CONCERN is growing that Israel and Syria may be heading towards war, with signs that both are preparing their armies.
The preparations are being made across both sides of the ceasefire line in the Golan Heights area occupied by Israel since 1967.

Syria has increased troop numbers and brought in rocket units similar to those used by Hezbollah against Israel in la
st summer's war in Lebanon, according to intelligence estimates. The Syrians have also brought in new anti-aircraft guns and tanks from Russia and recently conducted a frontline exercise of troops.

Israel yesterday appointed a team of senior ministers to handle policy towards Syria, but denied it was a "war cabinet".

The move came just a day after Israeli troops held a widely publicised training exercise in which they captured what army officials described as a model of a Syrian village.

In an apparent attempt to reassure Damascus, the Israeli prime minister, Ehud Omert, was quoted as telling the security cabinet yesterday: "Israel does not want a war with Syria and one needs to be careful about a scenario of miscalculation that leads to a security deterioration."

Amos Yadlin, the Israeli army intelligence chief, told Knesset MPs that "the Syrians have a lot to lose if a war breaks out". He said that the Syrian president, Bashar Assad, "has a regime, an airforce, civilian networks, an electricity network and civilian infrastructure: all of these are liable to be harmed in a war".

Since the war between Israel and Hezbollah, Mr Assad has expressed interest in resuming the talks with Israel that stalled seven years ago over the extent of an Israeli pullback in the Golan Heights, but he has also hinted that Syria might resort to force if Israel shunned diplomacy.

According to Israeli army intelligence, the Syrian army preparations are defensive and they also believe that Mr Assad does not want to initiate hostilities. Israel has been talking about war and peace simultaneously, albeit without embracing Mr Assad's offer of talks.

The defence minister, Amir Peretz, asked about the possibility of a conflict, said the army "must be ready to face degradation" on the Syrian front. He said that over the past ten months, Israel's military presence there had been beefed up on his orders. But he added: "This does not reflect aggressive intentions against Syria." He called for Israel to "do everything to check whether it is possible to open negotiations".

There has been concern in the security establishment that Israel's inability to achieve a clear victory against Hezbollah might have emboldened Syria to initiate hostilities on the Heights. David Kimche, a former Mossad official and director-general of the foreign ministry, said the aim of the Israeli army exercise was "to tell the Syrians 'don't even consider doing anything because we will be ready'."

Mr Olmert was accused by Meir Shetreet, a cabinet minister, of sending a "mixed message" to Syria yesterday by forming the new cabinet grouping, on the grounds it might be construed as war preparation. According to reports, the army would present its operational plans in the event of conflict to the new cabinet team.

The grouping includes the foreign minister Tzipi Livni, the deputy premier Shimon Peres, and Avigdor Lieberman, the far-right minister for strategic threats. Mark Regev, the Israeli foreign ministry spokesman, said. "This is not a war cabinet. It's a committee to evaluate if there is a possibility to pursue a diplomatic route with Syria."

Nadim Shehadi, a Middle East specialist at the Chatham House think-tank in London, said it is "very possible" Israel and Syria could collide in Lebanon, especially if Syria tried to foment further instability there.

In such a case, Israel would have a much easier time defeating Syria than Hezbollah as it would be facing a conventional army rather than a guerrilla force. But he added: "I think it is far-fetched to think that Assad is preparing military action to get the Golan back.

"The Syrians never fight the battles on their own territory; they fight on the territory of others. Right now they are fighting with America in Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine."

Mr Shehadi said that in the Syrian case, the war preparations might be aimed at persuading Israel to return to the negotiating table. "When you want to talk peace, you have to show you are willing to make war," he said.

TENSION SECOND TIME ROUND

THE increased tension between Syria and Israel coincides with the 40th anniversary of the Six Day War - triggered in part by tensions between Israel and Syria.

In the months preceding Israel's dramatic victory, there were exchanges of fire across the demilitarised zone between the two countries and an air battle in which Israel downed seven Syrian warplanes.

Syria accused Israel of planning to attack it. Then the Soviet Union informed Syria and Egypt that its intelligence confirmed Israeli troops were massing near the Syrian border, a claim not corroborated by UN observers.

Egypt ordered UN troops out of the Sinai Peninsula. Israelis sensed they faced attack by surrounding Arab states and launched a devastating air attack on Egypt on 5 June, followed by ground advances against Egypt, Jordan and Syria.

From the article:

""When you want to talk peace, you have to show you are willing to make war," he said."

Thats a very dangerous game to play. The last thing the middle east needs is another war. A further attempt at negotiating peace with syria is well worth a try.

there is conflict brewing. the lines are being drawn at the G8 summit. bush wants to install missile defence in Europe, Russia is not convinced, they are the swing vote on the scales of world power. Israel has only one ace to play, and i hope they do not celebrate the 40 year victory, but realise someone else has experienced 40 years of defeat and the misery of occupation.

Russia has, for many years, been involved in the Arab States, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, and of course Afghanistan, until they withdrew their occupying forces. The US backed the Afghan rebels during the Russian occupation.

From a prophetic point of view, over 2600 years ago, Ezekiel and Daniel foretold of the battle of Gog and Magog. The armies of Gog and Magog will be composed of Russian, Syrian, Iranian, Turkey, and northern African states. They will, under stealth, amass their armies with intent to annihalate Israel.

I believe that the plans have already been discussed and are being implemented. However, it may be several more years before this battle will take place. It will result in the near annihaltion of all of their military forces, approximately 85% of their soldiers will perirish in the mountains and in the deserts of northern Israel.

Russia has a long history in affairs dealing with Syria. Some have suspected that Russia has deep nuclear missle silos in the northern and eastern regions of Syria.

When the Spetz Naz (Russian Special Forces) moved the biological and chemical weapons, raw materials, and other secret "weapons" out of Iraq in late February or early March of 2003, prior to the US led invasion of Iraq, the convoy of trucks were reportedly driven into Lebanon. This fact has been cooroborated through Russian informants and CIA operatives working in Lebanon and Iraq.

Face it. Russia is supporting, through arms deals, the Iranian's sponsored terrorist cells, such as al Qaeda, Hezzbolah, etc.

North Korea is supplying Iran with missiles and other weapons. Russia has shared technical and scientific technology with the Iranians and Syrians, including nuclear weapons design and development, if not in fact providing Iran with fissionable material towards the construction of nuclear warheads.

This entire region is a powder keg and one of these days, it's going to blow up. I suspect it will happen within the next 3 to 6 years, if not sooner.

I suspect that the best course of action for the US is to withdraw it's troops to the Continental United States and concentrate on building up our own defense system. Which, by the way, needs it badly. But, when and if the troops are brought home, don't look for the demo-craps controlled congress to spend money on the military or our defenses. They'll bury their swelled heads in the sand and hope this is all just a bad dream.

On the other hand, to do so would leave a vacumm in this region and lawlessness will prevail, which will also threaten the safety of our nation and it's citizens. There are no easy choices here for the United States. None whatsoever.

Yes, the battle of Armageddon will occur in Israel and at her borders. The valley which stretches for 200 miles north of Jerusalem will have the blood of men standing so high that it will rise to the height of a horses bridle.

The Battle of Gog and Magog will occur before the Battle of Armageddon, even though some thologians have confused the two, beleiving that they are the same battle. They are not.

Russia, Iran, Turkey, Syria, Sudan (along with several muslim states in Northern Africa) have been identified as those aggressor nations which will wage war on Israel before the "man of evil" gains power and control in Europe.

The prophesies foretell their destruction and annihalation. This is the Battle of Gog and Magog. Not Armageddon.

Armageddon will be those armies of Europe and the West, including China, which will lay seige to Jerusalem and the holy Lands. This battle will be led by the Anti-Christ (the "man of evil"). His reign and power will end with the defeat of his armies, for this is the time whenm Jesus Christ will return to the world in all of His glory and power, and will destoy these armies. It is then that HE will establish His reign over the world, from the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

His reign in Jerusalem will last for one thousand years. One thousand years of peace upon the face of the earth. What a glorious time to be alive, To see HIM, to worship Him, and sing His praises.

Don't know how to break it to you, but, we live in the last days, before the "man of evil" will be revealed to the world. Satan will have almost total control of the earth during his reign. He will appear as an "Angel of Light" and the worlsd will adore him. In the beginning, he will be a man of peace, but 3.5 years into his regin, he will be assasinated. Three days he will be viewed dead by the world and, being the great counterfeiter Satan is, on the 3rd day, the "man of e

What we will get with a war is thousands more dead on both sides, stalemate, nothing solved nothing changed and more refugees.
But look on the bright side the price of oil will go through the roof again and the already filthy rich oil companies and their share holders will be rolling in more cash than they could possibly spend or deal with.
You would think the least they could do would be to donate some of that cash they really dont need to the families that are displaced or who lose somebody to the war.

Israel going to war with Syria? No chance. Not after Israeli Winnograd report revealed how Israel was defeated by Hizbullah last year. Israeli army is no match for the likes of Hizbullah. Small band of lads in the Hizbullah group smashed the entire columns of Israeli tough merkava tanks. The resistence group even sanks Israeli warships in the most remarkble victory for decades. Israel is too scared to take on Hibzollah ever again. Israel soldiers dread facing Lebanese fighters. Some even commit suicide than go into combat. Therefore, Israel is only bluffing to go to war with Syria which is an ally of Hizbollah. Another defeat would be too much to take.

Dragomir: "many Israelis are moving (or moving back) to Romania just to escape the insecurity and insanity in Israel."

I don't think so.

I do think that a few hundred per year apply to reaquire Romanian citizenship. Why? Because they can, and because it comes with all the rights and privileges of EU membership, opening many doors that would be closed to those holding only Israeli citizenship.

From what I understand, Romania is today home to about 11,000 Jews. I couldn't tell you how many of these are Israeli citizens.

About 273,000 Jews of Romanian origin have immigrated to Israel since 1948 -- in part, to escape the insecurity and insanity in Romania.

The total population of Jews of Romanian origin in Israel is now about 450,000. Those who were born in Romania, and their descendents for three generations, have the right to acquire Romanian citizenship, but as I said, so far, only a few hundred per year are doing so.

In addition, about 50,000 non-Jews have come to work in Israel, thereby escaping the insecurity and insanity in Romania.

True. The German Embassy reports that "over 170,000 Jews have immigrated to Germany from former Soviet states since 1990, and there are an estimated 100,000 waiting to leave their countries for various reasons."

There are still Jews leaving the former Soviet Union but not all of them are choosing to go to Israel as the growing Jewish population in Germany shows. One possible cause of this is that Israel is more dangerous because of the terrorist threat, whereas Germay has far less of a threat. Dont forget Yorkshire. God's County.

"I see that Jew-hater troll James Donald is at it again."

James Donald is not a jew-hater and although at times I disagree passionately with him I dont doubt the sincerity with which he holds his views.

71

Conan,

Here 07/06/2007 23:12:26

#71 - yeah, fortunately being sincere in one's views does note make those views any more legitimate. As is becoming obvious the longer he posts, James Donald despises everything jewish and would always take the side of anything and anyone that is in opposition to Jews/Zionists/Israel - unfortunate, but that's the way it appears to be.

He is quite correct in his appraisal of my own views regarding Islam. The record clearly demonstates that Islam has had a very detrimental effect on the development (i.e., lack of development) in all of the nations and territories it has infested. I have no proble in admitting this and will be happy to debate the facts with anyone, anytime, anywhere.

My problem with the likes of troll Donald is that he attempts, feebly, to disguise his own Jew-hatred, instead of standing up and explaing to us what his beef is with the Jews/Zionists/Israel.

#72. Conan, Here - "My problem with the likes of troll Donald is that he attempts, feebly, to disguise his own Jew-hatred" - standard troll material from someone who revels in confrontation and insult and is quite possibly mentally unstable. Perhaps you will stand up and explain why you despise all muslims and rejoice when they are killed. Debate with a troll is pointless but if being here keeps dross like you of the street then so be it. It is probably also in your own best interests as, if you went into a pub or club with your rancid attitude, you would likely end up with a fat lip or worse.

CombatVet68 -- guess what: Muslims have an apocalypse story too, in which Gog and Magog rise up to spread chaos and Jerusalem is ruled by the Antichrist (called Masih Dajjal in Islam, or "False Messiah")

Muslims also believe that Jesus will return at the end of time to defeat the Anti-Christ and initiate a 1,000 year period of world peace before Judgment Day.

So I guess you share a lot in common with your Muslim adversaries. Except they think Jesus is on their side, not yours.

It's interesting that every generation believes that it is special and the End of Times is nigh, and it never quite happens.

When Islam arose and conquered the Middle East, Christians thought it was the prophesized end of the world. When Crusaders sacked Jerusalem, Muslims thought it was the prophesized end of the world. When Genghis Khan and his Mongol hordes wiped out both Muslim and Christian lands, both religions said Armageddon was nigh.

And it didn't happen.

So maybe we should make policy decisions in this world based on facts and not faith and speculation.

As Christ said, no one knows the Hour, except God. So stop interpreting ancient propheices to make yourself feel like you are part of a special moment in history. Your ancestors were wrong every time they prophesized Armageddon, and yet here you are, still making foreign policy and military decisions based on your own wishful thinking.

That is not an act of faith, but of hubris and delusion.

James Donald..
That remark about me using Wikipedia is just another twisted lie of yours. I very rarely use that as a source. You know that too, as a lot of the sources I use do not seem to meet with your approval because they are too biased for your taste.!! So, please, try and tell the truth for a change.
Now the neo-Nazi party is small and insignificant!! Well, Maybe to you. But they have desecrated cemetaries, marched against Jews etc...so I do not think it is comfortable there for them...I could be wrong, but I do not think so.
As far as the Russians who have left they have gone to the USA, and Isreal and other countries. Before the change in Russia, my husband and I and some others formed a foundation to get Russians Jews out of Russia. In one year we managed to get 37 couples out, but the process was extremely slow as we had to do this in a very unusual way..
Here in America, there are very large Russian communities, and in Israel I am sure it is the same.

82

Listen Ear...get yourself together..Israel doesn't start wars...they win them and finish them. So if anyone needs to be hauled into court as war criminals...try Hamas, and Hezbollah...(we are still waiting for them to disarm)
If you don't want more killings and rampages the terrorists have to stop. Israel will not sit by and turn the other cheek any more.

Only Israel benefits from these endless Middle East wars. Iraq is the beginning. As we commit war-crimes in Baghdad, the US gov't commits treason at home by opening mail, eliminating habeas corpus, using the judiciary to steal private lands, banning books like "America Deceived" from Amazon and Wikipedia, conducting warrantless wiretaps and engaging in illegal wars on behalf of AIPAC's 'money-men'. Soon, another US false-flag operation will occur (sinking of an Aircraft Carrier by Mossad) and the US will invade Iran.. Then we'll invade Syria, then Saudi Arabia, then Lebanon (again) then ....

Actually Lynne, Israel is all about starting wars. Last year, Israel started bombing Lebanon before Hezbollah fired any rockets. In 1967, Israel struck first, and doubled its size by stealing more Arab land.

Arguably, the entire existence of Israel has been one long act of aggression. The Zionists chose to come from Europe and build a state on Arab land. That was a declaration of war on the indigenous population of Palestine.

If someone came from across the planet, stole your house and told you to live in a refugee camp, you would probably consider that an act of war.

Israel was created by theft, and it will be undone by its own karma. What goes around comes around.

As for you Tall Girl, why not actually follow the moral example of peace and compassion that is the highest call of the Bible, rather than hoping for the destruction of your fellow human beings? You deserve everything you wish on others, you hypocrite.

Christ said that many would prophesy in his name, but when he will meet them on Judgment Day, he will say to them: "I never knew you." Today's Pharisees who quote the Bible in order to justify their hate and bloodlust will be really surprised (and dismayed when they encounter what Jesus is really about.

What made you think there is winner in the July Lebanon war last year? What an overload of craps are you spewing out with all these silly ramblings of yours? It was the UN and US who forced Israel to stop her advance into Lebanon and as such, mission unaccomplished. If not for this and because of civilian casualties, Israel would never have given up pursuing the Hezbollah terrorists further.

What made you think Hezbollah are poorly equipped? They were well trained by the Iranians who also funded and supplied them with modern weapons which also included Russians made. Many Israelis view the war as a “defeat” because Israel failed to achieve her main goal of finding the kidnapped soldiers. The defeat for Hezbollah is – they completely lost control of their stronghold along the Lebanese border (now replaced by UN peacekeeping force) and were pushed out further to the south of Litany river.

They also failed to swap kidnapped soldiers for Lebanese prisoners as revealed by Hezbollah Hassan Nasrallah for the sole purpose of kidnapping the Israelis. With them making use of civilians as human shields, they are also responsible for causing high civilian casualties. The good news is, Hezbollah will think twice of ever kidnapping anymore Israeli soldiers again.

#87

#82. Lynne, USA - "That remark about me using Wikipedia is just another twisted lie of yours. I very rarely use that as a source" - I'm sure that you told me you used this (or maybe it was Sandy) but I don't think there is any need for your "scalded cat" reaction "another twisted lie of yours" - you certainly seem to be a bit of a "drama queen".
"I could be wrong, but I do not think so" - you are. The NPD is a small group (other groups like the DVU are even smaller) and heavily inflitrated by the German Secret Service. This is why the attempt to ban it as unconstitutional in 2003 failed because it emerged in court that a large percentage of the leadership were actually undercover agents of the Secret Service. If you cared to look at the site for the Zentral Judenrat you will find that it will give you the information of how many Jews have come to Germany since the fall of the Soviet Bloc (in English) and what the Jewish Community in Germany is up to now (mainly busy integrating new arrivals). So, no "twisted lies" just more smears from you and a refusal to look at the real situation when it does not suit your prejudices. Try visiting Germany; you will be quite safe.

I just by chance came upon this site and found it interesting to read all of your comments. I think what I see is a lot of people trying to force their beliefs upon others...the irony of this is that is the reason the world has always been in conflict and war and this will not pass. Everyone wants to be right. That is exactly why we are at war. My belief is there are good people everywhere. I truly only wanted to post because I am married to a Syrian (christian) and he wants to travel back to syria in July with our family. He believes all the news of a potential war between syria and israel this summer is rhetoric and nothing will come of it. Obviously I have concerns for the safety of my family. I am interested to hear what all of you have to say. A last word of advice...if you have a decent heart (no matter where you are from) we all want peace...no one wants pain or to see others suffer.

Rhett.# 87 .Arguabley? Well when you have the facts wrong..people do tend to argue. They did not build a state on Arab lands..Much of that land was bought when it was the Ottoman Empire.. so much so, they decided that no more could be sold to the Zionists.
Secondly, the agression has mainly been by the Arabs..including when Israel became a state. Look up the facts. The Arabs could have had a state, instead they chose to go to war with Israel, and not recognize the state of Israel. The declaration of war was not made by the Israelis.
You seem to have taken a few shortcuts to your logic...
The refugee problem is not caused by Israel. The refugee peoblem is caused by other Arab countires who refused to admit, or told them to leave, after telling them to run from their country. They did not allow them to have jobs, and would not accept them.
The Arab refugee problem is caused by the Arabs..please go read and check your facts. You have been told lies so often you believe the myths.. And as someone once said, if you tell a lie often enough, it tends to seem like the truth.
There was no theft of land for Israel. She got 20% of the Mandate, and the Arabs got the other 80%.
They chose not to develop it, but to go after the Israelis, the day after they became a State. Look it up.
EVERYTHING you have written is false... Israel is here to stay, it will not be undone by anything. The Palestinians live the way they do, because their leaders care not an ounce for them. They have stolen monies that have been given them for aid, and they use these poor people as "props" of how bad Israel is to them.
No one stopped them from making an oasis instead of a refugee camp.
I think that if they demanded Mrs. Arafat return the billions stolen by her husband..they could build schools and hospitals and infrastructure.
I realize that you have not thought of that...just blame the Jews...as always. But the history o

James Donald...not being Jewish, and not really interested in what is happening around the world with antisemitism..you may not know about the number of attacks on Jews and synagogues and cemetaries. I do have that information sent to me.
And if you remember there was a flood of Jewish families leaving out of France these past 2 years. Chirac had to promise that the gov't would come down on these people doing hate crimes.
As for England...It's in trouble to me. They have decided not to teach about the holocaust for fear of "insulting" the moslems living there and going to school there. Yet, the other day I read an article about how they were encouraging Islamic studies..
in the schools..What, no fear of insulting the Jewish population in Britain?

122

James Donald,

Midlothian 08/06/2007 23:34:41

#122. Lynne, USA - "you may not know about the number of attacks on Jews and synagogues and cemetaries. I do have that information sent to me" - then you should know that such attacks in Germany are rare. There may be more such attacks in France because it has a very large Muslim population.
I don't set the school curriculum in England and what they do is up to them. I am sure that the Jewish holocaust will still be taught as part of the wider study of WW2. Scotland has an entirely different education system and I myself learned about the persecution of the Jews as well as other groups (the "holocaust" label is a relatively recent thing) whilst studying the history of Germany 1900 - 1945 (this was one of the choices on the history curriculum along with the French Revolution, Witchcraft in Scotland and the Russian Revolution and Civil War). There is no significant anti-Semitism in Scotland and Scotland is the only European nation where there has never been any state persecution of the Jews.
Of course all thes reports of a massive rise in anti-Semitism may not be entirely accurate as this article from the Jerusalem Post would suggest:

You are simply making a fool of yourself!! After reading Conan's post, I agree with Sandy that Conan was focusing on the influence and "effect" of Islam has on development. And here you are blindly defending this dangerous cult. Of course, we know you are a Muslim terrorist appeaser and apologist. You are so fond of making comparison between Islam and Christianity but one thing for sure is that: Islam is notorious for its extremism and most terrorists happened to be Muslims as well. Nothing unusual about their violent behaviour for their main goal is to convert or kill infidels (non-believers) to dominate and turn the world into a Muslim Caliph.

The part about "in Israel I am sure it is the same" is the cause of the whole problem in the middle east.

What does it say about a middle eastern country predominantly populated and ruled by white caucasians? It says an aweful lot, all negative.
