MEMBERS of Parliament will still be able to have their second homes kitted out by taxpayers, despite attempts to curb costly furnishings.
The House of Commons yesterday supported an attempt to abolish the controversial "John Lewis list", which gave MPs spending guidelines aligned to the department store's goods.

MPs could previously spend any amount of their £24,000 additional-cost
allowance on furnishings, including up to £10,000 for a kitchen, £6,000 for a bathroom, plasma televisions and other furniture.

But yesterday MPs voted to accept a Labour amendment, led by Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, to cap the spending on furnishings to 10 per cent of the additional-cost allowance – at £2,400 a year. A Conservative attempt to ban any claims for furniture was defeated.

The Tories said the new cap did not go far enough and Theresa May, the shadow leader of the House, accused the government of replacing the "John Lewis list" with an "Ikea list".

MPs also backed greater scrutiny of their expenses. But checks by the National Audit Office on internal procedures fall far short of the recommendation that MPs should be individually audited.

Meanwhile, the Tories published the claims of all their MPs, including Sir Nicholas and Ann Winterton, Christopher Chope, Sir Paul Beresford and Sir John Stanley. All MPs' claims will be published by the Commons authorities later this year.

When are we going to see the expense claims by the Former MP from Glasgow East? Thats what the public wants to know. Are the rumours true about him ripping ofF the taxpayers for 500,000 pounds while his constituents wallow in poverty?

KampungHighlander,

Some clarification if you please.

Do you want them to total up all his expenses claims for the last thirty years and to include every other payment he has received from Westmonster?. Should his cushy pension in the millions be included, and whilst we are on the matter of his income ,do we include his Brown Envelope Money as well?.

My god man, we are talking about millions here. Dont forget that most of the claims over the last thirty years were/are protected by the Westmonster Club President of Corruption, Labours own Michael Martin. You know the guy who rules in favour of Labour every time the SNP MPs ask for the information.

Taxi for Mrs Martin's shopping seems to ring a bell.

With the public being told not to expect pay rises above inflation, and prices shooting up everywhere ... how gratifying to see that the trough is still available to politicians to slake from.

Not for them the tightening of the belt of necessity. Not for them, the need to switch to shopping in FarmFoods and Lidl instead of Tesco or Waitrose.

We need a revolution .... now! And I am on the side of Anarchy!

Looking at Former Glasgow East MP David Marshall's expenses which were all claimed while working from the front room of his house and which totalled over £500,000 it struck me that we are perhaps missing an opportunity here.

With this level of spend it must be some house. Could not the Tourist Board organise guided tours round the one stately home in Glasgow East?

Why can`t the parasites put up in a travel lodge like the rest of us, that would save millions. I would certainly make sure they didn`t sell our assets on for ther own good.

So if we (the taxpayer) pay for MP's second homes, furnishing them, expenses (including tea, coffee etc.), travelling expenses and goodness knows what else, can anyone tell me what they spend their very generous wages on?

I believe that the cost of rent boys and hookers is now very expensive in London and I believe people from political elite spend a vast amount on this while they are in the Westminster Village. Allegedly

Could somebody please tell me why an MP needs a PLASM TV?

Won't a lesser expensive one do for these pigs at the trough?

It is just sheer greed and immorality.

With the current climate of accountability in politics - the scoundrels are getting out or trying to legitimize their swindling ways !

#9. Brown keeps trying to tell us that they share our pain.

On the basis that they shaft us at every turn I suppose it is only fair that they should employ the services of these, "rent boys," in a sharing way of course.

Gordon clearly knows he's getting the boot but this makes him look good otherwise he'd be in favour of the status quo.

#11 TimW1234 - MP's need a Plasma TV (and Sky TV as well of course) to keep upsides with the benefit recipients, who have been so generously provided to keep them voting Laboured. I'm using the past tense there deliberately since so many have now twigged that Broon's MP's are at the shenanigans the whole time.
