Syria recognises Lebanon at last

SYRIA formally recognised Lebanon for the first time in six decades yesterday.
The foreign ministries of both countries said embassies would be set up in Damascus and Beirut before the end of the year. The move fulfils a long-standing demand of the West.

When the French left they devided their Middle Eastern colony into two, to give a separate state (calling it 'Lebanon') to the coastal Christians, in the hope it would help France maintain influence in the area. The larger state created (Syria) has till now argued the French had no right to devide "Syria"

Many Christians in Syria have relations (affinal, cosanguineal) in Lebanon. Both countries speak a similar local language with difference in odd words and pronounciation. French is the second language for both, although it's mainly the educated who speak it. Due to Syria's comprehensive and effective educational policy, that means a large proportion of the population probably speak French. So there's no language barrier between the two, and I doubt for the ordinary person in the street the only problem might be in any customs border tariff that might result. Syria's past attempt to control and stop the civil war in the Lebanon might have been criticised by the West, but there was a good reason from their point of view for this, at the least because the relations of many Syrians were also getting killed and it affected the informal trade between the two countries. I can't see it making much difference, except as an excuse for more customs border controls/tariffs? May the two countries go forward to more peaceful and rewarding times.
