Pasta la vista as world wheat shortages bite

SUMMER evenings spent enjoying a plate of tagliatelle and a glass of wine are about to become a lot more expensive following warnings that supplies of pasta to the UK could run short over the next few months.
A report from the trade magazine The Grocer says the looming pasta crisis is the result of Italian farmers increasingly growing durum wheat for biofuel production rather than food.

The report says the price of durum wheat is two-and-a-half-times
higher than June last year as supplies have tightened, forcing some suppliers to cease pasta production because they are unable to pass on the soaring cost of raw materials to customers and stay viable.

Last week, chilled-foods manufacturer Bakkavör announced it was closing its pasta plant in Scunthorpe, with the loss of more than 100 jobs, because of rises in the cost of raw materials.

Nigel Singh, UK representative for pasta giant Pasta Lensi, told The Grocer that cost pressures were forcing manufacturers in Italy and the UK to cease production.

He said: "The price of durum wheat has leapt 250 per cent since June last year, but a 500g pack of pasta has only increased by 31p to 61p. That's 100 per cent. For farmers, manufacturers and retailers to make a fair income, a 500g pack should sell for 90p."

Last September, Italians went on a one-day "pasta strike" in protest at price rises of over 20 per cent for spaghetti and fettuccine.

The EU says 10 per cent of transport fuel must come from biofuels by 2020. But the industry has been blamed for dramatic rises in the price of food around the world.

James Withers, deputy chief executive of NFU Scotland, said: "We have more people in the world to be fed, while land is lost through drought and flooding caused by climate change and targets to be met for biofuels.

"There is a 'perfect storm' situation building up which will make food security an issue for the first time since rationing during the Second World War."

The respected Journal SCIENCE recently published "Use of U.S. Croplands for Biofuels Increases Greenhouse Gases Through Emissions from Land Use Change", which found that using any currently produced biofuel was far worse for the environment than using ordinary gasoline and actually speeds global warming. Biofuel production is shrinking the human food supply, causing water shortages, and accelerating topsoil erosion which leads to desertification of the planet. The only biofuels that hold promise are biofuels made from algae or garbage. Unfortunately, those two technologies are still experimental and unproven.

Bio Fuel is a red herring.
We need oil for--- fertilizer, for pesticide, transport, farming machinery, and presses and fractionation. This energy must be deducted from the fuel + labour before it reaches the consumer. The farming system in the USA depends on cheap oil. Take this out of the equation and the price goes through the roof.
Prices will rise in the future without Bio Fuel due to increased demand in India, China and other up and coming economies; a big culprit in changing food habits are the Fast Food outlets.

The chart in the print edition says:-

' 14th. Century - when popularity of pasta soared as it was transported to the New World by ship'

What the hell is this statement meant to be telling us?

The answer is to use other low input crops for biofuels or use farm and forestry waste - cereals prove the principle but they are too valuable and intensievin their needs for biofuels...

Will anyone ever get it

Dudes,

Its all about money. and nothing else
And those who have the money don't care nor will they be affected.

So the ITIES are growing grain to feed the ICE (internal combustion engine) so are us Yanks .

While (whilst) the 1 billion other poverty residents on this planet starve.

And do we care ..Hell no.

Since wheat is a latecomer cereal for Scotland in comparison to Oats, many Scots suffer from diseases due to the high level of wheat consumption.

Soon the Chinese will start having difficulty with Western foods like dairy products as their digestive system don't have the mechanisms to deal with these new foods.
It takes about 800 years for a human to be acquainted and able to absorb them.

#7 Nail on head. If there was a fuel problem at all - or a CO2 one.

Hemp - grows anywhere with zero care - it even sequesters CO2 like a demon if we needed it to but it seems that that is the last thing we need, or want, as in a utopia CO2 levels would be about three times what they are today - delivering 20% to 40% increases in plant growth all over the planet. Which we will need because it will get colder soon.

This touches a nerve:

And here is a paper to be delivered in March:

Safest bet? Both of the above will get attacked viciously. Won't stop it getting cold though ;-)

Keep your eyes closed your ears shut and your mouth open that way you need not worry about Accelerated Climate Change and continue to lose the opurtunity to do something cheap, easy, and save yourself others and the planet.
YOU WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO FIND YOUR CAR!!!!
