PURPLE cancer-fighting tomatoes have been genetically engineered by British scientists.
The fruits, which resemble tomato-like plums, have already been shown to extend the lives of cancer-prone mice.

Scientists say they could be on sale within three years – but probably not in the UK because of strict European rules about geneticall
y modified food.

Researchers in Norwich made the breakthrough by inserting two genes from a garden flower into normal tomatoes.

The snapdragon genes caused the fruit to produce high levels of anthocyanins, chemicals that give blackberries and blueberries their deep purple colour.

Research suggests the compounds protect against certain cancers as well as heart disease and age-related degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's.

They may also combat inflammation, improve vision and hinder obesity and diabetes.

The skin and the flesh of the tomatoes are an intense, deep purple colour.

Scientists mixed powder from freeze-dried purple tomatoes into the food of mice lacking an essential anti-cancer gene.

Normally, the mice would be expected to quickly develop cancer and die.

But animals given the genetically modified tomato supplement lived significantly longer, the scientists reported in the journal Nature Biotechnology.

There is little point in telling the public about this as the PC Brigade, trendy-lefties and tree-huggers will stop it being sold to the public as it is a "Frankenstein food".

In any event, the current Stalinist, totalitarian, control freak government doesn't believe in allowing people any freedom of choice.

We don't want GM foods here because the luddites keep telling us... we don't want GM foods here. The main reason behind this 'scare' is to protect the organic food industry which flourishes in an atmosphere of media ignorance and greenie misinformation. Melchett, Prince Charles and all the other organic nuts stand to lose millions if GM crops were introduced here. It was never about protecting biodiversity and human health. Always follow the money.

Purple tomatoes have been with us for years ... they are called Cherokee tomatoes and are enriched with Anthocynins and Lycopene, both antioxidants, believed to protect the human body from oxidative damage that may lead to heart disease, cancer and ageing.

They are quite sweet but very good for you.

And humans have been modifying food since we first started depending on it! GM is just another tag for what we've been doing for centuries. The difference is that we cn now do it on a molecular level and attempt to grow bigger and better, to feed more people in place of drought, of severe floods and to combat poverty!

As a botanist, I implore you to stop burying your heads in the sand and just help to keep us on our toes so that we are doing it for all the right reasons!

boywonder we don't need modified food - you say the tomatoes are good for you...why not eat the food that is already available...the blueberry.. as for feeding the people in the drought areas etc..there is more than enough food to feed them but political priorities are else where..

perhaps they can genetically engineer some food for the bankers across the globe to make them not so greedy !!!!!!!!!! i don't know if i'll try the tomato if offered, they'll probably sneak it in other foods though.
