MIXU PAATELAINEN has identified the players he believes can give his side the edge in the battle for a UEFA Cup place next season – but admitted he'll have to play a waiting game to find out if he's been successful in bids to bring them to Easter Road.
The Hibs manager has spent the last couple of months drawing up a final list of targets and is hoping that a number of them will be in place before his side kick-off their new season in the Intertoto Cup next month.

However, with the majority of players, managers and agents currently enjoying a few weeks break at the end of the season, Paatelainen knows that he faces a race against time to get his players in place before Hibs return to action.

Paatelainen, who replaced John Collins as Hibs manager back in January, said: "I am working away and am trying to make things happen and to strengthen the side.

"Obviously we have been looking at the situation for some time but I doubt anything will happen over the next week or two because a lot of players are on holiday at the moment.

"It's just something that we have to deal with and the situation is the same for every other club but we will keep working on it."

And Paatelainen revealed that he is looking for versatility in any new signings, adding: "It's not all about the number of players that you bring in. If they can play in a couple of roles than that's all the better for us.

"The most important thing is that we make sure every area of the pitch has cover."

Meanwhile, Paatelainen admitted that there was nothing he could have said or done to keep Guillaume Beuzelin at Easter

Totally agree, we seem to be losing all our flair players who like to play football and replacing them with as you say scottish journeyman. Hopefully he can find some players with some quality, these journeymen are also blocking youngsters getting there chance in the 1st team.

Boozy will only be a loss to Edinburgh's night clubs.
Perhaps he'd like to take Rob Jones for company tho'.

What about paying a fair wage ? Sure that would have done the trick...

I think it sad that the height of their ambition is Uefa Cup, surely they should be thinking about winning the league.

Makes you wonder is there only ever going to be Celtic and Rangers considered good enough to win the SPL.

Once more the morons crawl out to slag off a class player that we are losing. Replacement... no problem, we have Rankin. We have already replaced Benji with Nish so we know that we're not looking for footballers then.

Stanton 4. Quite right.

I really have my doubts about Mixus ability to pick a team. He seems to be a throwback to a previous era. ie the eighties when the team was stuffed full of journeyman who had very little to contribute except their presence on the pitch. He can't make obvious substitions.

The last game against M'Well was a good example. Late on in the game he brought Rankin on. What did he learn...nothing. Donaldson and Benji were on the bench but no game for them. What's he thinking about?

little wullie hibs didnt sign anyone from nitten, what they did was give him a trial unlike your owner telling your various managers your taking the player or else , why dont you brain dead jambos face facts your team IS in debt of 36m and rising with no chance of survival unless you sell up and go play at the meadows

#8 I've been saying that for years. The "we can never beat the Old Firm for the league" attitude is probably worth about 30 points each per season to the OF. Most of the smaller teams are beaten before the game starts. Thanfully wins in Glasgow are a little more frequent than they used to be but the mindset of Scottish clubs needs to change.

Agree that there are doubts about Mixu's chosen style of play and the quality of the players brought in. I suppose he has to be given the benefit of the doubt until we're into next season and he has his 'own' team.

I hope that I am pleasantly surprised.

21

Iain Bhern,

#14, The way I see it is this. If you don't have the ambition to finish first then there's little point even competing. Fair enough for a club that's just been promoted, all they want to do is find their feet and consolidate in the first year. Thereafter they and every other team in the league should have the mindset that nothing less than aiming for the championship is good enough. Once it's obvious you're not going to win it, then and only then, do you think about second or third spot or at the very least the highest position you can achieve.

Aye, Barred, did they not eventually up sticks and move to lithuania after they sold their old stadium to Cala. I think it used to be where that Romanov Heights development is now.
I think they are now a feeder club for Kaunas who are the Big Team over there.Amazing how the beLIEvers didn't see it coming. But then I suppose "There's non so blind as those who don't want to see!!!"

17 Hope I'm wrong, but we heard the same thing from John Collns & TM before him, we ended up waiting until they got better offers elsewhere & all we got was the dross that was left behind.
26

Who's it gonna be? ,

03/06/2008 13:29:53
I think that the players in every club on the first day of the season do have that ambition to win and the feeling that they can do it- until they play against the same players that they met last season and realise that they are still not as good. Motivation has to be a big part of it- and at the end of the day if you are playing against someone who will rake in an extra hundred grand + a year for appearences/goals/win bonuses on top of the extra thousands per week base pay- you are going to reach a point where you say 'I would'nt mind some of action- what am I doing knocking my pan in here?'. Also, if you have 60000 fans encouraging you to win as opposed to 10 or 15thousand you are going to run a bit faster and harder to try and impress.
Footballers are only human as well. And footballers in business can appear to be less so...
27

Eighteen Seventy-Four,

03/06/2008 13:39:11
21. Agree completely, although that attitude in modern day Scotland seems to be severely lacking.

28

Iain Bhern,

03/06/2008 13:54:43
#27, well there's the rub. When Vlad came in we thought that ambition was there and for 10 weeks or so it was. Everything was looking good and even though Burley went you still managed second place. The best any club outside the Old Firm had done for a long time. Then it all started going horribly wrong. I still can't fathom just what Vlad thought he was doing and I daresay lots of jambos wonder too. Perhaps Vlad should have paid heed to an old engineering maxim, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" It wasn't broke, until he fixed it by getting rid of Burley!

stanton4,

I do agree with the lack of ambition part, but even I, who am vehemently anti-petrie, accept that there is a limit to what you can do, and just as importantly, if you are going to gamble and go for it, then it has to be done at the right time.

I am in no sense slagging HoMoFc, but they threw millions at it, and by some measures it worked ( Cup ) but they completely overdid it and now they are paying for it. Some were worth the money they paid out to them every week, but for the most part they overpaid average players.

Thta model only works by having a benefactor that constantly pumps money into the club. Remember tthat even before Vlad came along Hearts had overextended themselves ...they were already insolvent. It has only got worse and I fear ....( naw I dinnae)... that it will get even worse before it gets better. JT ST holders in my office are openly talking about what happens when they go out the box.

The spare ribs on the other hand, had acquired a crop of players the likes of which has never been seen at ER. IMO, that was the time to gamble and invest as any good businessman would. Invest by holding on to them by paying them more on the basis that they will get even more in transfer fees in the future.. ... by harvesting the talent by ( for example ) selling only one of them each year.

We have now moved on a whole team, and have a lovely bank balance to show for it, but have been left with a load of dross. Not only is it lack of ambition but I would call it mismanagement. (again)

Having agreed about a lack of ambition, what I am not going to do is take that cr4p from an old firm fan. It is the old firm that are the principal cause of the appalling state of scottish football.

Spot on IMO mate.

The team we have today is a mere shadow of the one Mowbray built. That really hurts as a supporter and no black figures on a balance sheet will make me any happier about it.

I fear it could take a very long time for us to develop another team of the sam kind & lets be brutally honest here, IF the board had taken a chance we could have mad at least one serious challenge for the title, We knew it, the yamz knew it, the OF knew it, every one knew it except for Petir & STF who believed that balancing the books was the most important thing to the club.

Hearts have reduced their debt, but only because of Gordon's sale. Their wage bill is about £12.5M according to reports, which is ridiculous for a team Hearts' size. Hearts are struggling to break even never mind reduce their debt. And they don't have any more Gordons to sell .

Ajax of Amsterdam will not be in the Champions League next season despite finishing 2nd in their league.
Seems only 1st automatically qualify and there is a play-off for the other place.
This should be adopted here, listen for the ugly sisters howls.

It will be interesting to see how Mixu fares in the transfer market, and if he's given sufficient funds to significantly strengthen the squad, never mind just the first team.Somehow I very much doubt it,but I wouldn't attach too much blame to Mixu unless he brings in even worse players than some of the ones we have at the moment, or carries on where he left off last season with some curious tactical decisions. He got a lot of credit for raising the team a bit after the departure of John Collins, but to be honest, anything would have been an improvement, so I'll hold fire on whether he can really make a mark in the SPL till the end of next season. Although it may be a pipe dream, if we were able to bring Riordan back I couldn't think of a better way of indicating that the club mean business. But I won't hold my breath over that one!

Not sure about bringing Riordan back, kid can play but he left for a reason. If he comes back it would only be to try and re-ignite his career so he can move on again. I feel he still thinks he's too good for Hibs.

Selling players to clear debt is an unfortunate reality in the current SPL. However, what gets me is the volume which Hibs have sold over the last few years. They should have a policy of working to only lose one quality player per year.

Brown, Thomson, Riordan, Whittaker, O'Connor, Sproule, Beuzzy, Killen, Caldwell, Murphy,Murray all over about 3 years. Imagine if we had only lost three of these!

Good points you are making there, and I agree with most of them definitely. In the bigger picture however,I have to wonder when we will ever NOT be a selling club.Getting the debt down to zero is fine, but it's still a circle, isn't it? I mean when we get down to zero, are we eventually going to spend more money on good players, or are the board just going to carry on as they are just now, filling the coffers but not investing too much in the team? Whether we reach zero debt next week,or in 10 years time,we will have to spend money on players, more than what we are spending just now,so zero debt isn't going to last long whatever way you look at it,unless we are actually not going to spend any money on the team until we have a huge profit at our disposal, and that sure as hell aint going to happen if we're playing in the first division. The amount of quality players we have is far less than it was even a couple of years ago,it might get to the stage that we just can't afford to lose the 1 or 2 good ones we do have left. Still,it could be so much worse,we could have approx.£40 million debt with another £51 million soon to appear on top of that, and 3rd Division football beckoning for the newly formed Hearts AFC in 3 years time!
