No Dr Who autographs in Tennant's new role

DIE-HARD Doctor Who fans have been banned from taking sci-fi merchandise to the stage door to be autographed by David Tennant when he treads the boards as Hamlet.
The Bathgate-born actor, 37, will take the role in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production at Stratford-upon-Avon. Director Gregory Doran says fans have already been arriving at the theatre with bags of Doctor Who merchandise to be autographed.

The RSC has now reportedly laid down the law and insisted that only its own memorabilia will be signed by Tennant. A spokesman said: "It is very flattering that there is so much interest in this production, but the sheer volume of requests means that we need to set some limits which will be as fair as possible for everyone."

I think this is a great idea, and I applaud the RSC for putting this rule into effect.

David and Patrick are there to perform in Hamlet. The focus should rightfully shift to their current project, and fans should respect that. Cheers to the RSC for trying to mitigate the hysteria that's sure to surround these actors as they embark on the summer season.

Totally agree with you, Tara. I'm 100% behind the RSC on this one. Joe Smith of Moscow, you say they're behaving like sea-monsters, but don't you think it's rather insulting to David Tennant and Patrick Stewart to be asked to autograph Dr Who / Star Trek merchandise, when they're performing in one of the greatest plays ever written? Do those fans who expect them to realise how priveleged they are to actually see that performance? My sister and I are visiting London in January and we are desperately hoping that we can get tickets. Not because we're Dr Who fans, but because it would be such a thrill to see both actors performing such iconic roles. Stick to your guns, RSC - the play's the thing, after all. :)

No, I don't. The RSC are making money off the back of Dr Who and Jean-Luc's fame. Where did they get their fame from - hmm, let me think. If they were insulted by being asked for an autograph, they're in the wrong job.

Imagine if The RSC had John Lennon and Paul McCartney in the same production, as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The RSC would be like "YEH BUT YOUS'RE NO SIGNING ANY BEATLES RECORDS".

The RSC are kidding themselves if they don't realise the sell-out performances are due to mothers, made to watch Doctor Who with the kiddies and now very interested for other reasons.

Apparently the tickets are selling for well over face value on eBay. It is going to be like going to the Chippendales with the sound of panting hormones. They better waterproof the seats.

Well, I can't speak for everyone else going to see this play but for myself, I would be going to see an RSC production of Hamlet regardless of who was in the lead role.

And for your information, Joe Smith, David Tennant was already quite well known before he took on Doctor Who - both in theatre and in television. So why should he be forced to sign Who stuff when he's doing something completely unrelated?

#6 - David Tennant wasn't a household name before he took the Galifray birth certificate. you know it, and I know it. Even fans of Duck Patrol know it. So don't be simultaneously pedantic and disingenuous - it's tiresome.

Err, nobody's forcing him. Anyway, if they did he could subdue them with a laser gun or something.

Anyway, I'm not going back to this thread, Amethyst71, but I hope you have an enjoyable trip to the UK to see Hamlet, even if Tennant is beset by intergalactic autograph hunters ;-)
