Published Date: 27 October 2007
SYRIA has razed the site of what might have been a secret nuclear reactor that was bombed by Israel last month, according to a US-based atomic research institute.
In commercial satellite images taken on Wednesday and released by the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), the suspected reactor building visible before the 6 September Israeli air raid had vanished.

An image showed tractors o
r bulldozers and scrape marks on the ground where the building had stood before the air attack. The site is in a remote corner of north-east Syria near the Euphrates River, about 90 miles from the Iraq border.

Shlomo Brom, a senior analyst at the Jaffee Centre for Strategic Studies near Tel Aviv, said the images "furnish quite strong proof that there was something dirty going on there".

"By destroying the building the Syrians, in their stupidity, have strengthened the justification for the Israeli action," he said.

Mr Brom, formerly chief of strategic planning for the Israeli army, added: "According to most indications, this was a nuclear reactor built along the North Korean model that was meant to produce plutonium."

A report by ISIS, which tracks activity that could pose bomb proliferation threats, said: "Dismantling and removing the building at such a rapid pace dramatically complicates inspection of the facilities and suggests Syria may be trying to hide whatever was there."

It added that what appeared in the pictures to be a trench might point to the Syrians excavating buried pipes running between the demolished building and a nearby structure, which is still standing and could have been a pumping station to supply water to the reactor.

However, a senior diplomat close to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the satellite images "do not necessarily make this site a nuclear one". He added that the IAEA is undertaking a detailed analysis.

Syria has denied hiding a nuclear site from the IAEA and said the only facility in the area was a desertification research centre.

The Israeli government said only that the airforce carried out a strike in Syria on 6 September. it did not specify the target. Strict censorship has been imposed on the Israeli media's reporting of the incident, making Israeli analysts reliant on foreign press reports.

ISIS, headed by former United Nations weapons inspector David Albright, was the first to pinpoint publicly what Israeli warplanes had targeted.

It said in an earlier report that the site resembled a North Korean gas graphite nuclear reactor in design.

However, experts have urged caution in interpreting the images, saying that the type of nuclear reactor favoured by North Korea has few identifying characteristics visible from the air.

Mr Brom said it was too early to say whether the Israeli air strike would deter Syria from building a nuclear reactor in the future.

But he said the absence of a Syrian response to such a "serious provocation" suggested Damascus had been deterred by Israel's military power.

Earlier this month, the New York Times quoted US officials as saying the Israeli strike had targeted a partially built nuclear reactor made with North Korean help that was years away from completion.

The Israeli army on Thursday cancelled a large-scale military exercise due to take place on the occupied Golan Heights, seized from Syria in 1967, so as not to increase tensions with Damascus, defence officials said. Israeli media reports said the exercise, for which reservists have been called up, would instead take place in Israel's northern Galilee region. It is to be the largest Israeli military manoeuvre since the 2006 war with Hezbollah.

Thank God for Israel...with the imminent demise of Bush's Republicans, they are the last defence from mediocre, underachieving left wing governments, too cowardly to eradicate the cancer of islam once and for all

When is someone going to eradicate the nuclear stockpile of 200 weapons that the Israelis have? We can't have a nuclear free Middle East whilst leaving the American financed and armed Israelis with them.

#1 I wouldn't worry too much about the war criminal Bush's legacy. Even Hillary Clinton supports him in his plan to attack Iran, and probably start World War III.

That way, #2, the right wing may well get what they wished for.

#2 No, Conan ... the right wing will get what's coming to them!

btw ... it is generally considered that because of all the wars going on all over the place since WWII ... in Asia, Africa, South America, the Middle East and recently Europe ... we have lived through WWIII. The next conflagration that leads to the involvement of all of us will be WWIV. And it will be a helluva lot shorter! The nuclear winter approacheth!

So the Syrians have cleared up the mess the Israelis made? This is news?

We still don't know why Israel attacked, and probably never will.

1. Gandalf.
Interesting name.
A quote by Hitler -
"The Jews are a Cancer on the breast of Germany"

Unfortunately, there is no difference between the democrats and the republicans in the US. At the end of the day they follow the same path.

I could so easily compare the crimes of the US administration then make a call to "eradicate the cancer of america". But that would just be racist, wouldnt it?

4. 49th state.
Unfortunately, the threat of democrasy in the US has long since dissapeared.
Didn't the majority of the american public oppose the war in Iraq from the start?
And what good did millions marching on the streets do?
Its a total shame.

On the side, I find it interesting how these planes have long distance fuel tanks.

I know the answer..why not give the mad mullahs access to Nuclear weapons so that the balanced, gentle, objective freedom loving islamists can impose their lifestyles on us all.

What a wonderful world that would be...when sites like these are shut down, when freedom of speech is banned, when woman are hanged for having consential sex outwith marriage, etc, etc, etc...I wonder what the mediocre, untalented, underachieving left wing would moan about then...would it be, where is America when you need it? Hypocritical tossers.

If it hadn't been for nuclear proliferation in letting Israel, Pakistan and India get the bomb, we wouldn't be in this mess.

As it is, every man and his dog will have one at this rate, and we can thank ourselves for it.

Dirty bomb technology is available to all now because of lax control, and it is just as frightening to the general public.

Obviously, you have not read about our "friends" the North Koreans who have sold them nuclear plans and were helping them to build their nuclear facility.
The USA has satellite picures of before and after.. The fact that Syria razed the building after Israel destroyed much of it should prove to you what is going on. You should be questioning their motives.
Nobody want to go to war, that's why we imposed sanctions.
The only thing these posts prove is the the Anti-American, Anti-Israel people..don't read, don't care about the truth..and are still twisting the facts around to their agendas.

Call Me Al,

At least in democracies there is potential for the truth to come out. In military dictatorships the balance is the other way.
This thread seems to polarise the worst of "western" corruption and exploitation against "Arab" agression and lies. The truth is obviously way more complicated, and neither side has that much to be proud of.
Who is happy to see Syria with nuclear capability though?

#13 Lynne. Do you mean like Bush lying to the American people about RPG 29 rockets and EFP's which he says the Iraqis and Afghanis get from Iran? This is despite the fact that your own military and intelligence people are well aware that the RPG 29's are made in Russia, and the EFP's are actually being manufactured in Iraq.

He is lying to the American people, again, to try and justify his forthcoming attacks on Iran, and to get the American people to believe that a war against Iran is justified.

If you don't believe me about this, and you probably wont, then check it out for yourself from American sources.

Yes, I've read what's been said, but there is no proof that Syria was building a nuclear reactor, or that North Korea was helping them.

It is indisputable that Israel attacked Syria without justification, and Israel's motives are indeed questionable.

And what sanctions are you talking about? Iran? Different country Lynne.

#16 - Guga

Guga, where weapons are made has little to do with who supplies them. The IRA had AK 47's - were they supplied by Russia? Nope - Lybia.

> "He is lying to the American people, again, to try and justify his forthcoming attacks on Iran,..."

More scaremongering. The 'American sources' you want people to reference - they wouldn't be leftist, communist/socialist rags, would they?

- The 'Village Voice'?

- The latest Michael Moore movie?

- The ones that claimed that the US had no choice but to 'institute the draft ' - which has never happened either?

Scaremongering - presenting a phony scenario as fact as to intimidate or scare.

A statement like "you wouldn't want a million Arabs moving to Falkirk, would you?" fits the bill.

22

Biker,

#12 Charlotte. Actually dirty bombs do kill millions of people, with fallout and radiation exposure.
Daithi. Scaremongering seems to be the sole stock in trade for those amongst us who continue with this drivel about the war on terror. Any fool can make the justification fit their facts (and not only the so called lefties). Scaremongering is what keeps Dubya on track with his plans for Iran, and I hope to god that Broon does not follow suit.

Daithi. No you didnt, all you did was suggest the Village post and Michael Moore were at fault. I suppose that the idea of good ol boy Dubya pulling the wool over your eyes is too much to accept?
Scaremongering at its best was the remarks by him and Blair that the Iraqis had weapons of mass destruction, or indeed that the war was won. The whole middle east issue is rife with spin and scaremongering and I sincerely hope that when the whole fiasco is done, these idiots will be taken to task for creating a climate of fear to justify their own political means.

> Daithi. No you didnt, all you did was suggest the Village post and Michael Moore were at fault.

No, I speculated at what sources he was referring to, and their credibility. No fault was mentioned.

> Scaremongering at its best was the remarks by him and Blair that the Iraqis had weapons of mass destruction

So, scaremongering at it's best is what I referred to - in a statement made here, on this very board, by Guga concerning Arabs and Falkirk.

> The whole middle east issue is rife with spin and scaremongering

I'll end here an a good note and agree with you, Biker - I wanted to point out that it's used by both sides and the best way to find facts is the free flow of information.

I'll continue to question and examine leftist (and rightist) sources, I respect that you'll do the same.

Take care, and have a nice afternoon (or evening!)

And in what way would this lifestyle be any worse than the world view as espoused by yourself and W. Smith? Both seem to involve manning the barricades and heavy punishment for wrongdoers. I think I'd take my chances for freedom with Mrs Khan at the local grocers over yourself.

It seems the US after having supported terrorists of various shapes and sizes over the years and bombing over 30 different countries since WWII, is the entity that shouldn't have the "Bomb".
