A WARTIME mentality is needed to fight climate change, with a new battle plan drawn up that includes building 40,000 more wind turbines and 20 nuclear power stations by the middle of the century, a new report claims.
In a hard-hitting statement, the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has warned that, using current tactics, targets have no chance of being met for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The UK's new Climate Change Act has "failed even before
it has started", according to the report Climate Change: Have We Lost the battle?

Instead, a new approach is needed – which uses all the resources and tactics available to go into battle against the problem, according to the report.

The body says that by using current strategies, the target to cut emissions by 80 per cent by 2050 will not be met until 2100 – by when there will be devastating consequences. Instead, fresh tactics are needed which will be a "monumental task", the scientists said – even eclipsing "the efforts and resourcing deployed during the Cold War".

IMechE's chief executive Stephen Tetlow said there was a need for a "wartime mentality", with ordinary people aware of how much electricity they were using in the same way they would have been aware of food consumption and blackouts in the Second World War.

The report calls for a new 100-year "battle plan", which includes:

• Building 16 nuclear power stations by 2030 and four more by 2050. Nine are planned, with none in Scotland.

• Putting up 27,000 new wind turbines by 2030 and another 13,000 by 2050. Currently, there are 2,600 turbines in operation across the UK.

• Constructing 100,000 "artificial trees" by 2050 to absorb emissions – many in the North Sea.

• Using biomass, solar, waste, tidal, wave and hydro facilities on a massive scale.

• Creating a Department of Energy and Climate Security with sole responsibility for the new strategy.

Lead author Dr Tim Fox, head of environment and climate change at IMechE, said: "The Institution believes it's time to go to war on climate change. It's about to attack and it's time to defend ourselves and fight back."

But a Department of Energy and Climate Change spokesman said: "IMechE's can't-do, won't-do attitude is sending out a defeatist message ahead of the crucial climate change talks in Copenhagen.

"If we act now, we can not only beat climate change but gain from green benefits in terms of jobs and investment from going low-carbon. That's what our transition plan is doing, so it's a shame the Institute is not embracing the vast opportunities available for engineers in the shift to a low-carbon economy."

What a load of rubbish.

What a surprise: the Institute of Mechanical Engineers requires.........more mechanical engineering. Yup, millions of wind turbines and tens of nuclea power stations. And of course it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference as China and India pump trillions of tons of emmissions from thousands of brown coal power plants.

Nice try guys! Why not? Just about every single interest group has a good reason why the tax payer should pour billions of dollars into their coffers - all to save the World from "devestating climate change" of course.

China is greening its energy production faster than any country in the west.

We should be embracing opportunities to improve the quality of the atmosphere.

biggy shackleton, that's a bit rich, when you come from a state that, these days, eschews new hydro schemes. and your statement re China is a falsehood.
The rate of construction of coal-fired power stations in China is predicted to continue for 25 years and more - subjecting us to 100% of CO2 emissions from these power stations well past 2060 - and well in excess of the 30% limit set for 2050.

China is now the biggest source of CO2 emissions in the world and by 2030 China's CO2 emissions from burning coal are predicted to be 45% of the world's total - already 334% above the limit for the whole world by 2050 - and the Copenhagen Agreement is not going to prevent this.

As usual a bunch of egotistical brothers of deception are attempting to introduce plans to alter the course of nature and planning to tax us for their troubles in doing so.
Short of moving Earth to another location in space where cosmic storms don’t exist, we will always feel the effects of climate change or “natural atmospheric metamorphosis”.
There is no such thing as dangerous carbon emissions, but if you are a scientist looking to make a living you need funding in order to feed your family, so once you find a theory you never want to lose it, thus deceit for self gratification and collusion with governments who are planning on introducing new taxes on your theoretical falsehood become part of your everyday life.
Embrace Natural Atmospheric Metamorphosis, it is has been around for a billions of years and will be here for another few billion years.

The whole "Blitz Spirit" thing is a myth anyway. Rather than the all chums, mucking in attitude it's portrayed as - crime soared, organised crime started to appear in London and the period is generally regarded by historians as when people first stopped treating authority figures (police, etc) with respect.

Here is the good news: The UK's new Climate Change Act has failed even before has started.

Here is the bad news: The once credible Institute of Mechanical Engineers has declared that we can “beat climate change”.

I think mechanical engineers should stick to building bridges which last more than a few decades and leave any warbling on global warming to the Monster Raving Green Loonies.

Just as we start to emerge from an enormous banking crisis withe mother and father of all debts we get this drivel foisted upon us again. Let's face it the insane "targets" set by people who probably can't get through their 10 times table would imply as this IMechE rep says an enormous pouring of funds and effort into tackling an ephemeral phenomomenon which occurs naturally and since temperatures haven't changed significantly in the last decade and not many polar bears are dead we should be concentrating on reviving our fortunes and dumping Brown and co. who are the biggest perpetrators of waste ever seen in the UK. Still it may be a logical extension of another group with a vested interest like scientists taking the opportunity to grab funds. Strange how it's always taxpayer funded. If these guys had to put their own money where their mouths are it would be a different story. The ultimate engineering test!

Any one notice that it has been getting darker earlier this year?
An indication of a wobble that the earth makes at times. It is not man made but perfectly natural and it effects our climate.
How do we stop the earth wobbling? We can't.
As long as people are led to believe any climate change is man made then the powers that be will tax and tax and tax.
I do agree t hat we should stop pollution as much as possible but not because of climate change.

This brings great shame on the IMechE.

Is it due to a few infiltrators doing their Gramscian duty by getting on to some committee or other? Or has the virus of Climate Munnchausen Syndrome infected some existing worthies?

Anyone here know?

Roll on Copenhagen, and it's spectacular failure. I am sick to death of hearing and reading propaganda and drivel on mythical, man-made climate change.

"I think mechanical engineers should stick to building bridges...warbling on global warming to the Monster Raving Green Loonies."

Says it all really. I prefer bridges to be built by CIVIL engineers and to heed the evidence on climate change from oceanographers, ecologists, meteorologists, chemists, physicists and a myriad of other scientists.

Who gives a stuff about "climate change"? The real issue here is the provision of energy. At last they are planning to build nuclear reactors, which is something they should have done 10 years ago.

It's about time Scotland followed the example set by England instead of planning to be a "world leader" in having the return of black-outs and soaring energy prices.

I agree that we should be on a 'war footing' in tackling the fast approaching deficiency in power supply. But for someone who claims to be a mechanical engineer, to promote wind turbines as an efficient source of power? Words fail even me! If we were tackling this properly we would have spent large amounts of money on water driven turbines. An old saying - Nobody ever built a windmill where they could build a water mill. It should still hold true!

Yet another self serving group looking for financial reward (building sea defences etc) trying to cash in on the global warming bonanza!!
Why don't these people take a genuine engineering stance - like building more power stations??
Since when did meachanical engineers know anything about our climate - everyone's an expert these days, even the clergy!!
Talk about selling your soul to the devil??

Notice how 'Man Made Global Warming' has subtly changed in the media to 'Climate Change'??

I call it 'Man Made-UP Global Warming' (MMuGW), and so do the Climatologists at the Climate Research Unit - since they've been hacked and found out!

We need to put an end to this CC or MMuGW nonsense NOW!
