TROOPS involved in an operation in which the first British female soldier died in Afghanistan lacked vital equipment and were given inadequate training, a coroner has said.

Wiltshire and Swindon Coroner David Masters pledged to raise his concerns with the Ministry of Defence at the end of an inquest into the deaths of Corporal Sarah Bryant, 26, and three special forces comrades.

The coroner recorded unlawful killing verdicts for Cpl Bryant and special forces reservists Corporal Sean Robert Reeve, 28, Lance-Corporal Richard Larkin, 39, and Private Paul Stout, 31, who died when their Snatch Land Rover was hit by a roadside bomb in June 2008.

The six-day inquest into the deaths, held at Trowbridge Town Hall, heard a string of criticisms of their equipment and training.

Soldiers had not been shown how to use metal detectors in the UK due to an equipment shortage. Troops were forced to hunt out an expert at their Afghanistan base who passed on his knowledge.

An Ebex metal detector became available only four months into the deployment, until which point the soldiers had to scan the ground for improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Summing up yesterday, Mr Masters also highlighted the limitations of Snatch Land Rovers.

The inquest heard that the commander of the four soldiers had requested a replacement for their Snatch Land Rover but was refused due to shortages.

The vehicles could not cover soft ground and became stuck in a little water, which restricted the unit to driving along dangerous tracks.

Referring to the Ebex metal detectors, Mr Masters said: "There was a theatre-wide shortage of that piece of vital equipment."

Giving his verdict, he said: "I intend to submit a report to the Ministry of Defence which will take up a number of these issues which this inquest has canvassed."

Referring to the Ebex training, he said: "At the time leading up to these deaths that training … for this unit was inadequate."

He added: "Not only was there a shortage of equipment for training but also for use in the field."

He added: "The evidence has clearly shown that Snatch Land Rovers were not the preferred vehicle of choice for the evolving task upon which the PMT (Police Mentoring Team) were engaged."

Speaking after the inquest the families of Cpl Reeve and L-Cpl Larkin called for lessons to be learned.

In a statement the family said: "We hope that the MoD will heed the recommendations of the coroner and that by reason of the changes they make no other families will have to stand in the position in which we stand today."

The victims were in the Land Rover with a fifth soldier, the sole survivor, known as Soldier E.

Soldier E told the inquest last week the vehicle he and his fallen comrades were travelling in was "not adequate for the job". Their patrol had been instructed to provide vehicle checkpoints to help the police disrupt enemy lines of communication and recapture prisoners who had escaped from a prison in Kandahar.

The widespread use of Snatch Land Rovers by front-line troops has provoked criticism.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown was forced to defend the use of the vehicles last week when he gave evidence to the Iraq inquiry.

Armed forces minister Bill Rammell said it was "clear" that training provided at the time "could have been better".

He said: "The coroner has raised a number of serious questions in his verdict. We will look at these issues in detail and respond more fully to the coroner and the families as soon as possible."

He added: "In respect of Snatch, commanders need a variety of vehicles and we cannot always put our people in those that are most heavily armoured as these vehicles have restricted manoeuvrability and are not able to drive across the most difficult of terrain.

"We need this range of vehicles to enable us to fully engage with the local population to win over their hearts and minds in the battle against the Taleban."

What a team! PM Blair and Chancellor Brown sent the brave men and women of our armed forces on a fool's errand. And thereby demonstrated their contempt for the people of this country. There once was a word "treason". Does anyone remember what it means?

There would be no end to the equipment a soldier would want. Someone other than a soldier must decide what he or she gets. War is a constantly evolving situation and from day to day and operational needs change and most days soldiers have to go with the best they have got.

I repeat, the 8% increase in 'real' terms in MOD funding was based on an original 'peacetime' budget!!

It renders the figures meaningless when you are trying to fight two wars on that level of funding. How can people be so easily duped by this Labour Administration? Incredible!!

Vote for whomever you choose, the outcome will be the same yet again - but as to the training and equipment of our troops, ballocks to the idiots who keep saying the equipment and training are either deficient or non-existent. It is called media speak by those who don't have the first bloody clue about which they speak, but they don't truly have to know, just report things they way they do and stir up the codswallop. We have the finest ALL VOLUNTEER forces and they ARE trained and they ARE given the proper equipment for the job to hand. For those who want to complain, take up your post over there, then come back and speak a little more humbly.

Why is this Brown's fault? Special forces with a lack of knowledge? Surely the commander on the ground decides whether they are properly equipped to do the job. The British Army DO have the equipment - just not properly distributed where it should be. Very simple logistics. Should a nut-case major decide to send them out in shirt-tails and catapults they have to go. They cannot go on strike. Then I suppose that's Brown's fault too.
Blame those who sent them, and those who keep them there, and especially, those who voted these warmongers into office, and those who will vote again to keep them there.

Brown knows he lied to the Chilcot committee - every request he acceded to was a reactive one based on extreme needs. The basic budget was still at a peacetime level and entirely inadequate for 2 wars simultaneously. The generals were right and he as usual carefully supplied selected facts for the entirely supine committee he set up. He might as well have been questioned by 5 year olds, who might have made a better job. No follow-through no really hard questions, just plenty time fo him on waffle on the prepared drivel.

Correct funding may not have prevented these specific deaths but could have mitigated the overall numbers.

Every man and woman in this country who votes for labour is voting for the killing of our troops, you the voters have the power to stop this atrocity. But who to vote for? the tories and fib dems are no better they are all controlled by an organisation called Common Purpose, they are all members of a corrupt organisation trying to do what most countries in Europe have failed to do for hundreds of years, ruin Britain.

Blair and Brown together with Mandy and f**k-wit Darling are all membersof this elitist organisation all paid for by the taxpayer. Members such as Julia Middleton who runs a number of businesses and works for many many consulting and being paid a fortune, forget bankers bonuses, small change compared to what this vile lady is pulling in, meanwhile some young squaddie gets his or her legs blown of by the so called Taliban, total cr*p Brown and all the cronies are to be blamed and anyone who votes for these criminals only have themselves to blame, you are all being brainwashed by these people and organisations like the BBC are all in on the game.

Brown doesnt care how many soldiers DIE he really couldnt give a bill goats gruff, all he is interested in is his ego and how much money he has to retire on.

If I were voted prime minister today I would pull them all out, today not in a year not in five years, the order would go out today, come home and leave em to it. STOP MEDDLING in other peoples affaird Brown your a f**king disgrace. And these so called organisations such as third Sector and Common Purpose, the people running these would all be facing charges of treason, these people are destabalising the UK, undermining it destroying all our traditional values all in favour of a united European rule and the current encumbents are the main players in the game.

What this country needs is revolution.

The British Army protecting British interests, a move back to traditional values.

Follow your own advice. You are probably also bored by the almost daily reports of our soldiers swapping their 'mobile coffins' ( Snatch Landrovers built to resist petrol bombs in Ulster ) for the wooden version.

You have a point to anb extent, soldiers always want more kit to do the job, they even buy their own. A somebody on the sidelines with no experience but with with possibly some accounting qualification cannot say what is required to do the job however.

Soldiers also tend to carry some fairly hefty weight about so this must also be taken into consideration.

When all matters are looked at proper kit for the situation should be provided. This is a job where if things go wrong you do not get a telling off or sacked, you get killed.

I am in agreement with the poorly equiped part of the artical, and to an extent with the training partbut only to an extent, part time special forces are basicaly civilians and these people had had not been trained for what was coming towards them.

They however stood on the line an must be remebered for that.

could you imagine during WWII if we had parents, press, opposition politicians, etc constantly crying "ohh my son was killed in a Hurricane, he should have been given a Spitfire, or Ohhhh, the Enfield rifle isnt as good as the US M1, or ohh, the Bren Gun Carrier isnt up to the job and the German Panzers are decimating us."? Its a war, people get killed. Blaming the kit is demonstrative of how weak and superficial we have become.

Jock MacSprog,

finally, if we are just looking for 100% safety why not put each squaddie in their own personal M1 Abrahms Tank on each patrol ?

#24. That would be a great idea Jock. However, the bad guys would just increase the amount of ordnance they put in the hole and the Abrams would be gone too. These bad guys aren't laying mines in roadways. They are using all types of munitions, up to and including artillery shells. If you have ever seen some of these things go off, it is extreme overkill and I don't think there is any military vehicle that can withstand that blast. Sweeping for explosives is very slow. Many are found but the bad guys just go back in at night and plant more. What we need is to spend a lot more money on armed drones to patrol the routes at night and take out the bad guys planting these explosives.Drones seem to work well taking out targets at night in Pakistan. The U.S. uses them with much success. regards

"A somebody on the sidelines with no experience but with with possibly some accounting qualification cannot say what is required to do the job however."

Would that they had some accounting qualification, they are invariably only bean counters!!

If you are really serious, why not table the question under freedom of information as to how many qualified accountants there are in the Treasury? I'm sure you will be surprised how few, particularly in view of the £bns under their stewardship!!
