MANCHESTER City snatched a place in the Uefa Cup quarter-finals last night despite a dramatic late collapse in Aalborg.
Protecting a 2-0 lead from the first leg, City were within five minutes of a place in the last eight but the Danes fought back with goals from Luton Shelton and Michael Jakobsen. But goalkeeper Shay Given spared City's blushes by saving from Thomas Augustinussen and Shelton in a 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory.

Holders Zenit St Petersburg could not overhaul a 2-0 first-leg deficit, crashing out 2-1 on aggregate to Udinese. Zenit captain Anatoliy Tymoschuk scored the only goal of the game.

Dynamo Kiev emerged victorious in the all-Ukrainian clash with Metalist Kharkiv, an own goal from Andriy Berezovchuk meaning they went through on away goals courtesy of a 3-2 defeat.

Shakhtar Donetsk ensured a second Ukrainian side in the quarters as they completed victory over CSKA Moscow.

Hamburg came from behind to knock Galatasaray out, winning 3-2 at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium, while

Guillaume Hoarau scored an 80th-minute winner as Paris St Germain claimed a 1-0 victory at Braga.

Many a laptop such as bileous leetchie of the bun tore into Celtic with savage critisicm for losing 2v1 in Aalborg as though they were the equivalent of Stenhousemuir.

This team of amateurs managed a draw at old trafford and came within an ace of eliminating gazillion pound man city.

And let's not forget that at Celtic Park, we missed a penalty and, as replays showed, had a perfectly good goal chopped off. On top of that, our late capitulation in Aalborg was a bit on the freaky side.

However, it seems pretty clear that they can hold their own with most European clubs outside the likes of EPL top 4.

Interesting to see Paris St Germain going through.
They are sitting 2nd with Marseille one point behind Lyon in the French league. After 2 years Le Guen has got them playing footie again. Lessons to be learned....patience a virtue

I don't think you can dismiss any team as 'cr'ap' in the champions league, particularly one that goes onto the last 16 of UEFA only to be eliminated on penalties.

In fact, I don't think you can even dismiss as 'cr'ap' any team that makes it to the third round qualifiers for the group stage as 'cr'ap'...any team that makes it to that stage has to be taken seriously.

What I will give you is that there are one or two 'cr'ap' teams that make the second round qualifiers, but they are invariably emiminated at that stage. Last year, I thought that Kaunas were one such team, but it transpired that there was a team even more 'cr'ap' than them.

I think PLG has again shown that he is one of the best managers in Europe. It seems that he needs a bit of time to adjust to a new job, but chairman who have the patience to grant him that space will reap the rewards.

He's in with a shout of a french league and UEFA Cup double and that's a strong position to be in at this stage of the season.

It all came down to a showdown between ferguson and PLG, and the way things have gone this season, it's pretty clear that minty backed the wrong horse.
It seems that telling players to brush up on their diet and cutting back on the bevy was a step too far doon govan way.
