DAME Joan Bakewell, one of Britain's leading women broadcasters, was honoured by the Queen yesterday.
The presenter, 75, dubbed "the thinking man's crumpet" by the comedian Frank Muir in the 1960s, receives the damehood for a career spanning more than 40 years.

It's high time this ridiculous business stopped. these honours are handed out like sweets now and, if they still must be given, should only be awarded to those who have done something really worthwhile to benefit mankind.
