We thought we would give Bozo the Clown a shot at it first but you elected him 8 years ago in your country. Once again, you have upstaged us. Lets hope Obama has better luck. Perhaps the Pillsbury dough boy {Mc cain}will win out. That should make the likes of you happy. 4 more years of the same old thing, regards

I looked for that link telling the story about how a letter was sent from Bush admin to congressional committee showing an example of hate speech, and they selected a verse from the bible to show what they thought was hate speech. That happened under Bush.

Sorry, I couldn't find link. But, I found this other link that is really neat.

#14 Wattie: Actually I do have Native American ancestry, both Cherokee and Creek. And your post actually sounds more like the prologue of a very bad novel. No one lynched "thousands of harmless blacks" in this country, BTW. If you believe otherwise, you're a buffoon with a keyboard.

All that still doesn't qualify Obama to run the strongest nation on Earth.

Wally,

RSBuff is correct in 56. He's from Georgia (southern US state) and says he has Cherokee & Creek ancestors. This is very common for southerners. Those tribes were from the southeast, they integrated completely into the white community. Read my 44 for a quick history lesson.

The Cherokee were entirely integrated prior to 1850 with much marriage to the whites and more importantly, the Cherokee lived in towns & on farms exactly the same as the whites in the same communities doing the same things. The Cherokee were very strong in Tennessee which is north of Georgia. A large portion of the Cherokee were wiped out in the US civil war as they served for the south and their units hit particularly hard. There were lots of blacks that fought voluntarilly for both the south and the north in that war as well. There were natives or Indians going to Harvard University in 1680.

The mindless caricature that wattie shows is not an accurate picture of the American nation at all. We have a very rich and diverse ethnic history and it has always been that way. The Scots & Irish have contributed tremendously to our country.

Well at least it's nice to know michelle obama is finally proud of her country(the sarcasm is dripping off my keyboard).
Wally #57 is right--there were at least 40,000 blacks fighting for the south, and another 40,000 as 'mule skinners'for the army. There were plans to raise a 300,000 black man army by the south, but the war ended before that happened.
