FAMOUS Australian wildlife expert Steve Irwin, nicknamed the Crocodile Hunter for his daring tussles with the reptiles, was killed today by a stingray barb.
The 44-year-old, known around the world for his love of crocodiles, died during a diving expedition when he was attacked by one of the dangerous stingrays and received a deadly barb through his heart.

Irwin was filming an underwater documentary o
n the Great Barrier Reef in north-eastern Queensland state when the accident occurred.

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation said Irwin was diving near Low Isles, close to the resort town of Port Douglas, when the incident happened.

A helicopter carrying paramedics flew to the island, but he died from a stingray barb to the heart, it was reported.

Irwin is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchphrase "Crikey!" in his television program, Crocodile Hunter, which was first broadcast in Australia in 1992 and has been broadcast around the world on the Discovery channel.

He rode his image into a feature film, and developed the Australia Zoo as a tourist attraction.

But Irwin's public image was tainted in 2004 when he triggered a public outcry by holding his baby in one arm while feeding large crocodiles inside a zoo pen.

Irwin claimed at the time there was no danger to his son, and authorities declined to charge Irwin with violating safety regulations.

Later that year, he was accused of getting too close to penguins, a seal and humpback whales in Antarctica while making a documentary. Irwin denied any wrongdoing, and an Australian Environment Department investigation recommended no action be taken against him.

His friend and producer John Stainton today said Irwin "died doing what he loved best".

Australia Zoo, the wildlife park Irwin ran in north-eastern Queensland state, issued a statement confirming he was killed today "by a stingray barb to his heart" while filming a sequence for a new television series on the Great Barrier Reef.

Irwin was stung at about 2am today on Batt Reef. Crew members on Irwin's boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered cardio pulmonary resuscitation techniques as they rushed the boat to Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter.

Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead a few hours later.

Local diving operator Steve Edmondson said: "Steve was hit by a stingray in the chest. He probably died from a cardiac arrest from the injury."

Fellow-Australian wildlife filmmaker David Ireland said he was shocked and saddened by Irwin's death, adding that a stingray's barb could be as deadly as a rifle bayonet. "They have one or two barbs in the tails which are not only coated in toxic material but are also like a bayonet, like a bayonet on a rifle," he said. "If it hits any vital organs it's as deadly as a bayonet."

Friend John Stainton added: "The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet.

"He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. Crocs rule!"

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, who used a photograph of his family at Australia Zoo for his official Christmas card last year, hailed Irwin for his work in promoting Australia through projects such as the "G'Day LA" tourism and trade promotion in Los Angeles in January. "The minister knew him, was fond of him and was very, very appreciative of all the work he'd done to promote Australia overseas," Mr Downer's spokesman Tony Parkinson said.

No-one at Australia Zoo was available for comment today.

Irwin is survived by his American wife Terri Irwin, from Oregon their daughter Bindi Sue, eight, and son Bob, who will turn three in December.

Along with millions of others, I and my daighter Samantha were devastated to hear the terrible news about Steve Irwin's untimely death. I remember sitting in front of our tv with Samantha from her early childhood, watching Steve inspiring us with awe and amazement. My daughter absolutely adored Steve and I had promised her that one day I would take her to the Australia Zoo, to hopefully, see Steve with his crocs. That is now a promise that I will never be able to keep. We heard of Steve's death as I drove Sam for her first day at college, to start her diploma in animal management. A course that she had been inspired to embark upon by her love of Steve. Samantha and I wish to express our sadness and deepest condolences to Terri, their children, the people of Australia and the wildlife of this planet at this awful loss. One man who packed a dozen lifetimes into such a short time with us. God bless and Rest in Peace mate. Crocs Rule!

Cant agree more. The guy was an inspiration and his enthusiasm was catching. Ive been following his career for many years and watched how him and his wife Terri and their beautiful son and daughter lived with the animals and reptiles they loved so much. For him to die by being stung is kind of apt. It would have been simply awful for him to have succumbed to illness or a car crash. I dont for 1 minute wish he was dead but boy what a way to go. My thoughts go out to Terri and his family be they human feathered or scaled. Thank God we had Steve Irwin for a little while. I hope they change Australia Zoo to the Steve Irwin Zoo.

RIP Steve.....XXXXXX

I can´t believe.
He was loved worldwide, not only for his devotion to wildlife but for his joyfull spirit. He was one of the few to turn a common wildlife program into a sensational show of surprises!

I can only say that he truly lived a lot more that I´m ever going to.

Anyone who cares for our mother nature, listens today to the final song of the wind remembering Steve Irwin,
Rest in Peace

A great man- a great loss.
He died doing what he loved and would want for the world not to grieve, but to use his memory and what he taught us to carry on. He would want us to learn about, respect, and love animals, nature, the environment etc. No one will ever be able to walk IN his footsteps so we can best honor him by following his footsteps.
He is with his mother now- and is surely at peace with her.
Our thoughts go out to the rest of his family- to Terri, and the kids, to his community, his staff from the show, his family at the zoo, and all the countless other lives he's touched!

I first remember watching Steve on dicovery animal planet in 1999. I was imediately struck by his extreme enthusiasm and passion for what he did and by his power to command such extreme danger so flexibly and in a way I have never seen done either before or since. He diced with death on a regular basis not only for the sake of human enlightenment and joy, but also for the sake of preserving what little beuty mankind may find in this world. I remember from one of his shows, shot in war torn East Timor that Steve had the extraordinary ability to empathise not just with humans, but also with every living thing around him. In a way that not many other people, even in better off more developed countries, cant. He did this by explaning to some East Timorese locals who were keeping a crocodile in appauling conditions that animals have feelings too: "This animal can feel pain like I can, but he cant cry like I can." - Where as most conservationist would have either adopted an attitude of despair or anger, Steve understood the nature of humanity as much as he understood the nature of animals and knew that these folks were just simple people who lacked education and could therefore not empathise he the way he could.
Steve knew that what he did was a continuous series of deadly risks and prepared for them fully each time. But Steve also knew that a life without risks is meaningless and that a life in one takes no risks is in fact the greatest risk of all.

I am saddened to hear of the great "Croc Hunter"'s death. He made a big impact on our family. When our oldest daughter awaited a heart transplant, she was given a wish from Make A Wish Foundation. Her wish was to meet Steve Irwin in Australia. Unfortunately, her wish couldn't be granted (Irwin didn't accept wishes from Make A Wish; also, at that time, wish kids couldn't travel internationally).

I admire Irwin's work at animal awareness. He promoted safe trapping for crocodiles, made the public aware of the need to save the endangered Australian dugong, and more.

R.I.P. Steve

Like everyone, I am devastated by this loss. However, I feel that out of his love and commitment for this world's living beings, he may have come too close, he may have lost, at some point, the respect we need to have for wildlife and for their habits and ways to deal with their environment. Animals do not share our feelings and our protocol. Aside from keeping Steve in our hearts and minds, maybe one way to honour him is to understand that other living beings do not necessarily share our ways to demonstrate love and respect. RIP, Steve!!

The world will be sadder for his loss, I know i will be,

you could see the bond between Steve and Terri and his love for his children.

i know he took his chances, i really hope he didnt suffer.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all his family,

my deepest sympathy and love from

Its a sad day in ChCh to know that the best Auzzie is gone. My heart is heavy as we remember the line. "Look out boys & girls, Danger Danger."
Such a sham to lose a great man who loved every creature no matter how mean they were. It baffles me to think how, on this occasion he could not be saved.
All I can say to his dear wife Terri and family.
Never forget how much he loved you. keep his memory alive. My deepest condolenceses.
WE WILL MISS HIM!!!

Sound like everybody agrees what a loss this is for the world - I agree wholeheartedly with all the comments above - I too felt as though I had lost a close family member.

A tragedy for the world of conservation. Also, I am sure that he would have something to say about the "dangers" of stingrays. He is only the third person to be killed off Australia by a stingray. What was he doing to get himself into such a position? A high price to pay in the love of wildlife.

My heart felt loss is with you and your family. Steve and you were the one thing that our family sat together each nite to watch. We loved his enthusiasm and his dedication. But, more than anything, I loved seeing you grow as a family and seeing Bendi become what her father and you loved and strived for and Bob that when she remembers and shares it will all be grand... Steve will be sorrily missed in our household. Blessing and love to all of you in your time of loss.

I thought of you many times today and mourned your loss with you. I will Pray for wave of loving that brings Steve's life work to the forfront to never be forgotten.

In love and caring.

I was shocked and saddened when I heard about Steve Irwin's death. I was actually affected and I told my officemates about it. My children also are sad because of the depressing news. He was such a passionate defender and protector of, not only crocodiles, but all of wildlife as well. Australia lost one of her greatest sons. His smile, his bubbly personality. He will surely be missed...

Steve Irwin will be missed by alot of people; especially children, his programs were and still will be very educational. Me and my kids loved to watch him at work. brilliant stuff.
I hope he rest well and in peace. and his wife and family carry on his good work. it was just pure unlucky that day. Rest well Steve.

Our family is deeply sadden by this. Our family spent many a night with the Irwin's. There isn't too many shows these days that bring families together. However the "Croc Hunter" and his great adventures did that.
Our prayers go out to Steve's family and friends. It was such an unfournate accident. I remind myself that it isn't how he left us but how he lived. There is no man that loved life more then he did.

My thoughts go out to his loved ones and friends during their time of grief. I hope that they can remeber all the good times they had with him while he was still in this place and I hope they can now realize he is in a place where he can be close to the animals he loved so dearly without fear of another accident as tragic as this one has been.
