Meanwhile, the muppets who manage the Road Bridge build the new toll plaza in the wrong place and yet no enforcement notice was issued for them.....

2

Young Gordon,

The Shore 19/02/2007 12:25:13

Doesn't stop oor council putting up a humungously modern Headquarters building bang in the middle of the Waverly Valley changing the entire landscape! Isn't that a site of scientific interest too?

3

Young Gordon,

The Shore 19/02/2007 12:27:22

Old Chain, it looks like you're gonna need a Marquee instead eh? See what they make o' that!

4

Young Gordon,

The Shore 19/02/2007 12:33:00

#2 yeah and soon they'll remove those booths completely when indeed the two Bridge tolls get scrapped! Hope Labour get booted for doubly wasting our money yet again, similar to the 'Traffic Mis-Management' Congestion catastrophe;
Bollards to Labour!!

Eddies on a one-man warpath. Good luck Eddie. You're funny.

less than two months before all of these clowns are out of a job roll on May 3rd!
though I wonder how much more of our money they can throw away before then on stupid stuff like this

Planning regulations are there for a reason, do work without correct consent, expect action to be taken

8

The city cooncil complains aboot the under-fire awnings at one o' Leith's historic pubs. Wonder why it hasna' looked at the skyline roond Edinburgh's city centre?Or is it nae sae historic?

9

Flash_es,

Spain 19/02/2007 12:53:18

So why has it taken some anti smoking council official (muppets as I like to call them) taken a year to spot this "The awnings extend to six metres, and is it bright red" what a waste of time and money

10

Xena - Warrior Princess,

Nannyland 19/02/2007 12:55:07

The hypocritical European Parliament enforced a smoking on ban on their building which has now been abandoned after 43 days. The MEPs just ignored it and they say the ban was unenforceable! The UK Independence Party Leader said "I don't want to told by PC People what I can and cannot do" My sentiments exactly pal! Maybe we will all have a case now to take to the European Parliament?

11

petrol head,

Edinburgh 19/02/2007 12:55:29

I'm in favour of getting rid of the awnings... provided we get rid of the rediculous smoking ban at the same time.

12

Statsman,

#1 Eddie D

Even if Labour are voted out, Alan Henderson will still be there. He is happy to recommend the planning committee pass plans for carbuncle developements, but gets all upset by the odd awning or light out of place at a small business address.

You can't vote him out because he isn't elected. He is a law unto himself - as is his shambolic department.

13

jambobones,

19/02/2007 13:15:12

our wonderful draconian council at work again.!!!

14

BobW,

Edinburgh 19/02/2007 13:20:38

Allan Henderson, what a man. It is OK to build flats on a scenic spot at the Water of Leith (New Mart). Wildlife habitat has been destroyed and the design can only be descibed as ugly. However, an awning over a public house, designed to sell alcohol, is not OK. Corrupt or just stupid?.

15

Paul Voltaire,

Methinks Eddie #1 should stand for the council on a 'pro-smoking' ticket.

#11: You know, I had an inkling that UKIP was on the right track.

Let's get them voted in and get the labour lot out. Some people compare UKIP to nazis but as far as I am concerned, labour are more like nazis.

18

Xena - Warrior Princess,

Nannyland 19/02/2007 14:19:17

#19 It REALLY brightened my day to read that Deborah Arnott (ASH) said "There can be no justification for politicians to place themselves above the law. It makes a mockery of the commissions's proposals for an EU-wide smoking ban", and I'm still laughing. Personally I'm voting Publican.

19

Simon M,

19/02/2007 14:48:40

Eddie D #1 - If you took a 30 second break from foaming at the mouth, you'd find that the smoking ban was orginally an SNP policy and is enthusisatically supported by them. I take it you'll be calling for people not to vote SNP, in addition to your anti-Labour and Lib Dem rant?

20

Scaramouche,

19/02/2007 15:10:06

I'm not a smoker, but I hope that whoever forms the next leaders of the pretendy Parly will alter some of that bill's provisions and allow for non-food-serving establishments to allow smoking. Or at least to erect smoking shelters outside pubs with room for them.

If they expect people to give up smoking because they've banned it from private premises, then they are being fascistic. You cannot force people to alter their habits .... not unless you go the whole way and make it illegal!

21

Repton,

edinburgh 19/02/2007 15:25:54

Time they took all the shelters down as the sad people using them are making our sreets look untidy.Time thet all wised up and realised smoking is bad for your health, pocket and image.

22

1969 , In the Sunshine,

19/02/2007 15:28:23

Its great that you believe strongly enough about this to do something about it Eddie, genuinely.

However, I wouldnt hold your (smoky) breath on this one.

23

Colin,

Banff 19/02/2007 15:57:53

#25,

I just need to point out that Eddie has more friends than you realise.

The SE numpties managed to alienate, ostracise and criminalise 1.2 million voters with this childish ban. Had they carried out proper research, they would have learnt that bans merely increase the number of smokers. They would have learnt that bans are extremely harmful to business. They would have learnt that passive smoke is harmless to 99.99% of the worlds population.

Maybe thats the real plan: increase the number of smokers, especially the young (who now see smokers standing outside on a daily basis) so that they can pull in more cash by way of taxation on tobacco.

24

Jakey Rowling,

19/02/2007 16:36:26

These issues are never ending, just seem to awning on.

25

rab, glasgow,

19/02/2007 17:02:42

21. Simon M /The smoking ban was not snp policy it was a private bill put forward by stewart maxwell, it was kicked into touch by the numpty,s then brought back by the numpty,s because they have bugger all else to do but force bans on the people of scotland. Jackass and kerrplonker are to blame for this forced undemocratic pc nannystate ban.
So before you accuse anyone of foaming at the mouth get your facts right. numpty voter.

26

gryphon,

north sea 19/02/2007 17:06:08

You’ve just got to look up and down the coast from the Chain Pier at the monstrosities their calling houses to wander how the hell the little minds in the planning dept actually work.

27

Statsman,

I agree. They seem to concentrate on the minutia and completely ignore the big picture.

28

desparate,

Edinburgh 19/02/2007 17:30:30

This has nothing to do with a smoking ban.
If you make external changes to your hhome or business you have to apply for planning connsent.EWhat is different about Punch Taverns. In their defence it appears the last owner flouted the law and Punch are now clearly trying to correct the situation. So all ye above take note and go easy on Mr Anderson its not his fault.

29

desparate,

Edinburgh 19/02/2007 17:32:02

sorry for the spelling errors in my message just caused by typing too fast before we get any silly comments.

30

One-man-bucket's older twin,

19/02/2007 17:34:19

Why don't they just make smoking a capital offence and be done with it - along with driving, drinking, not switching off all electrical appliances when not in use, not recycling, taking baths instead of showers, eating anything containing salt or sugar, cohabiting, owning your own house, not having more bairns than you can afford, and not being in any way dependent on the state for your income. That's better!

31

desparate,

Edinburgh 19/02/2007 17:40:30

Come on smokers be intelligent. You are in denial. You know smoking is not good for you or me as a non smoker. Why should I have to put up with all the smoke poisons. If you want to kill yourself by all means do it at home.
BUT YOU JUST CANT GET IT THOROUGH TO A SMOKER.
TIME WILL TELL!!

32

rab, glasgow,

19/02/2007 18:44:33

34. desparate, Edinburgh / Smokers want smoking rooms not kicked out in the street, if there was smoking rooms smokers would,nt want to be anywhere near a paranoid numpty clone like yourself. As for all the smoke poisons,do you wear a gas mask when out doors?

33

Gentleman,

Chicago, USA 19/02/2007 19:23:46

Being a former smoker I was appalled at the rigidity of this stupid law, they should allow pubs that don’t serve food to be allowed to apply for a smoking licence and staff that want to work there sign a waiver. They are pulling the same nonsense over here and many pubs are complaining about the lack of business. Believe me, an awning won’t save you in the middle of a Chicago winter (-33C the other week). The English will be plenty agrieved when their ban comes into force this summer.

34

Colin,

Banff 19/02/2007 19:26:19

Nicely said, Rab.

The anti smoking zealots conveniently forget how dangerous these emissions are. New studies conclusively prove that almost all lung cancers can be, and are, caused by these foul fumes. I guess we are easier targets.

This is not about health though.

This is about money, and control freakery.

I pity them. Their addiction to controlling my life is harder to quit than tobacco.

Not that I want to quit, I enjoy it too much. Even if I didnt smoke, I think I would be tempted to start just to rebel against the Health (s)Care loonies.

They also tend to forget that no-one gets out alive.....

35

ChrisC,

19/02/2007 20:24:30

Scotland could be even more beautiful if McConnell can get rid of the people - They just don't fit into his bigger picture of Scotland!
Was any Regulatory Impact Assessment done about social and environmental health rather than merely concentrating on ETS and cancer?
Just to confirm the relationship between smoking and lung cancer have a look at - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/TGD/picture/0,,389990,00.jpg

37

Gina Gibson,

Wales 20/02/2007 05:03:31

What about the NON smokers who have done their duty for their country? Aren't they entitled to breathe fresh air or eat their food without some inconsiderate oaf blowing smoke over it? I am always amazed at the way smokers seem to think that their right to smoke takes precedence over everybody elses right to breathe nicotine free air!
Smoking is dangerous but as has been shown here the majority of smokers don't care about ANYBODY'S health.....INCLUDING THEIR OWN!

38

1969 , In the Sunshine,

20/02/2007 08:57:38

Damn right Gina. Eddie has been running this silly argument for days now , tring to pull on our heartstrings with stories of (about 2) ex-servicemen needing to smoke in Rosyth.

Like all addictions (and as an (dry)alcoholic Im only too aware) those affected are generally in denial about it.

Smoking kills people , do you deny that ? Stop being a dinosaur. I say again, grow up and face your adult responsibilities. How long are you planning on lying to us and yourself ?

39

rab, glasgow,

20/02/2007 08:58:54

41. Gina Gibson, Wales/Why would you want to go into a SMOKING ROOM if you dont smoke or are you just one of the control freaks with paranioa about shs and just want to persecute people because they do not agree with your undemocratic nonsence. If the smokers win their fight for smoking rooms then best for every one and they will welcome non smokers not treat them like outcasts.

40

rab, glasgow,

20/02/2007 09:06:42

43. 1969 , In the Sunshine /Do you work for the numpty,s at folyrood, you come across like andy kerr, full of rubbish.
You call a debate a silly argument,Eddie has been posting possitive comments for the benefit of non smokers and smokers with the idea of smoking rooms ,but you just bang on and on the same crap we get from your control freak masters.
Give it a rest you are getting boring with your repetitive drivel.

41

1969 , In the Sunshine,

big white,

i have read for a long time about the good and the bad of smoking.....
being married to a district nurse who on a regualar basis goes to the homes of people with a terminal illness (dont worry she never discloses any names or addresses) would any of you see a 80 year old man or women having to sit outside there homes of more than 60 years to have a smoke while my wife goes and treats there partner, because under this so called ban on smoking allows my wife not to enter a home unless they did not smoke in there,,i repeat there home up to one and a half hours before my wife turns up..total reform is needed,,ps,,,my wife who is a non smoker would never ever let a patient or there partner go outside in frezzing weather to have a smoke.....and did all you anti smokers know its still ok to smoke inside a psychiatric hospital.mmmm..please forward your replys to me....

43

gordon aka smoker and proud,

edinburgh 20/02/2007 12:12:00

once again this argument raises its ugly head....when are paople going to realise that no matter what the se do smokers will continue to smoke...if we all stopped what the hell would get taxed???think of the billions that the government would lose in revenue?no one forces anyone to work in establishments that used to have smokers....and a resposible smoker would never dream of smoking at a table where food is being served (athoughthere are numpties who unfortunately did) or smoke at a bar....as said previously...well ventilated rooms....non smokers then have an actual greater choice...and we smokers wouldnt have to sit and breathe in the noxious odours of sweaty feet, bad breathe, overpowering perfume and toilet smells and stale beer smells.lets hope that there is a wee bit give and take and common sense.<<<<but i wont hold my breath with this executive!they cant even decide on what time to take a break!!!!!

44

rab, glasgow,

20/02/2007 12:24:02

46. 1969 , In the Sunshine / Bad laws dont work,
I break the ban every day,so do thousands of other truckers and van drivers, the police ignore this stupid law and carry on with real policing .
Why should they waste their time on idiotic laws passed by a bunch of selfseeking parasites at follyrood who fail to understand the meaning of the word democracy.

"Where you don't have a choice you get revolution and I'm sure there are a lot of smokers reaching that point now."

What an absolute classic! Watch out 1969, you'll be the first up against the wall when the revolution comes. :-P

Mind you, don't expect any revolutionary support from comrade Castro; a reformed smoker and ban supporter.
