HAND grenades were thrown at United Nations and European Union offices in a Serb enclave yesterday after Kosovo's parliament declared the province was an "independent, democratic and sovereign state".

In the first signs that the controversial announcement would lead to serious trouble, the EU was forced to abandon its office in the city of Mitrovica after two hand grenades were thrown. A grenade also exploded at the UN mission there.

In the Serbian capital Belgrade, a crowd of up to 2,000 angry Serbs stoned the US embassy to protest at the United States' support for the declaration, breaking a number of windows.

Demonstrators chanting patriotic songs appeared to be approaching the embassy easily through nearby side streets despite the presence of some 500 police in full riot gear.

The grenade which exploded at the UN mission caused no significant damage, but EU officials evacuated their building, which houses the team preparing a mission to supervise Kosovo's independence.

"Officials abandoned the (EU) building. Security guards said two hand grenades had been thrown. One had exploded," a source said.

The violent response to the declaration contrasted with scenes of wild celebration in Kosovo's capital Pristina.

Tens of thousands of Kosovo Albanians poured on to the freezing streets after the prime minister, Hacim Thaci, and the president, Fatmir Sejdiu, signed the independence declaration.

"Kosovo is a republic – an independent, democratic and sovereign state," the Kosovo parliament's speaker, Jakup Krasniqi, said as the chamber burst into applause.

On the jam-packed streets of Pristina, the reaction to the long-awaited declaration was instantaneous. Amid a fanfare of thousands of blaring horns from cars festooned with Albanian, British, American and Nato flags, came the crackling and judder of massive celebratory automatic weapons fire from all over Pristina.

Outside Pristina's central Grand Hotel, a whooping, hysterically happy crowd had gathered and the logo printed on one man's baseball jacket said it all. "Bye Bye Serbia" read the defiant white letters, above a picture of a hand showing the universally recognised extended middle finger.

"This is unreal, I have never seen so many people, I feel so special," said Krenare Maloku, a 20-year-old project manager and economics student. "Ever since I can remember, Albanians were fighting for independence. But shortly after independence here, we will wake up and see we have the same problems."

Ymer Govori, 36, carrying his daughter on his shoulders, said: "I feel stronger. I have my own state and my own postcode, and it won't say Serbia any longer."

The front page of Express, Kosovo's Albanian quality daily, carried photos of Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia, Slobodan Milosevic and Serbia's Prince Lazar with the unequivocal banner headline: "F*** YOU."

The United States and Britain and other EU countries are expected to support the declaration. "The US will continue to work with our allies to do the very best we can to make sure there's no violence," the president, George Bush, said yesterday while on a visit to Tanzania.

The Serbian prime minister, Vojislav Kostunica, condemned Kosovo as "a false state" in a televised address to the nation yesterday, minutes after it declared independence. He said Kosovo was propped up unlawfully by the US which was "ready to violate the international order for its own military interests".

Russia called the independence declaration "an illegitimate act" and called for an emergency session of the UN security Council, saying it was supporting Serbia's pledge to keep its borders intact.

The EU called for calm and non-violence following the declaration, while Nato's 17,000-strong K-For peacekeeping contingent, deployed across the province, was poised to respond to what their French commander, Lieutenant General Xavier de Marnhac called "any acts of provocation".

Some 600 British troops from the 1st Battalion, The Welsh Guards, are on standby to move to Kosovo at short notice should ethnic violence or riots break out in the province in the coming days.

BLOODY ENMITY DATES BACK MORE THAN 600 YEARS

MENTION the magical date of 1389 anywhere in the Balkans and everybody knows to what you are referring: the year of the battle of Kosovo Polje in central Kosovo, where the Serb Orthodox armies were defeated by the Ottomans, leading to 500 years of dominance by them in the region.

When Slobodan Milosevic stood at the site of the battle in 1989 and told one million Serbs he would return "their" lands to them, the stage was set for confrontation between Kosovo's Albanians and Serbs.

The first pro-independence demonstrations by ethnic Albanians in Kosovo were in 1968, and in 1991 Kosovo separatists proclaimed the province a republic as the wars in Yugoslavia broke out.

Nato allies first authorised airstrikes against Serb military targets in October 1998.

Amid continuing atrocities, such as the killing of 45 ethnic Albanians in the village of Racak, and after Belgrade rejected an internationally brokered peace deal, Nato launched 78 days of airstrikes against Yugoslavia.

By 10 June, 1999, Milosevic agreed to withdraw his troops from Kosovo.

Nato-led peacekeepers were deployed in Kosovo and Albanian refugees streamed back while Serbs fled the province.

I seem to remember we have troops as part of the NATO force in KOSOVO and that In Afghanistan we need more support for our troops we already have there but the army was already overstretched and could not afford to send more troops to their support.

Only a couple of days ago I read we are to send 1000 extra troops to KOSOVO in case of trouble there.
I think we should those 1000 to Afghanistan , if anywhere and certainly not KOSOVO.
In KOSOVO it seems the 'indiginous population' are being 'outvoted' by incoming immigrants from Albania and will no doubt be 'ethnically cleansed by the simple means of changing the laws of that troubled country to suit its new muslim majority.
It sseems to me that we in the UK already have the seeds of Balkanisation of the UK with many large areas being dominated by 'foreign origin, and religion.
We have sown the wind now I fear we will reap the whirlwind.
The modern way to defeat an enemy is first to export your population and then to use the democratic vote to change (defeat) that country by the (mis)use of democracy.

Another step towards the Islamisation of Europe. Give it 5 years and we'll see Shariah law being introduced there. Won't take that long 'tho for Al Quaeda to open a recruiting station there if they haven't already. Our only hope is that the Russians stomp on them hard before the trouble kicks off. The politically correct Muslim appeasers that are in charge of the UK certainly won't.

Will we reap the seeds that we sow?

Once again we are following the US down a track which suits their agenda only. Timing is only to suite the Bush regime who want to antagonise the Russians.

Watch now as Kosovo moves to effectively become a part of Albania. Why then should Republica Srpska not now declare independence with all the repercussions this would have for Bosnia?

As for the Islamic Republic of East Yorkshire....only time will tell!

#13 Because yet again we and the US lend our support to crooks with guns as they annex part of a country. I'm taking bets as to how long it will be before we have to send in troops to Kosovo/Albania 'rescue the country for democracy'and attack the KLA in the same way as happened with the mujaheddin in Afghanistan.

Forget all the hype, spin, history and all the "other" knowledge these far flung fireside experts have, or think they have, about this part of the world...What is the UK government on about? Along with the EU, and I assume the good old USofA, the are lining up to approve this unilateral declaration of independence. If this was Scotland, Wales, N Ireland or any other part of the UK they would have the troops out on the streets as quick as a flash and be condemning UDI as an illegal international act...hypocrites the lot of them.

The degree of dishonesty & censorship of western reportingover the Yugoslav wars could have ben envied by Joeseph Goebbels. There is barely a UK broadcaster or journalist who has not assisted in lying or censorship on this isue.

As an example see the refusal to report that the largest mas gracve in Kosovo was not created by Milosevic (in 4 1/2 years of "trial" no evidence was produced against him)but by British NATO "police" who murdered 210 unarmed civilians in the suburb of Dragodan only hundreds of yards from the British HQ at the time.

Naturally no attempt was ever made to bring our genocidal Nazi employees to justice.

Hen if you have some evidence of Russia, which is not inolved in running the place on either side, is a "fascist state" I would like to see you produce it. Just because it isn't run the way you want doesn't make it fascist.

On the other hand it is difficult to deny that, since they have engaged in genocide in that cause, all the NATO states are "Nazi states"

The Balkans,oh dear,the Balkans!

All parties in the former Yugoslavia were guilty of atrocities but it would seem that the Serbs were the worst offenders. The precedent of states recognising a unilateral declaration of Independence by a region of a country is fraught with danger for the international community. Who next-Basques or Bretons perhaps? And what of Taiwan. There is a deserving case for international recognition if ever there was one. Maybe Kososvo is a one off-there is no doubt that it would have been ethnically cleansed by the Serbs if they had had their way and Nato was right to intervene. The other big question is-the rights of Historical occupation versus the changes wrought by the rapid dynamics of migration. People have said for example that a small country such as Scotland or the Netherlands could easily become Muslim states within the lifetime of our Grand children. Is this a good thing or bad thing? What to do?
You tell me.
PS whatever one thinks of the current debate in Scotland-one good thing about the UK is that our entrenched democratic tradition would never allow the need for a UDI in Britain. If Scotland ever wishes to leave the UK it would be the velvet of velvet divorces. And from her current partners in the Union most would be immensely saddened if Scotland were to leave but would in the vast majority wish her well for the future.

I'm with Putin on this one. This is the first domino to fall. I'll bet there were some "no-go" areas there! Putin doesn't have all the PC business to contend with, so he can see this more clearly. I think Bush should be cosying up to Putin and making a friend out of him. Also the EU.

28MichScot-absolutely agree. Sad as it is these are two peoples that are not going to see eye to eye so it would be logical for the Kosovo Serbs to reunite with Serbia especially as in essence this is a split on strictly ethnic lines.

the west very selective memory, when the croats attacked the 500.000 serbs living in kraina for centuries the BBC reported tha heavy shells where raining down on the serbs at the rate of 2000 an hour this was kept up for a whole week, and that UNCONFURMED reports reported 6 killed!! your honesty bees makes the devil proud of you, specially when the same BBC reported that a mortar fired by the serbs on the muslims killed or injured 78!!

what they forgot to mention was that the croats where firing balloons!!!!!!

the serbs had a choice leave or get killed but of course that is NOT ethnic cleansing not if is done by the side we favour,

25# So Nato was right to intervene yes? then why was it NOT right to intervene when the croatians started murdering the 500,000 serbs living in kraina for over 500 years with the full blessing of the great nation of america wth german supplied artillery!

remember the croatian gestapo was worse than the german, they had 100s of 1000s of serbs in concentration camps murdering them at will for fun both the muslims and the croats did that BUT the croats where far far worse,

yet we the "honourable democratic west" hardly ever mentioned the one and only real ethnic cleansing of serbs by the croats! bloody hypocricy to the extreme

Sent on the 27th March 2007 - Nearly one year ago!!! From Christian Jennings who owes me £1150 and will not pay it back!

Good to see that you are reading my articles in The
Scotsman. FYI they pay one between 4-6 weeks after an
article is published. But they pay extremely
efficiently on the 14th or 15th of each month, so you
will be pleased to know that a monthly Standing Order
has been set up yesterday with the Halifax to pay you
pounds 350 on the 16th of each month to the bank
details you sent me a couple of times.

Last month and this were really the first where things
really got going here after a long, quietish lull, and
the region looks set to be busy for the forthcoming
few months at least. So I have confidence that the
payments will go through all fine. I am also hoping to
put a a similat sum through by direct payment before
the 16th of next month obviously.

#25 Geoff:
"All parties in the former Yugoslavia were guilty of atrocities but it would seem that the Serbs were the worst offenders."

It "would seem"...Geoff? Where is your documented evidence (concrete proof) to support such a charge against the Serbs? Please do not quote US/NATO-EU corporate media or George Soros afilliated sources since they were a party to the conflict.

"Maybe Kososvo is a one off-there is no doubt that it would have been ethnically cleansed by the Serbs if they had had their way and Nato was right to intervene"

Again Geoff, where is your documented evidence to support such a charge? Are you not aware that the Islamist-Nazi KLA was declared "without question a terrorist group" by none other than the US State Department in 1998?

Are you not aware of the fact that the Islamist-Nazi KLA terrorist group - in collusion with the United States under Bill Clinton, and NATO under Javier Solana -was transformed into the "Kosovo Protection Corps", and proceeded to MURDER over 6,000 and EXPEL 350,000 Serbs,Jews,Romanies and Gorani peoples in a "Kristallnacht" Nazi style pogrom?

I suggest you do some research on the KLA ,which it is very well documented was committed to Nazi style racial genocide of all non-Albanians - including moderate Albanians - who refused to support thir Heroin trafficking and child-sex slavery racketeering of tens of thousands of schoolgirls from all across Europe and the Balkans.

Google: "KLA drugs sex trafficking"
