PEOPLE who suffer from acne are less likely to take exercise or excel at physical games, sports scientists have found.
A study by Bath University says those with acne tend to avoid sport out of shyness or anxiety about their skin.

The study, in the Journal of Health Psychology, involved 50 adults recruited from an acne support group.

Men and women with acne who saw their skin problem as negative had lower self-esteem and a poorer quality of life.

The researchers claim "dermatological social anxiety" is often overlooked in studies on motivation for sport and exercise.

Dr Martyn Standage, lecturer in the university's School for Health, said:

"Fear of having one's skin evaluated by others has implications for physical and social well-being."
