Shock tactics in new drive to stop youths carrying knives

SHOCKING images of horrific real-life knife wounds feature in a new Government advertising campaign launched today.
Pictures of exposed intestines, gangrenous limbs and a man with a knife and screwdriver sticking out of his chest will form part of the Home Office's £3 million "viral" internet campaign.

The images – taken from a medical photo library – will appear as slides being used to illustrate a fictional medical lecture.

A second advert shows a CCTV reconstruction of a stabbing on a shopping street.

The adverts will target young people through social networking websites like Bebo and on mobile phones.

The campaign, which ministers hope will shock young people out of carrying knives, has been devised by teenagers for teenagers. One of those who worked on the project, Khadijah Murchison, 18, from Bristol, said: "To share our experiences with each other and come up with ideas and adverts that will help reduce knife crime was great.

Home Office minister Vernon Coaker said: "I am in no doubt about the importance of tackling knife crime and this is even starker following recent tragic events."

For a wonderful moment I thought the headline, 'Shock tactics' would advise us that greater use was to be made of the handy little taser device.
The prime function of the police service is to prevent crime. What better way than using a taser to zap neds on sight. Or anyone looking slightly nedish?

So I now have to suffer sickening images in TV etc because a few morons choose to break the law. As usual the politicians have got it wrong again. Target the ones who break the law and leave the rest of us out of it for christs sake!

The only shock strong enough to stop knife crime is severe sentancing. Too many think of jail as a badge of honour. Make prisons like the old work houses and thugs will think twice about being sent there. No fancy food no TV no PC's just hard labour and small cells with no personal items. Then we will find out how hard these guys( and girls ) really are.

The best way to deal with someone assaulting you with a knife is to shoot them. Legalise handgun carry now!

Fernando,

At least with a knife, they have to get close to you before they can do you any harm. With a handgun they don't.

"To share our experiences with each other and come up with ideas and adverts that will help reduce knife crime was great." I think this statement by one of those who worked on the project captures perfectly the reaction of the viewers the Project is aimed at. Just another horror film that will desensitise them from the true horror of such maiming.
Surely the Home Office's £3 million "viral" internet campaign would be better spent rehabilitating those caught in possession of stabbing and shooting weapons.

Sorry, maybe I've missed something, but what is wrong with catch the little b@stards and give them a stiff jail sentence.

What a great idea! Wait a minute though, did anyone think to find out if the little potential stabbers out there would think such images were horrific or cool?
