Published Date: 25 March 2008
MORE people are successfully quitting smoking in the Lothians, despite a fall nationally, new figures revealed today.
The statistics were released the day before the second anniversary of the ban on smoking in public places coming into effect.

They show there has been a slight rise in the number of smokers quitting in the Lothians last year, compared to a fall ac
ross the whole of Scotland. The number of smokers who had successfully quit a month later rose from 34 per cent to 40 per cent.

The figures are based on information from the national smoking cessation database. They show January was the most popular month for deciding to quit last year.

NHS Lothian has introduced a wide range of measures to help people quit, including more special smoking advisors in hospitals and offering one-to-one sessions. Smokers are also offered support from their GPs and local pharmacies.

In the Lothians, smoking is responsible for around 1500 deaths every year, and almost 9000 people are admitted with smoking-related illnesses. Treating those patients costs NHS Lothian £ 22.6 million a year.

The new figures show 3,748 smokers tried to give up in the Lothians, or 2.7 per cent of all smokers. Of these, 40 per cent said they had successfully quit after a month.

This is a rise of about 1 per cent on last year's figure of 3717. But health experts say last year's figure was exceptionally high as a result of the smoking ban, and the continued rise is "encouraging news".

This compares to 3.9 per cent of smokers who attempted to quit the habit in Scotland as a whole. This figure has fallen from 4.4 per cent in 2006.

A spokeswoman for ISD, which published the report, said: "There was a very distinct peak in March 2006 and anecdotal evidence reported an increase in people accessing services around the time of the smoking ban. We can categorically say that 2006 was higher than normal.

"But the numbers quitting in the Lothians are pretty similar to last year, which is very encouraging news."

The highest success rates among those trying to give up smoking were in the Forth Valley, Lanarkshire and Shetland NHS areas. In the Forth Valley area 65 per cent of those who tried to give up were still not smoking after one month. In the Lanarkshire area 51 per cent of quitters were not smoking after one month.

Sheila Duffy, chief executive of the anti-smoking group ASH Scotland welcomed the news, saying the smoking ban had been very well received.

She said: "Two years on from the ban on smoking in public places, we know that compliance is high and support for the legislation remains high.

"The fact that people are continuing to quit smoking is good for the health of the smoker and those around them. Giving up smoking has immediate and long term benefits for all smokers at any age and figures indicate that smoking cessation services are saving lives at a cost of around £800 per life-year saved – a highly cost-effective, life-saving treatment."

Smoke less, drink more - to forget the pain of withdrawal.

One addiction is replaced by another - or the other addiction is increased.

Be prepared for more public drunkenness, anti-social behaviour, and public vomitings and urinations and defecations as the smokers go through their withdrawal symptoms.

Timmy, you are out of order.

Smoking is NOT an addiction. It may be a habit, but it is not an addiction.

This article just goes to show that the population of the Lothians has a higher percentage of dumbed-down, unthinking sheep than the rest of the country.

Get a life people! Smoking is not as bad for you as the antis make out and passive smoking doesn't exist!

My dear Minty,

Anyone can see that smoking is not an addiction and anyone can see that it ia not as harmful as it is made out to be. The only thing that stops many people seeing these two facts is the huge amount of propaganda that they are subject to nowadays.

You know, sometimes I genuinely feel sorry for those who suck all this rubbish up like a sponge and then spurt it out with some kind of percieved authority. They know not what they do.

Did I not say two years ago on these very pages that once they had the nazi-state smoking ban under their belts, they would start on drinking? Well? Would someone like to tell me that I was wrong? Or is it the case that so much negative propaganda has been spread about drinking that you all actually believe that anyone who dares to have a drink, let alone get drunk, needs controls in place to prevent them from doing so.

It will be either fatty foods or salt next. Mark my words. Yeah. I know that someone is going to say I'm being reactionary but people said exactly that when I said that drinking would be next for the chop after smoking. And look who was proven to be right.

This would all be really funny if our rights were not being removed in this way. Carry on the lot of you. Let them turn you all into obedient little plebs with no opinions or individuality.

How can anyone possibly know how many smokers there are in the Lothians, or how many are trying to quit? Are they trying to say that everyone who's trying to stop smoking is on the "national smoking cessation database", whatever that is (I've never heard of it)? Meaningless statistics.

Sheila Duffy, ASH, along with all your Labour Party conspirators, just carry on, keep perpetuating all your lies and deceit, using all your media buddies, however you become less and less credible with every outrageous announcement that you make. This Duffy, woman suggests that the smoking ban has been well received, 'What utter rubbish' tell that to the unemployed and all the business's you have decimated, Ms.Duffy, the alienated, pensioners, hospital and mental patients and all the many victims of your planned 'Hate' campaigns. How dare this plastic nanny refer too, and use the word,
'compliance', effectively treating and referring to grown adults as kids and sheep, she is worthy of the same contempt as all those that feed this ongoing corruption whether it be financially motivated or simply perpetuating the deceit. This disgusting bunch (ASH) are a coven of condescending crooks determining Government policy, this is the second biggest scandal of this lunatic and runaway Labour Government, that is following all their deceitful reasons for the Iraq War, they did not care much for the welfare and health of our service people or did they provide decent aftercare and support for them, the smoking ban was a great deflection for them and took peoples minds away from their nasty antics. It is really sad to think that I used to vote and support Labour, believing them to be democratic, for the people, more the fool me, eh? but NEVER EVER again will they get my support .
I would ask all tolerant folk to Vote out these crooks, with nothing left but Nazi policies to impose, in a feeble attempt to justify their ongoing existence and lack of imagination, they don't give a damn about our health, check out all the filthy hospitals, starved of needed funding, the disgusting food given to patients, lack of healthcare and anciliary staff, the list almost unending, this Labour Government, saw an opportunity in this whole health pretence. A complete investigation into ASH's funding

When I started to read this thread and others related to the smoking ban on this site, I was quite impressed at the knowledge that the commentators had in relation to the smoking ban and SHS. Then after a while I realised that two of the commentators were backing each other up and passing on FALSE or skewed information, whilst in the process were intent on making anyone who opposed the smoking ban look foolish, which, I might add, they failed to do miserably. Yet they continued to try to humiliate regardless, resorting to sarcasm and poor quality wit. It is clear that these anti-smoking commentators had a reasonable grasp of the arguments yet surprisingly continued to push the misinformation, lies and propaganda normally associated with labour spin and ASH lies. I realised what this meant and I am sure others have too. This tactic is becoming more common on other web sites, forums and newspaper comment sections. I (more than) suggest that these commentators are employed to perpetuated this mis-information on behalf of ASH. The aim is not to try and talk smokers into stopping but to influence any non-commited readers into believing that smokers are stupid, foolish,(or any other derogatory term). From the smokers point of view, and anyone who believes in liberty, this is inspiring as it indicates that ASH are losing the battle as each day goes by, and they know it. The new and extremely expensive advertising 'campaign for tobacco control' (control being the operative word)is wide-ranging, covering tv, radio, media and internet. Employing two or three propagandists is chicken feed, but indicative of the panic. What they fail to appreciate is that the more it becomes obvious that one section of society is intent on controlling another, then there will inevitably be a backlash. Whilst this is very expensive, I hope that this 'control campaign' continues and becomes even more desperate. The more desperate it becomes, the more counter-productive it will be. The proponent

Notice Charles IIIX (Does that mean seven?) has duplicated this posting on the "Demand for more action..." thread, where he at least finished it. Does he feel that multi postings will spread his sad message?
