How a baby could decide who's next US president (if conspiracy theorists are right)

PITY John McCain. For months he struggled to impose himself in an election that was all about Barack Obama. Now the spotlight has finally shifted to his own campaign, but only to focus on a stream of revelations about his vice-presidential choice, Sarah Palin.
The Alaska governor was guaranteed an audience for her first televised address last night, but nothing she was likely to say could match the fascination with a daily diet of fresh disclosures about her colourful life.

First was the embarrassment over her apparent support for the Alaska Independence Movement, motto: Alaska First, which cuts across the Republican convention's slogan Country First.

Then there's Troopergate, in which the state is investigating allegations that she fired Alaska's public security chief because he did not fire a state trooper engaged in a custody battle with Mrs Palin's sister.

Also in the mix is her addiction to "pork barrel" spending, a practice Mr McCain vehemently opposes: as mayor of Wasilla, she raised £15 million in federal funds for the town, population 9,000.

And then there are the polar bears. Mrs Palin has filed a lawsuit on behalf of Alaska, joined by big oil companies, against the US government, demanding that the "endangered species" status of polar bears be lifted to allow new drilling.

In a publicity gem for the Obama campaign, she has intervened to ensure that a commemorative quarter dollar coin issued this week features not a polar bear but a grizzly.

And then there is "Babygate".

Monday's revelation that her daughter Bristol, 17, is five months pregnant by her ice-hockey player boyfriend, Levi Johnston, also 17, is not in itself damaging, but does undermine her claim to back family values.

More damaging is what it says about Mr McCain and his rush to find a VP. The fact she made the disclosure three days after being nominated, and that Mr McCain began vetting her only the day before she was picked, suggests he did not know of the matter.

The blogosphere is, meanwhile, in a frenzy over speculation that Mrs Palin's fifth child, Trig, born last April, is in fact the son of Bristol.

This speculation stems from the circumstances of the birth. By Mrs Palin's account, her waters broke on 17 April while she was at a Dallas conference. Instead of going to a local hospital, she gave her speech and took an 11-hour flight home, all the while suffering contractions, to have the baby in a local clinic.

It was to quash rumours she was covering for Bristol that Mrs Palin went public with the news of her daughter's pregnancy, pointing out that, at five months in, it was impossible for Bristol to have given birth in April.

In other circumstances, these revelations might be water under the bridge. This "baggage" is no heavier than that of either Mr McCain or, arguably, Mr Obama; the only difference being all the revelations have come at once. But they feed into criticism that she is unsuited to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, the more so with revelations that until last year she had never travelled abroad.

"She has zero foreign experience, zero," said David Gergen, a former White House adviser. "When the Republicans had the assertion that Barack Obama had no experience, they were making progress with that argument. Now they have selected someone with even less foreign policy exposure."

None of that fazes conservatives, who see her as one of their own, with a zeal for reform and a delight in the battle. As mayor of Wasilla in 1996, she reduced her own salary, sacked staff and cut taxes by 40 per cent. Elected as governor on an anti-sleaze ticket, Mrs Palin has enjoyed approval ratings of 70-80 percent.

Last night, Mr McCain's team came out fighting. "This nonsense is over," declared senior adviser Steve Schmidt in a written statement. "The McCain campaign will have no further comment about our long and thorough (vetting] process."

The McCain campaign has also scheduled a news conference to defend Mrs Palin's experience, and released a new advert in key states, an indication that advisers are concerned a flurry of criticism may be taking a toll.

How pressure from Republicans' right wing led McCain to make hasty decision

JOHN McCain's controversial decision to pick outsider Sarah Palin as his running mate stems from an abrupt change of direction forced on him by conservatives in his own party.

Mr McCain had built his primary campaign around a liberal social agenda, hoping to win over centrist swing voters at the November election.

Instead, he appears to have caved in to pressure from conservatives who told him to move to the right or they would not campaign for him.

Unable to gain a polling lead over Barack Obama, Mr McCain has done several about-turns.

He has dropped opposition to the Bush administration's tax cuts for the top 1 per cent of the population, and he has joined conservatives in calling for illegal immigrants to be rounded up and deported.

Most significantly, he has dropped his opposition to the official Republican platform, which seeks to ban abortion.

The next president is likely to have to replace two supreme court judges, and the Christian right wants them to be anti-abortion judges.

Last week, conservatives reportedly told him they wanted more, vetoing his preferred choices for vice-president, the Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty and the Democrat senator Joe Lieberman, as too liberal.

Mr McCain decided against the conservative favourite, Mitt Romney, leaving himself in a quandary.

With only days to make a decision, he chose Mrs Palin, having begun vetting her only the day before.

But while delighting conservative Republicans, Mr McCain may now struggle to reach voters in the centre ground who are being courted by the Obama campaign.

The caption to the photo reads: "Bristol Palin holds baby brother, Trig, who bloggers claim is really her daughter". The plot thickens!
2

Wally,

By The Rivers Of Babylon (USA) 04/09/2008 00:31:56
the web-sites that started the rumor that the baby Trig really belonged to the 17-year old daughter used pictures to make their case, pictures allegedly showing the mom not pregnant, the daughter pregnant. but there was no evidence from the beginning. These were real pictures, but from the wrong time-periods. The 1 picture they used most was found in Alaska Daily News from October of 2006, yet the accusers said it was from March of 2008. and the girl did not look pregnant, just slightly plump. the whole thing was a fraud if you looked closely. but after it was disclosed as a fraud, it didn't matter to the many liberals who love to throw mud. they still cling to the view that Trig is the grandson, not the son. Then it was announced that Bristol was pregnant and scheduled to marry her beau Levi Johnston. and the liberal bloggers (some of them) still said the baby was Bristol's (born in mid-april) though Bristol is said to be 5-months pregnant now. and the social conservatives rallied around Palin as a result. Despite that this Palin woman has problems her own, like article says above, she excels at getting money from Washington and then calls herself against government waste. First thing she said on national stage was how she's a reformer who opposed a boon-doggle called 'bridge to nowhere' that washington was going to pay for. But journalists in Alaska took out old interviews where she enthusiastically endorsed it. This woman fires people constantly. After she fired her police chief in the small town they were trying to hire a new one and the guy they picked turned the job down though he had sought it because he said the job was 'too political'. She fired one guy because he dated a woman that she disapproved of.

So MUCH of this article is misguided and false, the photo caption makes me wonder if we're all being "punked"! Those closest to the Palins knew about Bristol, and so did McCain's people. She is disliked by the oil companies because she challenged them, and is challenging the method by which the whole study was done to determine polar bears were endangered. There were six running around the Prudhoe Bay oilfields last week. "Troopergate" is a complete fabrication by a egotistical man who was completely ineffective in his job, and by all counts a woman hater (just ask his wife or girlfriends). Yes, like any good Mayor, she lobbied for money for our community and was successful in so many efforts. She has been a registered, documented republican, yet supported her husband when he had an affiliation with the AIP. That doesn't make her a traitor, just a supportive wife. She is a friend to the people of Alaska and we will be proud to watch her server, but sorry to see her go. Please someone - tell the Scottsman to fix at least the caption of Bristol's photo - or maybe the blatant ignorance fits in with the rest of this article...

The national discourse in US is controlled by CIA. The regime that rules finds it advantageous to put Democrats in power now. Because Republicans have had power and the people have become discontented with them. If they give people good reason to vote Democrat (even though Democrats won’t change the bad policies), then Democrats will get in and continue the same general agenda as the Republicans did. But the people will be more tolerant of it because it is Democrats. and along the way they'll throw a few bones to the people somehow. But the same basic agenda will continue.

The Palin selection and media's interaction with her are orchestrated. McCain is the scheduled loser, Obama the scheduled winner, both candidates cooperate with this agenda. This system they use now facilitates 2 important goals. 1 - it strengthens the republican voters' determination to stick with republicans & oppose democrats after seeing how Palin was savaged. and also strengthens democrat voters' dislike of republicans thus keeping them loyal to democrats. Each side sees their candidates as a means to stop the other side and they don't even care that their candidates on both sides march us down a bad path. and 2 - it distracts everyone from real issues. Like why is it that the US fights this 'war on terror'? Why is it that we started wars in Iraq, Afghanistan & Somalia? Why is it that people must be arrested without any evidence and then tortured? Why is it that torture is considered a method to gather intelligence when it just doesn't get good results? Why is it that the CIA is using private contractors now to gather intelligence? Why is it that the US government gives the Federal Reserve bank $400 billion every year? Why is it that 40% of social security tax revenue is diverted from social security and spent on the war? etc etc.

America is a great nation as nations go, but it has been overcome from within. There is an evil regime ruling it. They're very powerfu

weeping Scullion weeping.

Consider this woman Peggy Noonan. She's a prominent journalist that always supports Republicans. She had an article appear in the Wall Street Journal today supporting Palin. Then, she was appearing on tv and 'accidentally' they sent out audio of her making 'off-the-air' comments that savaged Palin and ridiculed her. How does that happen? C I A.

a great nation overcome from within. People say it is insane to think that the CIA could be so powerful in our media as to orchestrate & contro this type of a dysfunctional national conversation. After all, its allegedly a free country - right? Yes, but 95% of all the media is owned by only 6 corporations. and in the mid 1970's a CIA officer testified under oath at public congressional hearings that they had 450 mainstream journalists under their influence and that the efforts were ongoing to continue to get more.

its like I told you, the national discussion is fabricated. and the americans are trained to think that all legitimate discussion occurs within the national media. their passions are manipulated and their minds focused on foolishness. While real issues & stories are ignored. and when I show the links to important stories documenting bad policy of the government, everyone says it is a lie because it is not shown to us on tv. a free country - overcome from within. while an agenda of evil is implemented globally by its government.

Southern Gent is right in #9. The liberal bloggers started making comments like that (in #5) days ago. though there's no evidence for the accusation, doesn't matter. The bad part is that the hospital where the baby was born does not list it as being born. They publish a list every day of babies born. This baby's name is apparently not on the list for the day she was said to be born. The whole thing is orchestrated so that we will be divided & distracted.

Bill Clinton had many fantastic scandals against him. Read the English author/journalist who works for top UK newspapers, Ambrose Evans Pritchard. Buy the book. Those scandals were aired in what we call 'alternate' media, but never in the mainstream. It caused our country to be distracted and divided.

Clinton attacked 4 countries while president with no cause. Bush attacked 4 countries while president with no cause. Our people are ignorant of the details. But the majority of them vote for war-mongers (if they vote for either of the 2 big parties) and yet our people aren't really war-mongers. Even people who live in the rural areas where farmers benefit from high food prices do not support the ethanol subsidies, yet they mostly vote for politicians who do. The ethanol subsidies according to a World Bank economist caused 75% of the great upswing in raw food prices in last 7 years and it is this that causes the people of Haiti to eat dirt cookies and millions to be on the edge of starvation. Starvation for millions, it is not an issue, Sarah Palin's baby is an issue.

God bless Mrs. Palin and her family and shame on anyone who demeans them with falsehoods.

Sen. McCain, who by the way spent several years in hell, has picked a special person to be his mate.

US politics is like a soap opera just as politics in every country is. If you know the history of the US, there was treachery, smearing and skullduggery in the times of Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln.

This garbage about Trig. This is their son, their daughter is getting married, her son is going off to war, their will be a voice in the White House for the special needs children.

Good article but you missed one of the major flaws in her story. Senator Steven, the senior Republican Senator from Alaska, now under indictment, has been trying to get the federal government to finance a major bridge to be built in a rural area of Alaska, which came to be known as the Bridge to Nowhere. She claimed she told Congress "Thanks, but No thanks" because she, like McCain, is a 'reformer' and against these earmark pork barrel appropriations. Well it tiurns out she campaigned in favor of the bridge, accepted $200,000,000 in federal money for the bridge and then decided to use that money for other Alaska projects instead of turning it back. In the meantime, Alaska received hundreds of millions from oil companies as royalties for oil drilling and this money she is having rebated to individual Alaskans. So the rest of America is paying for her roads and Alaskans are getting checks for thousands of dollars per capita. Her skyrocketing career has been built on destroying senior party office holders, getting backing from the anti-abortion rights groups and making sure Alaskans are making as much money as possible.

God, it's embarrassing to be an American these days...

Lynn, I hate to break it to you, but I'm a single mother, and I wouldn't vote for Sarah Palin or John McCain if you held a gun to my head. The last thing I want are more "family values" Republicans in office who have zero skill at foreign policy, who have little tolerance for gays or people who are different, and whose greed is surpassed only by their desire to control other people's private lives. The entire world is watching this election to see whether the American electorate can redeem itself for the insanity of 2004.

For what it's worth, I think the media ought to consider Palin's children, or the children of any public figure, off-limits. But I couldn't let #19 get away with such a sweeping statement. Most single moms believe women ought to be able to decide if/when they become mothers. And no woman who's pro-choice is going to vote for McCain/Palin.

ATP2000 in #20 is correct. in her speech tonight at RNC she lied blatantly when she said she told Congress 'no' on the bridge to nowhere. I read Alaska Daily News where they quoted her from her campaign for governor where she supported that. Then when congress cut the funding, then she opposed it. This is a persistent problem with her. She was also proven to have lied to all of Alaska on the Wooten/Monegan scandal. Here's an interesting e-mail allegedly from somebody that knows her well and is from Wasilla.

watch for revelations about her church. A lot of taped sermons have mysteriously been erased. She's supposedly had links with a group that uses underhand means to target jews for conversion. And as for standing up to oil companies, she preached that people should pray for the completion of an oil pipeline.

I watched and listened to Palin address the RNC a few hours ago and as a Democrat I have been worried ever since. Her performance was flawless and she had the delegates eating out of her hand, that is when they were not on their feet cheering for her. Like most Democrats supporting Barak, we are well aware that sometimes his rhetoric exceeds his logic and we just pray that no one notices. Well Sara Palin does and she jabbed at the soft belly all during her speech and as she continued to phrase Baraks own words I came to realize just how shallow thay are. Here are examples; "Barak, the Community organizer, says I have no experience, well Barak I have been a Mayor and am now a Governor and balance budgets for Community organizers, what's your experience? As an Illinois legislater and a US Senator have you ever led a government? I have! and Barak says that the Road to the Presidency is a remarkable journey well while he is on that road I will be on the road to Washington". She went on to hold her own involvement as the Commander of the Alaska National Guard and her visits to meet with them in Iraq more responsible than his visit as a tourist", and it went on and on as she kept tearing strips from his rhetoric while her whole family were on the platform and Cindy McCain held her baby for all to see. This is the kind of human interest that many apolitical Americans swallow and digest. As a Democrat I say to Barak, You have to stop opening your mouth just to change feet. I'm worried!

The interesting question that’s missed is…. is she going to have another child? She’s had 5, the last one was 5 months ago and there’s every likelihood she will have another. Her last child was the one with Downs, which makes the conspiracy theories less likely, Downs is much more frequent in older mothers.

Thus the really interesting question is will she be the first presidential campaigner to be likely to have a baby in office? And as McCain is already 73 and has already had cancer… then she has a strong possibility of being President.

That would make a change, babies and high elected office!

It’s a shame she does not sound like much of a parent, believes in teaching these poor babes Creationism and waving assault weapons about.

With the events in Minneapolis-St Paul, where martial law was declared to end all public gatherings after the Republicans started violating the First Amendment by arresting anyone who planned to protest and wasn't Republican, it's pretty clear that America has gone from the two party system to the Nazi party system anyway. #37 you say "We have free health care for everyone here - how's yours?" I've lived and worked and even suffered pain in both the US and UK and although it's expensive to become ill in the US I'd rather do it there than here where the NHS refuses important life saving treatment because it's too expensive for them to cover. The US offers cutting edge treatments and even the poor who don't have medical insurance have the same opportunities. Most hospitals there will write off charges if people really can't afford the treatment. I carry private insurance here in the UK because I know if I become critically ill the chances of getting better/quicker care comes from the private hospitals/Doctors. They don't close entire hospitals in the US because of infections (i.e. MRSA & C-diff)and getting an appointment to see a specialist (usually referred because there's a real problem) is a fraction of the wait here. Don't speak about what you don't really know about. And... in case you didn't know... you DO pay for your medical care to some extent through your taxes.

My entire issue and this is of Sarah or her husband if he was the Vp . You have a baby with special needs and a daughter going through a life altering experiance. Why would you take on more now. I would think at this moment they both would like to focus on their family. My middle daughter was hospitalized for trying to kill herself....I sure wasn't running for mayor at the time. Meaning, I focused on my family insted of my were my job was taking me. That and throwing my daughters life out in front of the whole world. Even in Scotland.

Let's be clear, the US people have a clear choice in their elections - change which won't be for the worse but may well be for the better, or more of the same crazy policies that have alienated so many home and abroad. Well, we thought McCain was nutty but Palin is even worse - how can you be pro "life" but be anti gun control, for example? Also, hearing her talk about god being behind the invasion of Iraq and apparently controlling it, is incredible - I mean, is it that she's so stupid you think she's clever?

#51 - You are still missing the point - You can afford to pay private - the system here is for everyone, it is not perfect by any means and if you can afford better, good luck to you. I take it you would rather scrap it and deny any health care whatsoever to our poor and those unable to pay for private care? Because, no doubt, it is their fault they are poor in the first place?
55

SouthernGent,

The system over here is not perfect either, but we certainly don't need the government running our health care. The government already does a pis* poor job of running security at our airports, controlling our borders, issuing drivers licenses and passports, running our schools, etc. Bigger government is not the answer.

The poor here are not denied health care either, contrary to what you may believe over there. Anybody, including illegals, may go to any hospital for treatment, and the law says they can not be denied. Most of these people pay nothing, as the hospitals eat the cost. Medicare (which by the way has a 31% fraud rate because it is run by the government) is also a social insurance program for the old and poor paid for with tax dollars.

People like to complain that they can't afford health insurance, yet a national program will force them to pay with higher taxes. It isn't free, as yours is not free. Let me decide how to pay for my health care, not some bureaucrat in Washington.

Why do you want the government to take care of you? Would you not rather do it yourself?

It was a wonderful speech, given by the best-looking pit bull I've ever seen. Women like Sarah Palin have been here since the first boat arrived and I think it is time for an American WOMAN to be elected to the Executive Branch of our country.

The liberal mainstream media will continue to dis her, but her message last night rang true for many people and for disaffected supporters of Hillary. This is going to be one of the best Presidential races in our country's history.

Call it a soap opera if you will, but it's real and it's already changed the way future campaigns will be conducted!

She has won the election for McCain. It will be tight, but it is over. The funny part is that most of the world does not even know it.

She is NOT into porkbarrel spending once she looked into the "bridge to nowhere" she cancelled all plans. She downsized the governor's office and returned big oil money to her citizens and lowered taxes. When was the last time any Scottish govt returned money to the people say from the off shore drilling?

hospitals do not publish birth announcements... its a little thing called HIPA.... a hospital arbitrarily disclosing patient information would be ILLEGAL

most parents sign a form that acknowledges the birth to the local paper to be published in the vital statistics section... HOWEVER THERE IS NO LEGAL REQUIREMENT FOR THIS TO HAPPEN... NONE ZERO... I know this because in the rush I forgot to sign one for my daughter... and only got her "vital statistics" blurb by rushing down to the local paper....

"the bridge"...
IF you did your research...
her backing of the bridge was early in her campaign for governor... during a visit to Ketchikan...
I know you have this need to believe that those who aspire to govern have some omnipotent access to all the facts... but do you find it SO hard to believe that she supported the CONCEPT of the bridge... linking the town to their airport... and more land for "urban" expansion... BUT when as governor she had the chance to LOOK at the details (the COST) made an executive decision that this was NOT the best way to spend 400 MILLION dollars... maybe there is a cheaper way to get the services Ketchikan needed??? or maybe if ALASKA (richest state in the union) decided they wanted THAT bridge... they would build it themselves....

All of the above becomes small to me when I consider that this is the woman who renewed the legality of aerial wolf hunting.

That's right: they chase the wolves to exhaustion in small planes and then shoot them at point blank range.

Do we want anyone who thinks such unsportmanlike conduct is acceptable a heartbeat away from the American Presidency?

This isn't the central issue, of course - but the fact that she endorses this to me means she will have similarly sick views on other issues.

Pity she has influence over five young minds. She shouldn't have influence over anything.

arial hunting wolves...

what you breathlessly say sounds absolutely horrible...

however you MUST be a liberal... your "rhetoric" doesnt fare too well when you mesh it with reality

if you hunt the wolves down from a plane... and run them to exhaustion... how are you going to shoot them from point blank range...

to get to "point blank" you would have to be inside 20 yards wouldnt you???

how you going to do that in an airplane doing 80-120 MPH???

or are you saying that you run them to exhaustion
go land the plane then come in on foot to do the shootinig??? boy those wolves must be tired if they cant amble off on their own in the 20 minutes between landing the plane and getting to the "exhaustion" site....

you sound a little like the breathless liberals in Washington state who go on about using hunting dogs to hunt mountian lions... and are now complaining because of the mountain lion population explosion that is driving these cats down into suburbia...

Many expats look to the Scotsman as their link to "home".
Enough is enough - sack this twit and please Mr Editor for the Scotsman can you get back to reporting and printing the actual news as opposed to spinning it.
Newspaper circulation is dropping because of lack of factual news that is now being replaced by uneducated, ill informed opinionated garbage.
The Scotsman has become no better than the News of the Screws - at least that rag makes no pretense of being a REAL news source.

#59 - Ahhhh - see this is where we are only informed of the stories of people being turned away from hospitals because their credit card has expired or they have no insurance - perhaps the media could run a story there?... On the other hand I have been involved with the oil and gas industry and worked with guys from the States who have never told me otherwise and we have discussed this at length in many different countries. And to be honest I would rather have the governement managing my healthcare rather than having privately run companies compete (for profit) based on my health viability - the British system has been sorely mis-managed for many many years, that is the problem, and in my experience the Australian Medicare system far outways the UK one. I would rather pay my tax and my National Insurance / Medicare Levy and contribute to the social fabric of my society (whether UK or Australia or US) than just look after myself to be honest.

Obama's stated intentions in Iraq have varied over time. For a long time he said on his web-site that he wanted to stop combat operations in Iraq, but still maintain the many permanent bases built there and use them as a base to attack other countries in the region. I suspect that this is his intention.

However, maybe 4-5 months ago he changed his web-site to say that he wanted to withdraw all troops from Iraq within a 16-month period except for those needed to protect our embassy. The level of violence has been going down in Iraq. There are large numbers of Iraqi troops in place now. I doubt if there's any substantial difference between mcCain & Obama in how they'd handle Iraq in the future. I believe that Obama would keep troops in Iraq and occupy the permanent bases in order to maintain the US' ability to wage war on Iran and others in the region.

On other war-related issues I see little difference between McCain & Obama. Obama supports the war in Afghanistan. He supports expanding that war to Pakistan. He has engaged in hostile rhetoric towards Iran. I've never heard him speak against the war in Somalia, so I assume he supports it.

Obama sponsored some legislation that would restore some rights previously extended to US prisoners such as the guantanamo prisoners. However, I've not heard Obama speak against the torture and against the detentions without cause that are going on. Obama has said that he's a strong supporter of the 'war on terror', yet this is in reality a war of terror. It involves waging wars frivilously and without cause. It involves arresting people without evidence and torturing people as intimidation.

It gives me no comfort that many people around the world are as fooled by the US regime that rules us as the Americans are.

That is very reasonable what you said about how local & state politicians naturally try to get federal funds. However, I still don't buy it. Ron Paul has always voted 'no' on spending programs he considers frivilous & unconstitutional. We need politicians like that.

When Sarah Palin was made mayor of that small town she embarked upon a strategy of getting federal money. She put the town in debt as well, they have a significant debt burden whereas before she was mayor they had none. She also increased the size of government. She increased some taxes and cut some taxes, but on an overall basis the burden of government she imposed for her own ambitions was inconsistent with her rhetoric as a VP candidate now.

I'm tired of politicians who are sleazeballs. Facts are she goes for big government. When she ran for governor she supported the bridge to nowhere which was a huge boon-doggle from the beginning. She didn't care as long as we the taxpayers would pay for it. Contrary to what Mike implies she did not withdraw her support until after the US Congress withdrew its support. In other words she lied blatantly to the nation on this point last night.

I'm sick and tired of dishonest politicians who want to tax and spend like Sarah Palin.

I said it wasn't perfect. Does it need to be changed? Absolutely. But it does not need to be handed over to government. I have no problem with regulating the private sector to a degree, but total government control is out of the question. If the government over here has proven one thing in its history, it would be that it is inept and inefficient in running "programs". And we already pay quite a bit in "social" taxes. Its time to take those taxes away from the government and give them to someone that has a clue. Let the government legislate, but not implement. Leave that to the experts.

The total US medical industry funded by government sponsored insurance, private insurance and other sources occupies about 17% of US gdp. Every other modern country spends between 8 & 12% of its gdp on the medical industry.
